Frustrated with these drivetrain noises - videos uploaded
So just a frame of reference, I have a WRX with a 07 STi transmission, automatic CF DS, and an early GD R160. Had this swap for the last 30K miles.
In the beginning of March, I started to notice a light thumping sound when I let the car cruise while in gear. The amount of "thumping" correlates with speed, so the frequency of the thumps decreases as the speed decreases. I've noticed that it happens most pronounced in 3rd gear and starting to let it cruise at 25MPH to about 20MPH. I don't feel any vibrations, or vibrations that changes when the sound starts and ends. Then about a month ago, I started to notice a fast ticking sound while cruising on the highway at 70MPH or so. It only happens around that speed and when I'm on the throttle. As soon as I am off throttle, it goes away, and when I am back on the throttle, it comes right back on. No vibrations or anything. Although it seems that the sounds are caused by different actions of load, I somewhat think they may be related. I've done a few tests to try and diagnose the issue. 1) Wheel bearings are at about 60K miles; I've done the wheel bearing play test by tugging at the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock. From what I read online about wheel bearing failures, it doesn't seem to be the case but I am not ruling it out. 2) I've been on my front axles for 60K miles; EPMI axles and they were a great replacement option. There was some grease right at the inner joint and outer joint clamps on the shaft but could not see any tears. I just changed out the axles last night with new ones since they were cheap enough and that did not make a difference so I'm ruling that out. Kind of stumped....I'm thinking of renting a chassis ear kit but hoping someone has gone through these issues before. I don't see where else to look except at the front knuckles, the CF driveshaft u-joint or I may have to have my transmission looked at which would cost $$$. So the videos I've captured are below: The first video relates to the first sound I described above. Start at 1:20 and you should hear 3 sets of that sound all the way to the end of the video, with the last set having the best sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LCR...ature=youtu.be This second video is of the highway sound. You can pretty much hear it from the beginning starting at 0:03. You kind of have to not focus on the gear whine and the slow tick tick (of my keys, I think) - sorry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZdQ...ature=youtu.be Thanks for helping. |

wouldn't wheel bearings maintain the sound when in neutral - just generally rolling? the car is quite silent when I put it in neutral and let it cruise.
Kind of more worried about the sound I hear on the highway when on the throttle than the first sound. It's just that I can produce the sound on the throttle. Once I lift, it goes away. As based on wheel bearing audio clips I hear on youtube, it doesn't sound like it. I guess I really don't have many options from this point forward. |
