To remove the resonator, or not to remove, that is the question
Planning on doing a downpipe soon (I already have an axle-back), and I'm wondering the gain/downside to keeping/removing the resonator? I'm assuming removing will make the system louder, but how much? Also, am I gaining any real power by removing it?
Just curious what the common practice is out there. Thanks in advance for the input.

i am running the invidia catted dp with the SPT exhaust which is made by Borsal. It has no resonator but a good muffler. it dosen't drone in the car and has a nice mellow grumble. i also had it setup wit a non-catted invidia dp an it was louder but not obnoxious. Now a buddy of mine has the Invidia non catted dp with the invidia N1 racing exhaust non resonated and it is loud. I would suggest either a catted dp such as the Ividia great dp, the Cobb or Perins new catted dp that also looks awsome. then get the SPT/Borsal exhaust. If you want to go un catted which will only pick you up 2-3hp or so then I would go with the Invidia N1 street-resonated or the invidia G200 resonated exhaust. But what you pick up going catless you loose throught the resonator. Catted better for the enviornment not that i am a tree hugger but noncatted exhausts tend to stink like raw fuel which i cant stand. just my .02

Ok. From what you said, it sounds like if I go w/ a catted Cobb downpipe (or any catted downpipe for that matter) I might as well remove the resonator b/c the cat will keep annoying noise levels under control.
Where can I buy a section of pipe to replace the one w/ the resonator in it? If you just buy Cobb's dp, it doesn't come w/ a section to eliminate the resonator (unless you get the whole cat-back system including muffler). Should I just go to some exhaust shop and have them make one for me? |

You will probably have to have it made. I would go with the Invidia or Perrin catted down pipes better build quality and fitment and placement of the cat on the Cobb is at the end of the dp so it takes longer to get to the right operating temps. What axle back do you have? You maybe able to get one from that company or if you have to have it made make sure the use mandrel bent stainless steel and you get the flanges that match up or if your existng mid pipe is ss and 3" cut the flanges off reweld them on the new midsection and get new gaskets.

My axle-back is sti, which came w/ the car when I got it. It's the big 'ol round looking one. It's nice though - SS and high quality welds. From my understanding it was also pretty expensive. If I do the Cobb, it replaces the stock downpipe and midpipe (using just one cat instead of the stock setup w/ two). Then I basically need a simple 3" rear exhaust pipe to connect from the Cobb dp (which I believe is also 3") to my existing axle-back (which is also 3"?). I know the axle-back that I have now mates up perfectly to the resonator pipe. Is that 2.5 or 3 inches?

Cobb tapers to 2.5" at the midpipe just like stock

I still have my resonator in the WRX, but I had one removed in my previous GTI. It sounded great, but resonated on the highway. It was very annoying and hardly worth it. If there isn't a performance gain, I would be leary about removing it permanently.
I love the sound of nice exhaust but can't stand droning while taking a longer trip. |
