Default STI Face Lift, please help

Does any one know for a fact if I can put the 02 -03 grill, fenders, hood and headlights on an 04 sti. I'm mostly woried about the head lights fitting, and if the smaller 03 sti scoop will give enough air to the intercooler. I'm not looking for opinions or rumors, just facts please. I need to know for sure before I buy my sti. Thank you in advance to the people who respond to this thread, I really appreciate it.

you can't not ask for opinions .. that'd be like having a subject title that said "DON'T READ THIS"

.. don't forget the front bumper ... you will also need this

I'm 60% sure that the bumper beams are also diferent ... the radiator support may be different as well, but I doubt that ... somebody else will have to chime in ... I don't think any one has even considered this ... you are the first person I've seen mention it ... that should give you some sense of what most people's opinion of the swap is.

Hey, I took the wing off. Many people think that is the worst possible idea ... De gustibus non est disputandum

Sounds like a nice weekend project to test out with a friend, then you can come back and tell us

But like others have said, I would imagine that the front bumper beam is wider (remember it's wider then the UK ones hence the issues getting the bigger fogs)

But that can probably be swapped out as well.

Hey,

I'm pretty sure that it's a 95% bolt on deal, and you have to make a few minor cuts to the body to fit the headlights, but that might be just to fit the '04 to the '02. You should be able to find somebody local to you to do a trade plus cash for you '04 front end, and you get their clean '03 front end.

When the '04s were "new" there was a company that had the parts in a kit to turn an 02-03 front end into an 04...(cant find it now)

In my best guess the major parts you'd need from an '02:
-Bumper cap & beam
-L & R Front fenders
-Hood with old scoop
-Grill & side peices
-Headlights
-Foglights
-skid plates & possibly inner wheel well plastic
-lots of little hardware
-a lot of tinkering/customizing incase they changed wiring & core support for headlight mounting...

Your best bet is to meet up with an '02-'03 owner & take there headlights & grill out & compare...

Call the dealership parts dept and ask if the front crossmember is the same or different with the 02 and the 04s.

Because I hate the sti grill and head lights but crave everything else. I love my morettes and body kit and I wouldn't buy the sti unless I could make the grill look like an 03. I'm sure some of you will say "then just stick to your wrx" Well my responce is the wrx trany is crap and I want the 6 speed, the 2.5l engine, the vf 34 turbo, wheels brakes, dccd, the ic sprayer, and a brand new car. So I think it's a great deal for 10 grand and my wrx as long as I can definetly swap the front ends. So nobody is 100% positive that it would work.

Turbo Juice,

Base on the fact that you can put a 04 front end on a 02-03, I am sure you can put the 02-03 front end on the 04.

Good luck with your project.

Althought I dont own a WRX (I have a MY00 RS) and I dont have much experience with either the MY02-03 nor the new 04, I think I can safely assume that when Subaru redesigned the front end for the 04's, they did it as cheaply as possible, without having to re-engineer much, if any, of the existing MY02 frame.

It should be a simple bolt on affair....bolt on fenders, bumper beam, lights, etc....I seriously doubt there is much cutting required.

So yeah, I think its possible, and yeah I totally agree with you...the old STi is much more BADASS looking!

Rally Performance was the vendor selling the swap kit. They said it wa almost all bolt on, but would take quite a bit of time to do.

Here is an idea, just an idea. Are you getting the same color STI as your WRX? Buy the STI, swap everything over, and then sell the WRX afterwards with the new 2004 front end.

Couple things you may run into problems with. Your morrettes are not HID, the STI lamps are, may lead to a lot of wiring. I am not sure of the requirements of the two, but am sure they are different.
Also, no height adjustable feature in the headlights.

Other than that, all body pieces shoudl be nice and easy. I had considered something like this since I liked the old body style on my 2002 better as well, but decided it was not feasible or easy anough for my tastes

good luck though!

Thumbs up

I like it!

If you take off the STi badging too, you gain two things :
  1. A real performance "sleeper". People will never see you coming! ;
  2. You will drop way lower on the vandalism/theft/hate radar.

No it doesn't. Does it? I've always thought it was a vf34 turbo not vf 39. Can any one shed some light on this subject? And again thanx for all the info, I really appreciate it.

Default HyperRev Impreza magazine..

There's a recent edition of HyperRev's Impreza magazine that has a 2 page article on the things needed to do to convert a bug-eye to a cross-eye; I imagine these pages will be somewhat useful for you in doing the reverse. Once concern I have is the front clip around the headlights; iirc, for a bug-eye to cross-eye conversion, some part of the front clip near the headlights need to be trimmed. For the reverse (like what you're thinking of doing), you may need to trim other areas. I also recall seeing a photo on one of those pages where the fender of the cross-eye mounts slightly differently. For the bug-eye to cross-eye, the HyperRev magazine's solution is to place some washers and the original bolting point works quite well. If this is a must, I'm afraid you'll run into problems when trying to install the bug-eye fenders onto the cross-eye.

I'll see if I can find some pics off that magazine.

Good luck.
