Default Do I need to do a Compression / Leak Down Test?

I just recently bought a 2006 STi and took it to a friends shop to have him compression test it, he said that one of the cylinders was off by something like .001. He drove it around and lifted it up and did a visual and said it felt, sounded, and looked fine.

* Should I go and do a "Compression Test" at the dealership along with a "Leak Down Test"? I do not want this to get worse in a year or two.

Also, generally how much does each cost (at the dealership)?

What makes you feel like you need one in the first place? Do you think your head gasket, valve(s) or piston ring(s) are bad?

I bought a 2006 Certified Used STi from a Subaru dealership. It had about 14,000 miles on it, and when I brought it home. My neighbor (who has been a professional mechanic for over 30+ years) mentioned that it sounded like a cylinder was not firing or doesn't sound right based on the sound of the engine and the exhaust tone. I trust him alot, has been a family friend for like forever, so his opinion is important to me.

So I had my bro take it to a friends shop to do a compression test and so forth. He said it looks good, sounds fine and drives fine. He specializes in Nissans/Hondas mainly. I am just worried that if I wait and later on someone says, "if only you caught this sooner"... know what I mean?

Your neighbor has probably not been a SUBARU mechanic for 30+ years. Nothing sounds like a Subaru with its unequal length manifolds, and its not very uncommon for a "very experienced" mechanic to say it sounds like its misfiring.

the factory spec for what constitutes a "bad" motor is more than 7PSI difference from the highest cyl to the lowest cyl. So .001 is fine, although I have never in my life seen a tester that goes that far down.

As far as looking and sounding good, I ran mid 12s on a blown motor in my WRX, and caught/passed a Cayman S at a local road course with 2 blown cyls in my 07 FXT.

So looking and sounding good doesnt mean it IS good.
