Default Summer tire decisions

Oh boy,

flame suit on. Uncle Scotty shades....on.

lol

So here it is. I got into doing some HPDE last season and want a tire to do both DD and spend some time at the track. I am not expecting these tires to make it more than they year, if they do... thats a better ROI than I expected.

Track experience has been with my OEM Dunlop sp600's that I didn't find to be as bad as some people say (please don't argue about this). Yes there were a LOT of tire pressure adjustments that had to be made... for HPDE and not a competitive race it didn't seem to be a HUGE inconvenience...at the time. Traction seemed to be fine as long as the pressure was maintained around 33-35 psi.

One of the things my instructors mentioned towards the end of the season was the need for better tires. I don't plan to really 10/10 this car every track experience and having track dedicated wheels and tires isn't available to me yet.

This leads me to my question.

I see that on Tirerack that it appears that the Dunlop Starspec z1 is being replaced soon... The new Toyo R1r is now available and then there is also the Advan Neova. The Hankook RS-3 gets good dry results but not so good wet results (I'm still DD these during the summer).

1.) Coming from the SP600, should I look at a Max performance summer tire for a better experience both at my HPDE and on my DD?

I feel that if the MPS tires cost almost as much and I am not looking for a tire to last 20-30k miles I should go as aggressive as my budget allows.

2.) What are people's opinions about the newer technologies (RS-3 vs SSz1)?
I read an article that really put down the dunlops versus some UHP tires because of rubber and tread technologies (motortrend ?).

3.) If MPS is recommended, what are the thoughts about the Bridgestone S-04's or the Conti DW?

Thank you in advance.

Yeah, some of my questions actually were derived from Luke's sticky post about the best tires. It's almost 10 months outdated....and let's face it the questions are asked because how technical are tires anyway....they are round.

I'm was just hoping for someone's opinion based on experience doing the dd/hpde and tires that either coming from stock that one genre of tire really isn't much different than the other when coming from a stock type tire...or, that the extreme performance is just so over the top better in comparison.

Someone has a better idea of what's going on in the tire community than me, so I am asking for their input and why.

US,

Why so bitter? I've read your posts over an rant after rant. I apologize you think I'm looking to be spoon fed. I teach patients every day the same things their parents taught them when they are kids... I get the same feeling of "when will they get it";however, in this forum alone when I searched a few different search strings the results create such an onslaught of bad or conflicting answers that I don't want make a bad consumer decision because some guy who works for Goodyear is running around about the new starspecs in January. So using the TIrerack surveys seemed to be a good research tool at the time.

I know/understand that a dd tire isn't going to have an edge on track tires but somehow I think there is a balance between meh on the street and good track feelings and visa versa.

I didn't know about hankooks poor reviews in the wet until I began to look at them again and didn't remember there being wet traction issues in the review.

Now that's said. Fk453, this is a different angle that I had thought about, I have had the fk452 and didn't think much of them.

The RS-r is something ill look more into, thanks for the suggestion.

Have you read this?

I do not have track driving experience so I will stay quiet, for a moment ;-)

Yes I did, I miss quoted it as a source. I thought it was a motor trend article.

I've heard very good things about the RS-3s as a street tire that handles HPDE abuse very well.

From my experience and my some my friends, I've never heard anything bad about hankooks rs-3 and the wet. Going 70-80mph in heavy down pour seems good enough for me.

If you got the money get mich. PSS, no doubt. But if you are like me, I'm going to be using federals RS-R for my next DD/track tires

I read a review about the rs-r that made them look bad. In sure it's been read 100x from the s2k forums where a guy reviews ssz1, rs3, RS-r, and another.. The name escapes me, his review marked the ssz1 and RS-3 as top 2 with RS-r in dead last, but still a good review on the tire. The thing he brings up is that the RS-r is fantastic unless it over heats then they are a mess for a long time (says the day is over).

That is the only bad thing I've read about them. I don't think I'm at a driving skill level that will push the tires to that level.

I'm leaning towards the RS-r but am still looking at the RS-3.

The up mode?

I agree, love mine, but in the wet it can be scary on the freeways here
they are cheap for what they are, and I believe you can rotate them left to right

For 17-inch wheels DD and occasional track/autoX, RE11 or RE070 is good;

If in tight budget for 18-inch wheels, Eagle F1 A2 and Potenza S-04 worth to have.

Per C&D test for a little more than S-04 money one can buy Michelin PSS which are supposedly better tires (and lighter too I think).
I bought F1 Asymmetric 2 at the beginning of summer and they are nice for a daily driver like me. I would not be able to tell difference between them and my previous Hankook Evo V12 comfort wise but Goodyear seems to have better steering response.

New as in a new tire brand for Tire Rack or new as in a new tire for one of the current brands that are already sold by Tire Rack?

Dunlop Star Spec ZII is supposed to be a new tire.
I suspect this may be the new player Luke writes above.

A new player sounds like a new brand.. or a new line of tire. Not necessarily a revised tire... at least to me.

I did some Ride and Drive events with bridgestone. There Potenza RE960 Pole Position has been my ultra high performance summer tire ever since.
