*Update*

After my wife's last oil change, the service manager told her they were gong to do a consumption test. They wanted her to drive 1200 miles, and then come back. If the light came on in the interim, she was to return right away. Well, 700 miles in to the 1200 ... it came on. She took it in, and they immediately gave her a loaner. According to the dealer, hers is the 4th Impreza this year with the same issue. However, they said that hers was the worst they'd seen (and using 3 times the amount of oil that it should).

Now, I'm getting this all third person. But, I'm confident that the details are correct. They told her that they would either rebuild her engine ... or drop a brand new engine in the car. Maybe I can finagle a direct trade for a WRX. I mean, it's for her pain and suffering you know...

Upward and onward...

Charlie, how is your consumption going? I haven't been following this thread.

I've been following this thread for a long time, from before the launch of the current gen Impreza. At that time, I was looking for a fuel-efficient and reliable AWD vehicle. I wanted it AWD so I can satisfy CalTrans requirements for driving without using chains up to the ski resorts in the Tahoe area.
I was seriously considering the Impreza and the Forester at that time. I would probably have purchased a 2011 Forester, if not for its antiquated 4AT and unexciting fuel-economy. I was ready to get the Impreza, but the winter of 11-12 was pretty mild or even dry at the beginning of the season, so I decided to wait. Then, I read about slew of first-year defects and also saw this thread. The oil issue did not seem to go away.
As it is, the Impreza was a bit small and a bit slow for my taste and I was concerned with the lackluster real-world fuel economy people were getting and with the driving experience with the CVT. Oil consumption was the last boulder to break the camel's back.
I looked elsewhere and ended up getting a Mazda CX-5 2.5L AWD. Now, I'd prefer a wagon style vehicle, but the CX-5 drives pretty good compared to the competition. I am very happy with it. The only minor issue I have with it is trembling of the hood over imperfect highway. BTW, it too uses 0-20w synthetic oil and it does not consume any. Even my previous Honda Accord used 5-20w and did not consume a drop until I sold it.
I am also happy with the real world fuel economy I am getting (just shy of 28 MPG in highway + stop and go traffic).

My question to you: from very superficial view of the thread, it seems there are only very few new owners with fuel consumption problem. Do you think that Subaru has really addressed the issue with the rings TSB, or do you think all new Imprezas are all subject to potentially getting this issue as the same probability as before?

Most burn a little and a few burn a lot. It probably has more to do with the boxer design than 0w20.

It looks like some shortblock replacements didn't solve the problem, so I believe that rings may not always be at fault.

^^ What makes you think oil consumption has to do with the boxer design? If that was the case, then ALL of our Imprezas, and all Subaru cars since they've been in business, and all flat-6 Porsches, and all old VW Beatles would be oil consumers. But they're not.

Mine uses hardly any oil at all (maybe 0.3 quarts in 6k miles).

My question to ALafya: You're happy with your CX-5. Good choice; I like the current generation of Mazdas. But why are you still monitoring this Subaru forum? You've already selected a different brand and car.

Just curious.

On my 2014 XV Crosstrek, 5spd, the low oil level light came on at 1800mi and it took a 1 quart top-up. I topped up with a qt of Napa synthetic 5w30 I had on hand, and did it's first oil change at ~3500mi. I used Napa 0w20 because it was on sale for $3.79/qt and a blue Subaru filter. I haven't noticed any major consumption since and I drive the poop out of her and have since I got it with ~12mi on the ticker.

First, I really want to know if oil-consumption is here to stay or if it was addressed. Second, I obsessively watched this thread (and others) almost everyday for many months, it became like a habbit. Nowdays, I look it up maybe once every 2 weeks, mostly to see if the issue is resolved or still on-going.
Subaru really disappointed me in the way this was handled. Now, with FB engines in the Forester, Outback and Legacy as well, they are all 'marked' for as long as this is still on-going.

Well, I've been happy with my Impreza, and would buy another Subaru in a heartbeat. I keep hoping the new WRX will be released as a hatchback eventually. If not, I might be looking at the next generation of Mazda 3speed, whenever it is released.

I'd like my next car to be a bit more bada$$ from the factory.

Some articles say they aren't going to make it in a hatch......but who knows, that could change or it could just be bull S. Even with consumption problems(which was fixed) I would still get a Subaru. I wonder what the next gen impreza will bring. I read it will be produced in Indiana...what do you american folks have to say about that? Will this be better quality or worse?

I've also heard mixed things about the WRX/STI being offered as a hatchback in the future. The Americas are Subaru's biggest market, and Subaru knows that 50% of WRX/STI sales were hatchbacks, so I can't believe that they would ignore that demand for long.

Hopefully for their own sake, they get the next gen cars to not chug oil.
I wouldn't hold my breath.

If they make a WRX hatch, then I would expect them to provide an STI hatch too. It wouldn't make sense to do one and not the other.

What they should do is continue to offer the impreza in both hatch and sedan, wrx in hatch only and sti in sedan only.

It's a little off topic, but still impreza related. Would it help you if I said I hope the next gen imprezas aren't oil burners. Or I hope the US has better build quality

no I was only pointing out directly, not passively, the hypocritical people who are so quick to point out the very first word I type that isn't directly on topic.
They also cry like baies to the mod.

Gotcha. Anyway, I really hope they fix the oil consumption problem. I love my hatchbacks so it would be great for some non oil burners, in future wrxs and imprezas. Not sure if the 15 wrxs are oil burners, but that's for another thread
