Stromung S.S. Single-tip muffler (WRX)
I just installed this on my wrx 2 hours ago and have been driving around since.
The install was very easy - no seized bolts since my car only has 58xx miles and has not seen winter yet. My engine is completely stock other than this muffler. I cannot tell if there is any change in performance yet... The volume of the exhaust certainly encourages lots of WOT driving and makes it easier to match revs smoother, and perhaps there is the perception that the turbo's spooling up faster although this could be because the sound makes you 1. downshift 2. step-on-it 3. get excited. The sound: I wanted a muffler to get some aural effect in my driving experience. Inside with windows closed: very very quiet. Just a hum. The exhaust tends to hum at medium volume and as you open up the throttle to WOT the hum becomes a faster "strumming" sound (hence stromung!). It's quite nice (would've been a great OEM exhaust). I thought at the higher revs it would get real throaty and raspy like my old Alfa Romeo but this one is a gentleman's sound - very subdued. Outside: The stromung sounds great at idle, nice duba duba duba duba sound. dubax2 when someone blips it Windows down driving is very enjoyable I am happy with this exhaust Would like to hear some other wilder sounding exhausts too, but this is definitely very liveable. paul

Paul, thanks for your post on the Stromung muffler. I'm considering getting one myself, and reading your post was helpful in my decision. I don't want a muffler that's too loud or buzzy, so I think the Stromung would be perfect for me. Reading your post makes me want to get one right away, you'd be a good salesman!

cool
mike shields says on his spd tuning site that the turbo spools up a couple hundred rpm earlier with the stromung. i think this is true, the car has got more "pep" in the 3 - 4 k rpm range, but you'll be finding out for yourself i guess ! A bit like the engine's good day vs. a bad day It's been a few weeks with the exhaust now. I like it, but i'm thinking of getting the 3rd cat eliminator as well just for a bit more volume. paul Last edited by paulatwork; 11-04-2002 at 09:29 AM. |

Well, I should be getting my Stromung single-tip tomorrow and can't wait to install it! Although the Stromung is quite pricey (you could get a Blitz and Prodrive axle-back or a Borla cat-back for a lot less), I know I'm going to be very happy with it. So how is yours holding up? Did you get the 3rd cat eliminator yet? If so, how is the sound and do you feel a difference in the last 1k rpms?
I'm not going to get too crazy with my mods, in fact after I get the Prodrive/EcuTek ECU and possibly the 3rd cat eliminator, I may just stop right there but then again I told myself when I got the WRX I would leave it alone |

I sure have put a lot of miles on the car since.
I haven't got any more exhaust mods But the muffler has been great. Remember to sponge it when you're washing the car to keep it nice & shiny I don't know if i've felt a difference, but the sound is essentially the same to me. It might've quietened down a bit, but it's still a lovely sound. You'll enjoy it, i promise! |

I drove around with just the muffler for two days before I added the 3rd cat elim pipe. I beleive it might help free up some back pressure and therefore help turbo spool up time.
But I really noticed a difference in power after the addition of the 3rd cat eliminator pipe. |

I just put the Stromung dual tip exhaust on today. The sound is incredible!! Nice deeeep rumble and turns heads. Only downside is that its a tad too loud for my tastes (also have downpipe/uppipe), and not as stock looking as I wanted it to be. I'll try to post sound clips later on. Overall I'm happy with it. Here's a pic:

That's interesting, my single-tip is soft by anybody's standards (all stock plumbing). I'm putting in a gutted uppipe at the next garage day, hope volume goes up

I still haven't heard any other WRX w/ aftermarket exhaust so this is all I have to go by. I guess I need to hear a loud exhaust like Blitz to appreciate the supposed subtleness of my Stromung. My other mods are jdm uppipe, bosal downpipe, and stromung midpipe (3rd cat elim). I'm going to put back my stock midpipe and see if it makes it any quieter.

I got mine from SPD, but there are various vendors who carry it. You can also get it direct from Stromung.
The Cobb version uses 3" tubing, whereas the Stromung uses 2.5". Personally, I prefer the 2.5" because of the earlier turbo spool-up with almost the same peak hp output. |

I've had the single tip Stromung for a while and I still love it! Perfect rumbling exhaust note and not too loud at all. I wanted a good muffler that wouldn't scream when I jumped on the throttle on the freeway, and that's what I got. Very happy.

Has anyone heard an xcceleration cat back (axle back and midpipe)?
They claim... "This one has a deep - mellow sound. It's sound is slightly louder than TurboXS and quieter than GReddy or Blitz. Just the right sound level for daily drivers who don't want to sound like a Honda, yet still hear the radio while driving and receive the performance you want! Full 3" pipe design, with 4" oval cut tip." I'm NOT looking for loud. Just a nice throaty burble. |

Hey Paul,
I'm curious if you got the regular round tip or the XA muffler with the knife cut tip? I think the knife cut is cool, but I can't tell if the XA tip is resonated. Does anyone know? XA: Thanks, Erik |
