GM's small Cadillac will take aim at BMW 3 series
BMW sold 73,395 3-series models during the first nine months of the year, a 9 percent increase over the same period in 2009. The new Cadillac model that General Motors announced today will be aimed at the smaller models produced by BMW, Mercedes-Benz and other luxury brands. The rear-drive Cadillac is expected to be called the ATS and to arrive in showrooms in 2012 or early 2013, according to industry sources. “We will have a car positioned below the CTS in our lineup to compete with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C class.,” said Nick Twork, a Cadillac spokesman, during a telephone interview. Those were the only details GM would divulge today, Twork said. He would not identify the name for the car or give the time frame for production. The automaker plans to spend $190 million to modify the Lansing Grand River assembly plant in Lansing, Mich., to build the ATS. A second shift and 600 jobs will be added. The timing for the second shift and the additional employees was not announced. “America's fastest-growing luxury brand this year is about to get even more competitive with the addition of an all-new small luxury car,” GM CEO Dan Akerson said in a news release. “This investment demonstrates GM's commitment to Cadillac and to a strong U.S. manufacturing base.” Union help Joe Ashton, UAW vice president of the union's GM department, said “the UAW recognizes the paramount importance of innovation, flexibility and partnership with management to respond to global economic pressures. “We are proud to play our part in the turnaround at GM. Our mission is to make the highest quality products for the best value,” Ashton said in the news release. The plant currently assembles the Cadillac CTS and STS. Since emerging from bankruptcy in July 2009, GM has announced investments totaling more than $3.1 billion in 21 U.S. plants. “The 3 series is BMW's biggest seller,” said Jim Hall, director of industry analysis at 2953 Analytics. Cadillac has “to go with the core of the market.” Last year, BMW sold 90,960 3-series models in the United States, a 19 percent drop from the previous year. But for the nine-month period this year, BMW sold 73,395 3-series models, a 9 percent increase over the same period in 2009. Full-line luxury brand The ATS and the upcoming XTS sedan are part of Cadillac's plan to position the brand as a full-line luxury brand. The XTS will share a front-drive platform with the Buick LaCrosse and other GM models. It will debut in 2011. A larger, rear-drive Cadillac that would rival the Mercedes-Benz S class and BMW 7 series in pricing is planned later in the decade. Cadillac sold 105,013 vehicles during the January through September period, a 44 percent increase over the same period in 2009. The automaker sold 109,092vehicles in 2009, a 32 percent decrease over the previous year. The ATS will be developed on GM's new rear-drive Alpha vehicle platform. The platform will be used for a range of ATS models -- a sedan, coupe, convertible and possibly a wagon, Hall said. GM also expects this smaller Cadillac to be more acceptable as an export model, he said. Stretching the Alpha The Alpha platform also will be stretched to develop the next-generation CTS. That car is expected to debut in 2013 or 2014. The platform will not be unique to Cadillac. The next-generation Chevrolet Camaro will share the platform in 2014 as well as a possible sporty, high-performance Chevrolet sedan that is under consideration. Prior to GM's bankruptcy and the elimination of brands, a Pontiac model also had been slated to share the platform. PRESS RELEASE: GM to Invest $190 Million, Add 600 Jobs at Lansing Grand River LANSING, Mich. – General Motors today announced a $190 million investment in its Lansing Grand River assembly plant for the production of a new Cadillac model. The investment will create 600 jobs and result in the addition of a second shift. “America’s fastest-growing luxury brand this year is about to get even more competitive with the addition of an all-new small luxury car,” said GM Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson. “This investment demonstrates GM’s commitment to Cadillac and to a strong U.S. manufacturing base.” The announcement brings the total of new U.S. investment to more than $3.1 billion and more than 7,900 jobs that GM has created or retained in 21 U.S. plants since emerging from bankruptcy in July 2009. Built in 2001, Lansing Grand River is GM’s second-newest U.S. assembly plant and the manufacturing home of the Cadillac CTS and STS as well as their V-series performance versions. Earlier this year Lansing Grand River received the J.D. Power and Associates Bronze Plant Award for initial quality. Joe Ashton, UAW vice president of the GM Department, said, “Today’s announcement is further proof of what UAW President Bob King said earlier this summer, ‘The UAW recognizes the paramount importance of innovation, flexibility and partnership with management to respond to global economic pressures. We are proud to play our part in the turnaround at GM. Our mission is to make the highest quality products for the best value.’ “The members of UAW Local 652 have consistently demonstrated that they can compete with any labor force on the globe,” Ashton added. “The commitment, dedication, and hard work of GM’s UAW members provide the foundation for the positive news coming from the company.” This year, the Lansing Grand River team launched the CTS Coupe, lauded by the automotive press for groundbreaking design and outstanding performance. The Coupe extends the CTS line, which has been named to Car and Driver’s 10 Best list for three straight years. It shares design cues with the CTS Sport Sedan, but the Coupe has a wider track, lower roofline and shorter length, giving it an aggressive stance and sleek, athletic profile The timing of the new Cadillac and the new jobs as well as the start of the second shift will be announced later. why has it taken them this long to get into this market? I hope it turns out to be a baby c. Guess we'll find out in 3 years.
I would like to see what Lincoln could do in a similar market. Something similar to the Fusion GT concept and make it a 335/S4 competitor. |

