i ended up using red model paint on the radio. looks really good, and i will be switching the gauges to red paint also. havent mustered up the gall to wire LED's in the HVAC yet. but for your car, you can probably paint them too. |

The HVAC controls on the '08-? Impreza, I just disassembled, and it turns out they are illuminated by two tiny white light bulbs - which is to say, not LEDs, so they have a slight yellowish tint. The light from these two bulbs is spread out via a translucent piece of specifically curved red plastic, and then the backs of the HVAC dials are also painted red.
So, if I want to make these any color other than red (and I do), I'd have to remove that red paint first. This can be done with a Q-tip and nail polish remover, correct? Then I'd have to discard that red plastic piece, which will unfortunately cause the light to be spread non-uniformly, and that's sort of a bummer, but not necessarily a deal-breaker. I mean, what else am I going to do? It isn't like I can just make another one of those made out of clear plastic. And, lastly (almost), I'd have to replace those two white bulbs with LEDs. That's probably the only easy part of the entire process, and even it won't be that easy, as I didn't see how to even remove those. They should screw out easily enough, if I could expose the back of them. How does one remove a HVAC control panel from a car, any car, with those metal cables attached to it? It seems pretty tightly tethered in place. Finally, though it's really not important, I'd also love to replace (or have replaced for me, rather) the red LED for the AC on/off button, and that's soldered to that circuit board. That light totally should've been blue, and I truly have no idea why it's not. Sigh. It looks like getting rid of all this red lighting (which I really want to do!) might not be possible. Or, at least, it sure as hell won't be cheap. Last edited by je255j; 05-28-2009 at 02:36 AM. |

It seems that Parts Express no longer stocks the red bulb covers, but I found another resource, Electronics Plus.
However, they list the covers as .125" inside diameter (1/8") x .187" outside diameter (3/16") Are these the same as the covers that you've used? They also list ones with a .125" outside diameter. Just want to make sure to order the correct size so any help will be appreciated! Last edited by tahoebru; 08-19-2010 at 11:56 AM. Reason: notifications |

So in order to do just my HVAC, my OEM Boost Gauge, and My Key ring, i would need about 8 .2 covers?
What about the window switches?? |

Autolumination.com sells led bulbs that have up to 5 LEDs a bulb on them if you go to the site then scroll down look for the #74 bulbs click there those should fit they are wedge style bulbs.
I know this cus I changed my gauge cluster with them :-) (in my 05 Wrx) Last edited by quicksubie; 12-10-2010 at 11:53 PM. |

^^^ sorry
Take hvac controls out, locate bulbs, fig out how many it takes I'm going to guess two or three. Go to autolumination.com scroll down look for #74 click then buy the color and how many LEDs per bulb you want. Wait for shipping then install, sit back and enjoy your new colored hvac controls |

i just re-did my gauge cluster the other day and took all the red condoms out. they didnt look very good, anyways. i cleaned up all the green and black filament coating with nail polish remover and sandpaper, then used a salmon red stage gel. you can find them at any stage lighting/equipment place. it looks infinitely better than before, and the color is clean.

Great info! I wasn't sure how to get those bulbs out and I really didnt want to break them. Question tho, the light in the ring around the 12v plug is a smaller led compared to the regular bulbs. Obviously you can buy the regular bulb covers anywhere, but where can I pick up those smaller bulb covers that fit that light??
