Default SE/NC insured motorist rates, progressive insurance doubled???!!!!?!?!

I know this is not a topic often discussed but I feel a need to vent here.

I am 25 years old and have been with progressive since I was 17. The insurance company I was with when I was 16 was a little high, then I got a ticket which would have made it worse so I went shopping and was happy with the rate progressive offered me that was lower with the ticket than my current insurance was without. Anyway, I have never had to file a claim so I've been happy with my insurance up until now. As my current poilcy states, there are NO TICKETS, and only one accident which was a no fault. I have my fiancé on my policy as well as both of our cars (04 forester xt : liability, 04 Sti : full coverage with $500 other and $1000 accident deductible). I have been paying $112 a month for this policy for a couple of years now. My insurance renews every 6 months and just renewed on Jan 1st, and my insurance rate has DOUBLED to $220/mo. I called progressive and was calm at first thinking this was a mistake, had to be right? Nothing has changed on my policy, no tickets or accidents added, haven't moved, etc... They tell me they reevaluated the area and due to factors like accidents, theft, and weather, the insurance rates for the area have "increased". I proceeded to tell them I consider $20/mo an increase, doubling my monthly cost is complete bull****. Their response "sorry sir, there is nothing we can do". Obviously I promised them I would no longer be with their company (as I'm sure if this is a trend with their company I won't be alone), and got an "oh well"ish attitude back.

Does anyone else have progressive? They said this went into effect in September but since I was in the middle of a policy period it didnt hit until I renewed. Anyone else have a massive increase for no reason? I've called everyone I know asking if their insurance has gone way up and they all said no (none of them are with progressive). My concern with this is that even if progressive is the only company to do this so far, obviously its not regulated/illegal so what's to keep the rest of the companies from creating a rate hike trend? I've been reading reviews (more so complaints) about progressive being a really bad company to deal with when you have a claim, basically they aren't going to pay you and are rude, or they give you subpar repairs and expect you to be greatful.

Have you compared rates with other companies?

Not yet, found out after hours from my bank account being negative while I was at a drive thru (awesome!). I will probably go to Allstate, State Farm or nationwide.

Do you have access to USAA? That's where I'd go.

If one of your parents wasn't in the military at some point, it's a no-go for you (last time I checked). USAA provides financial services (including insurance) to military individuals and their dependents. You can be grandfathered in if your mom or dad purchases a USAA service, which then makes you eligible.

I've been with Travelers for approaching 4 years, and my rates keep increasing every 6 months... I'm about to start shopping around, myself.

Wow...def calling arounf tomorrow...just looked and on my renewal my AF1 accident (7 insurance points) and 2 9mph overs went off...yet my liability is 100 dollars more than last policy. I think 600/6 months on a clean policy for just liability is dumb. I mean I understood 490 for 2 tickets and the wreck but geez.....

Upstate sc here with esurance have been happy so far, good price and reasonable explanations. Have not had a ticket or accident and no claims yet. Mine actually went down when I renewed a couple months ago.

I just don't get how they are allowed to literally double my insurance without hesitation or any change to my policy/driving record. Something is not right, and they seem sure that its no mistake and its because of my location (which also hasn't changed). I don't live in a big city so I don't see any liability there. I don't know how they determine pricing for location either, city, county, regional, state, etc.? I'd like to be able to find someone else within 10 miles of me with progressive to see if their insurance has gone up for "no" reason.

Have you all been hit with flooding or tornados on your area recently? The reason I ask is in areas like Tuscaloosa where they got hit with the big tornado and ny where they got flooded insurance companies jacked up the rates on these people in these areas. State Farm got sued over it in Alabama in a class action law suit and had to pay out the wazoo.

I'm with State Farm, and I pay $87/mo for full coverage on my LGT and liability on my '92 Accord(just paid yesterday so it's definitely up-to-date). I had a couple of tickets when I was like 18-20, but have been clean. I'm also 25yrs old too and have been with them since I was 17.

Not sure how they rate the area, but being in Raleigh and working in Clayton(every other day I go to class too, so even more travel through I40 and I440), I'd imagine I'm at a higher risk than you.

My neighbor down the street has Progressive IIRC, I can ask them how much they're paying...but I know my other neighbor's son had switched due to them jacking his rates up(I think he's with Geico or Nationwide now).

No natural disasters here that I'm aware of. Not a hot spot for theft.... No noticeable increase in accidents in my area. I've seen nothing justifying a $110/mo increase in my insurance.

Just got off the phone with them. They said the change was state wide and something about payouts vs premiums and having to balance it....? Anyway I talked to a nobody at first and immediately asked for a manager or underwriter, and of course he asked my information and problem and tried to fix it. 15 minutes later he's telling me I'd have to talk to an underwriter (no ****), but they won't be in for another 30 minutes. He asked me to call back to speak with them but I asked him a question before I got off the phone that for some reason prompted him to transfer me to a manager (again, could have skipped the bull****). After 30 minutes of being on the phone and comparing online quotes with different information to an actual person, we finally got somewhere! I was in a no fault accident almost a year ago and was told by the other parties insurance that no fault was able to be determined on either side so we would each pay our own damages. Somehow the woman ended up getting $1600 from my insurance and I didn't get a dime? Anyway the manager not only got my rate back to where it has been, its now lower! I've had to coax people into cutting the bull**** before, but she genuinely did not just "flip a switch" and give me a deal since I made a scene. She said she doesn't know why the quote she was showing was lower than my old price but all of my coverage was the same and everything went through. So luckily for me and them we got it straightened out, although its still somewhat vague as to what went awry in the first place.

I'd be weary and start looking for other providers(maybe they'll match or beat what you're paying even now?). I don't know if they basically lied to you or whatever but the fact that they tried to jack your rate up due to no fault of your own and make you dig to get it back down is pretty disconcerting.

I've thought about that. I'm still not sure what happened and hopefully it was an honest mistake. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt on this, but if anything else happens I'm switching to another company and not looking back.