The CTS is closer to 5 series size than 3.
They will likely grow the CTS a bit. The STS will likely be replaced by a larger rwd flagship. The question is how that fits with the new DTS replacement. |

thats seems to be the recommendation that every NASIOC'er is coming up with for every manufacture and every platform... Everyone just copies the STI specs and say sell it for 30k....

I love the performance for the price of the CTS-V I just can't get used to the looks. Especially the coupe, it just looks so chunky and massive. Perhaps on a smaller 3 series size vehicle they can make it better looking. They don't need the LSA a LS3 if it's under 3,700lbs would be plenty.

This is a car Caddy NEEDS to make. The 3 series market is a very profitable one. It is BMW's bread and butter car. They need to do a BETTER job with the ATS than the CTS. They should not make it all about raw straight line performance. Make it a total package. It has be firing on feel, looks, handling, etc. It cannot just be fast. The 'vee' line does fast plenty well. The 3 series is a legend not because of massive HP. It is a total driving feel.

You also forgot to mention every car must have awd. I personally like what the caddys have been over the last couple of years. I'm very interested what they can do with this! I believe they realize it's not just the 3 series they need to worry about, but the econo hyundai that has bitten into this market and they need to be more competitive with pricing and options. |

Sounds pretty good from what information we have so far. It would be nice to see a true 3-series fighter come from Cadillac, not that I would probably be able to afford it currently, in the trim level I would probably want. Maybe they will put this engine into something stripped-down and budget-performance oriented? Of course, then I would not buy it because it was a Chevy ..........

The Regal GS got watered down by GM for many reasons...losing the Saab sourced turbo V6 wasn't a big deal...but losing the AWD system was the end for me. I still wouldn't mind owning one but the excitement died out fast after the loss of AWD.
I can't wait to see the ATS revealed. The only issue I am currently wrestling with is that GM is putting a 2.5L NA 4 cylinder in the base vehicles. All the talk of the 2.0L turbo 4 and an optional 3.6L V6 made people think the turbo 4 was the base engine. Now GM is talking about a 190hp 4 cylinder being the base engine which is just seriously diluting the whole idea of car in my mind...GM had many complaints about the base SRX being under powered, they just recently fixed that complaint and are now about to make the same mistake with the ATS... A de-tuned version of the turbo 4 making something around 220hp would be great. If GM could build a NA 4 making 210-215hp I would settle for that as well...but a big 2.5L NA four will probably be thrown in just for making a little torque down low to give the car the feel of having a larger engine off the line...I'm sure it will leave most people wanting more and I doubt this engine will have the premium quality that will be expected in this segment. GMs turbo 4s and global V6 engines have come a long way in a short time...and Cadillac has changed its image in a short time...why not keep that trend going and don't look back. I am sure the 2.5L motor will be cheap but at what cost? |
