that is 100% incorrect - the billet wheels are typically slightly heavier by a couple grams. I have not seen any single comparison where the billet compressor wheel was less weight. believe it or not many of BW's cast wheels like the S200SX 7670 and S300SX 9180 (66) are just as good as the EFR series' FMW counterparts, they just have a slightly different trim on the compressor side

the FMW billet compressor wheels

the S300SX3 66 is an excellent turbo - and shares the same turbine blade aero as the EFR. the compressor wheel is also badass, in fact its almost as good as the efr, but way less cost and much better availability. That particular turbo is ONLY available with the cupped tip (the flat tip does not work well on that blade shape and size, so was never put on the market)

your turbo is almost identical to this FMW turbo, its really a great unit!!

Geoff,

I am not too familiar with the BW cast comp. wheels and FMW counterparts but I DO know for a fact that the weight savings on for example:

- Billet 16G
- Billet 18G
- Billet 20G
- Billet 30R
- Billet 35R

Are almost 30% savings compared to that of their cast comp. wheel counterparts. I can post the weight comparisons if you are interested. Perhaps BW takes a different approach then aftermarket manufacturers like Precision or Blouch for their Billet wheels.

Jasper.

OOPS sorry about that, here it is again:

using the old S300SX 8375 (not FMW) this is the low boost run at 1.55 bar boost, red = flat tip, blue = cupped tip. obviously the red tip is the winner at this flow rate. I suspect philthy would see the same on his subaru if he tried to test. however, his evo at 40psi boost might be a little different..

please post the weight comparisons, I have never seen anything like this re weight differences. Yes - BW definitely takes a different approach than the aftermarket guys - mainly becuase they *forge* the wheel first, and then machine it... its a forging not just a chunk of billet so it is MUCH stronger with better grain boundaries, but slightly heavier due to the higher density forged alu

fwiw i met the head of MHI's turbo division recently - he commented that the 16G was one of their highest performing compressor wheels, and was actually designed & shaped by hand originally - not done with CFD software. that blew my mind

That was indeed my interest as what approach they have choosen to go with: use the extra material strength to make a lighter but -as strong- wheel as the cast one, OR use the stronger material to just make a much stronger wheel with equal weight.

Question then is why this approach was chosen? BW (as Garrett if I'am not mistaken) obviously felt the wheel could use the extra strength, which is a little strange from my point of view as I have never seen or heard of a compressor wheel breaking other then from injesting foreign objects?

You've spoken a lot with BW's technicians Geoff, any idea why they did not use the forged billet material for making it lighter so even faster spool could be had?
Or is it that the better aero from the billet wheel is more 'aggressive' towards the forces it puts on the wheel, hence the need to make it stronger at the same time?

Thanks in advance,
Walter

Long term update - it still puts a silly grin on my face every time I drive it

I have only one issue, my wife is on my ass to scale back on the number of cars I own (currently 6) and I may need to part with it

To be 100% honest, I've tried so many different setups and turbo's on this car and have driven friends cars with all the other variants - there is no question that this is the perfect setup that's 100% daily driver friendly/fun and has the grunt to get up and go when needed... For the money, the SX300 FMW is in a class of its own! I honestly disliked this car with the 40R - Geoff can confirm such, we are very good friends and the first (and only) argument we EVER had was over that turbo lol... I fell in love with my STI with just switching turbos, I still can't believe it...

Out of all the turbos that you've tried what would you say is the most cost/power efficient?

660 Corrected for altitude, I made 560 at the wheels uncorrected at 5400' elevation.

We've actually had a lot of customers using the S300SX FMW on diesel applications with great results. Most of them were cummins 6 cyls, but I will ask one of our distributors about the duramax they were working on
