what's the best way to train a dog to live in the backyard?
We have a 2 month old golden retriever and there's no way we'll be able to keep it indoors when its full grown.
How do i go about training it so that it'll be comfortable living outside? When would be the right time to let it sleep outside?

wouldn't it be traumatizing for the pup or would it be okay at this early age?

Leave it outside during a hurricane... it'll only see better days afterwards.

Are you completely retarded or just semi-retarded? |

Beat the **** out of it.
Or, leave dog outside for longer periods of time. Start now. Place food and water outside instead of inside. |

Give it to some people who love it? Adopt appropriately-sized dogs in the future? BTW - dogs like small dens. He'll be happy with 15 sq. ft. How small is your house?

you're a retard.
get a pet door so he can go in and out when he wants (if you leave him out all day, we keep our 1 yr old Aus Shep/Lab mix crated all day, and she's happy as a clam). Don't be gay, exercise your dog when you get home. Hell, after work I hit the gym for 20-30 minutes on the treadmill, 30 minutes weights, then come home, walk the dog for AT LEAST 30 minutes, then cook dinner... Surely you can work in a little dogersize in your schedule (and maybe use it to make you walk more, if you need to lose weight). |

Doomed.
Your dog needs to feel like he's a part of the pack. The pack lives indoors. Banish him to the back yard and prepare for behavioral problems. Not that he needs to be indoors always, but if you deny him access he will act out. Find a trainer who will work with you and your dog. My 135 lb Weimaraner was not a problem inside. |

Why the **** do people get dogs in these situations????????? ****ing hate people who leave their dogs outside year round. They get ignored, and then they bark and piss off everyone else.

teach it to sleep in a crate. then, once it makes the crate its own, build a dog house outside. put the same blankets from the crate in the dog house along with chew toys, bones and tennis balls.

ehh kill yourself...
The people who lived in the apartment I live in now had a golden and she was perfect and calm and when the landlord showed me the apt she was nice and calm and came to say hi and let us pet her when nobody was home. Our apartment is prolly 800 sq ft. if you keep all the doors to all the rooms open. |

i have two husky mixes living with me in a 700-800 sq ft apartment, and they are perfectly happy. they get walked three times a day and we go to the dog park roughly three times a week. owning a dog and caring for them properly takes lots of time and some money. as a type this, maddy is laying down by my feet and chip is passed out on the bed. i don't know your situation, but if you don't have time or energy to raise a dog, sticking them in the backyard isn't the solution. my suggestion is to take some time to find a good home for your dog. pic whoring... |

Im gonna actually try and be slightly useful even though i agree with everyone else.. Are you looking to leave it outside at night? Or are you going to train it to be outside when you are at work, but inside when you are home? |

Yeah no kidding. WTH were you thinking? Dogs NEED human interaction otherwise they get depressed and all sorts of health problems. It's just cruel to leave it outside all the time. Give it to a good home and get a rat dog.

I'm going to politely agree with everyone else who's flaming you...
Seriously, why did you get a Golden if you can't handle it in the house? Goldens are the most loyal, loving, patient and enjoyable dogs to have in the house. After they hit 3-4 years old, they get all calm and regal and make fantastic kid dogs. Yes, they have copious amounts of hair. You can shave it and have a funny looking dog. But you did know that the dog was going to shed when you got it, right? I mean, I ASSUME you did some research before you bought it. You may have gotten it for free, however, in which case I won't flame you as hard because you likely didn't have time to research it. If you stick the Golden outside in the backyard 24/7, his beautiful long golden blonde hair will mat. Mats are uncomfortable. He will be very lonely and miss your company, since they were bred to be obedient and loyal to their masters and by their sides every day. He will wonder why he is out there. If you chain him, he'll feel trapped and begin to bark out of fear and possibly bite out of fear. Then you could have a lawsuit on your hands, lose your dog, or just be stuck with this psychotic, paranoid, frightened, dirty and matted mutt. Do the dog a favor and either A) Learn to accept him being in the house and buy a great vacuum and take responsibility for the life you have in your hands or B) Look into a local Golden rescue or general pet rescue group. It sounds like you didn't get a dog that will fit your needs, so please don't make him suffer. Thankfully, after thousands of years, we have hundreds of dog breeds all bred and developed for various purposes. There is a dog breed that's perfect for you, if you do a little research. For shame. |

What's wrong with leaving a dog outdoors assuming you provide an appropriate dog house etc?
They have fur coats on. I spend more time outside that inside so the dog would only miss me when I am at work or sleeping and if the dog was allowed inside he would be crated during those time anyway. I would rather be outside with a fur coat than sat in a crate indoors. |

It's not "outside" in and of itself that's the big issue with the OP. But getting a dog - in the OP, a TWO month old puppy - and banishing him to live ALONE in the backyard, with what sounds like minimal interaction with humans OR other animals, is just stupid and cruel and asking for problems down the road. Sure, dogs might be physically capable of surviving outside in most climates but that's not the friggin' point. Dogs are pack animals. In nature, the only time a dog is left alone is when it's pack leaves it to die. Dogs are ideal companions, born and bred for human companionship - dubyateeff get one if he's going to spend all his time outside, separated from the human family (ie., his pack)?
The exception would be if you've got some kind of farm, and your dog is a working dog with livestock responsibilities. Then maybe the dog would "live" out in the barn/field with the animals he is tending. But then the dog has a "job," which he is (theoretically) bred and trained for - that's far different than a golden puppy, a family pet, who is abandoned and isolated in some suburban backyard. |

I grew up with four Siberian Huskies that were always outside in a pen. They only came inside once a day for a treat. They slept outside in straw-lined houses in -20F weather.
Granted, they had each other for company (i.e., a pack). If I get a dog, I'd get two huskies and they'd be kept outside, but with shelter and each other as companions. That is the way they'd live "in the wild". Sorry dude, but a golden retriever? He should probably be kept inside... |
