High performance driving school.
The Inland Empire BMW club hosted a high performance driving school at Spokane raceway park on 11/4-5/00. The track was the 2.5 mile road course. I'm happy to report that we had three Impreza 2.5RS coupes there. I am in the process of putting pictures on a link for everyone to enjoy. We all had a great time and were very impressed with our vehicles. Ours ran the stock tires (snow tires going on this week and new wheels and tires next spring) and they did very well on the track both wet and dry. I was a bit worried because of the comments about the stock tires. Neither myself or my wife had any problems with them (and they were pushed hard - too hard in one turn by yours truly). That was, however, driver error, not the vehicle or tires. There will be several schools next year and I hope we can get more RS coupes to participate. Here is a link to the Inland Empire BMW home page if you wish to learn more about the schools. They also will be updating the school schedule within the next couple of months.
http://members.aa.net/~lardieri/bmw/Home.htm I'll try to get the link to the pictures up and running within the next few days. bye for now........ bogusbob PS: If anyone knows a quick and easy way to post the pictures, please let me know. They are an attachment to an email at this time. [This message has been edited by bogusbob (edited November 13, 2000).]

Hi everyone,
I am in the process of setting up our homepage (new experience for me). When that is completed I will have the pictures from the driving school posted there. After rereading my first post it appears I limited participation in future schools to those with coupes. To the sedan owners, I apologize. I would hope all Subie owners will come over next year and enjoy our eastside hospitality. The three of us who participated earlier this month were Tasche from Boise, ID - MY00 Silverthorn 2.5RS coupe, Dan from Bellingham, WA - MY00 BRP 2.5RS coupe and my wife and I from Newport, WA - MY01 SRP 2.5RS coupe. Hopefully Dan and Tasche will posts their thoughts about the driving school too. A special thanks to Dan's father (he also participated in the school in his MY01 BMW 330xi) who took the pictures. bye for now ....... bogusbob (Ken) |

Hey Bogus,
Just a few question, seems interesting enough. How much did it all cost along with membership fee for the club and for the school entry fees. Was it a full two day school. Do you actually drive 'around' the whole track and learn how to 'race' the track. Or was it more like how do an emergency lane change at 35 MPH , breaking hard in a strait line and in a turn, ect.. you know basic driver safety & avoidance stuff. Basically is the performance school geared more towards an advance car control type drivers ed. or more towards competitive racing car control ed. --Reiflex ImprezaRacing [This message has been edited by Reiflex (edited November 15, 2000).] |

Hi Reflex,
The school was a full two day school with four runs of about 20 minutes each on Saturday and Sunday. The students are divided into four groups, advanced, high intermediate, low intermediate, and novice. Each student has an assigned instructor. The instructors come from all over the Pacific Northwest. The cost of this school was $225 for BMW-CCA members. If the student was not a member of the BMW-CCA an additional $35 was charged and they were enrolled in BMW-CCA. The school focuses on learning to drive a smooth racing line around the entire track. The emphasis is on smoothness and learning the limits of your car and yourself. I would say this is advanced car control with the opportunity to test your limits in your vehicle. The school cost also included lunch on Saturday and Sunday with a very nice dinner on Saturday night. Hope this answers your questions. I would love to see several more "westsiders" show up for one or more of the schools next year. The club is looking at having four schools next year with the possibility of holding one at Seattle International raceway and another at Portland International raceway. The other two would be held in Spokane. There will be more on the schools in later updates on the clubs' webpage. bye for now ........ bogusbob (Ken) |

hey-
i was the one with the blue Impreza at the school. it was one of the most fun weekends i've ever had. the information about the school emphasized that it was not a racing school and implied that it focused more on lower speed car control. it was totally a high-speed drivin school and once you got the track line down, the instructor tried to get you to drive faster and faster. this was my first time driving on a track and it was great having someone in the car yelling at you to drive faster instead of to slow down. the impreza was a great car to have there especially on the first day in the pouring rain. When my instructor (who drives a 300hp porsche 944) was driving my car for a few laps in the rain he said "wow, i really like this car, I can't believe how much grip it has." I can't wait to go to another one. Dan |

Hi CHAi,
Spokane raceway park is located a few miles west of Spokane just north of the town of Airway Heights. I will post more information or links about next years schools when it is available withing the next few weeks. Thanks for the comments Dan. I am glad you enjoyed the experience. I have been helping my wife with registration for the past couple of years, but this was my first experience on the track as a student. I had a super time too. I still hope to post a link to the pictures of the three Imprezas soon. bye for now.... bogusbob (Ken) |
