Hey after reading through this thread, I wonder if I haven't felt the abs/vdc stop me from sliding because I have the hill assist turned off, possibly a side effect of that is disabled gyro? Does that even make sense? I have jammed around some on dirt roads and did some high speed drifting turns with no problem, but i wasn't super sideways either. But other times it gets loose when I want it to, come to think of it. I've spun her around pretty good with and without the e-brake on loose dirt.
Either way I don't have an issue with how it works yet. I'll find out in the snow this winter. Couple more months... |

Checked the factory service manual and it states that the VDC Control Module and Hydraulic Control Module (ABS) are the same unit. In fact, this is the official name of the ABS module "VDC Control Module and Hydraulic Control Unit (VDCCM&H/U)".
It sounds like everyone was pretty much at that realization already, but this confirms the relationship. Wonder if the VDCCM part can be disabled separately. |

Found a bit more.... Regarding the Yaw & G Sensors, the FSM says, "Yaw rate & longitudinal G and lateral G sensor are integrated with the VDC control module&hydraulic control module (VDCCM&H/U)." So you won't find them in the console or dash. They are within the VDCCM itself which is the box hanging off the back of the Hydraulic Control Unit.

1. The CVT does not allow you to disable stability control, and therefore will not allow you to slide sideways on demand. 2. The 5spd is not subordinate to such forces. |

I hope that's right about the 5sp (because that's what I have ) but that was not the case with my 2011 Outback 6MT. VDC kicked in very effectively when ever I tried to have some sideways fun in the snow. I don't have a comparison to the CVT, though, so maybe the MT with viscous center diff does allow more freedom.

You could also disable it by cutting you brake lines. I would say it doesn't count as being disabled if the whole car is disabled.

eta: I'm off the opinion that while it would be more fun to have it all turned off I'm guessing it's not a huge deal for most. I'm just trying to understand the truth of the matter here as to what the differences are in the diff AWD systems and what everyone can and can't disable. I know they are mechanically different but I'm more referring to the "real world" differences in terms of user experience. Last edited by M45; 10-19-2012 at 01:16 PM. |

The few times i have tried to do donuts on gravel or whatever they are called in your post of the world, i have been able too. It is my understanding than vdc shouldn't allow this to happen. |

so you are saying you were able to do some "fun stuff" - have you turned anything off to do this? just the traction control button? something else? I'm curious what I should expect once I find myself on snowy surfaces this winter. |

I can speak for my experience with my 5mt and the cvt loaners I've had.
The manual is WAY more fun on dirt/clay/sandy roads. Gravel is where the abs, vdc, etc really ruin the fun. But I need RA flaps before I take any gravel or ROUGH roads too hard. Sure is fun on graded dirt roads out in the ocala national forest. Did some "rally cross" of my own last weekend. Just spent two hours washing, although love bugs and blind mosquitos are mostly to blame. When someone figures out a good way of eliminating all the "anti-fun" elements of the car, I'm sure there will be more go-fast goodies to help increase the fun-factor as well. |

You'll be fine M45.
I flogged a cvt loaner fairly hard on some dirt roads, and traction is good, but the rear doesn't feel as *predictable* on the cvt when going 70mph on dirt. For all intents and purposes, it does just fine. But yeah MT forever!!! |
