If you use the 6.5k mile OCI that I'm using, that's good for almost 80k miles. That should last you awhile.

I've "only" got 6 of the black filters on hand....

3 years, but I plan to keep this car for another 6/ 150k after that. I bought this car with intentions of driving it for 10yrs/250k

Unless something changes and I don't have to commute as far or we just need a larger vehicle. Time will tell

If the Roki filters are now longer available, would the Mobil 1 or K&N filters be a wise second choice?

I keep hearing people say that Purolator PureONE filters are excellent. I have no experience with them, but I've read this in several places.

This is what I have read in the past. IIRC Purolator makes the Mobil1 filter as well as the Motorcraft filter. Both have good reviews.

check out bobistheoilguy.com for futher information.

I've always run Mobil-1, K&N, NAPA gold and Purolator pure ones. I've tried a few others but on my 4.0L jeeps I would watch the oil pressure gauge on cold start and they would take 10 seconds or more to build pressure on both the mechanical and the instrument cluster gauge. I stuck with the Mobil and NAPA gold, they built pressure the fastest, also depends on where I stopped but I would generally buy a case, 3 jeeps, at a time. Mobil-1 oil I get a walmart, they seem have the best prices on the 5 quart containers . Frams I have not touched since I had two cans blow off in the driveway back in the 90's on first stat up after an oil/filter change, up until then Fram was the default choice for most shade tree mechs.

forgot to add this to the thread after I had read about the recall on the blue subaru oem filters made by honeywell aka fram manufacturer. Might not affect our model but just more reason to use either the roki or a good aftermarket and avoid honeywell products all together.

Im not worried about warrantee issues with oil changes. Even if they did all the oil changes they could make something up if they didnt want to do warrantee work.

They cant force you to spend $70 each oil change.

I know MANY people are anti-FRAM (I have been too for many years now), BUT, I have read about these and decided to take the plunge. They seem like a VERY good filter and for $8.97 at Walmart for a dual layer synthetic oil filter, it's a good deal!

By the way, the filter the link takes you to is the one for our cars.

Yeah, they're good...but when a synthetic media filter that's built as good as royal purple's oil filters can be had for the same price as a regular wix or puralator, I'm all for it!

It's probably a fine filter, but when you can get the black OEM Subaru "160" (Roki) filters on eBay for $7 each, why would you bother?

Is the bypass spec'd the same? I thought most aftermarket filters were set much lower

edit:found it. subaru specs 23 or 24 psi for the bypass, that fram is 13psi. no thanks

Oil flows differently through paper (cellulose) and synthetic media. Paper media is more restrictive than synthetic media, so 23psi in paper is not the same as 23psi in synthetic. In other words, under the same conditions with both filters, they may actually operate the same way. I don't think the bypass valve is going to have that much of an impact.

Wix's filter is 28 psi (and also paper)....so why is more better than less? Seems to me a lower setting would be better than a higher setting, i.e. unfiltered oil flowing through your engine is better than no oil!

I guess I'll need you to show me some test data proving that a synthetic-media filter is automatically better for your car than a cellulose-media filter. We know that Roki/Wix filters have proven their excellence, so I'll need some proof that the Fram synthetic filter is even better still.

And the proof would have to show that the synth filter cleans the oil better, not that it lasts longer. I know that my combination of Amsoil OE oil and Subaru/Roki "160" filter is good up to 6500 miles (and probably beyond, as proven by the Used Oil Analysis I had Blackstone do for me).

So if your evidence that the Fram synth filter is better is because it has a longer life, I wouldn't care about that, since I change my oil and filter every 6.5k miles anyway.

Sorry, but when it comes to engine lubrication, I don't mess around, and so I'm not willing to assume that just because a filter is synthetic rather than cellulose, it must necessarily be better. I'm sure that's what the Fram marketing folks would like me to believe, but I don't without evidence.

If you're interested, here's my Blackstone UOA. Do you see any reason for me to change the products I use?

I'm not saying you or anybody else should change. I'm also not saying that synthetic is "automatically" better than cellulose for filter media.

The point I was TRYING to make, was that for people like me, who don't like to order stuff and pay for shipping, or just simply like the convenience of being able to run up to the store and get what you want, this FRAM Ultra filter seems to be a VERY good choice at a good price point.

^^ Well, that's not really what you were saying. You said "Paper (cellulose) vs synthetic media....I'll spend the extra $2". To me, this suggests that you think synthetic media, by virtue of simply being synthetic media, makes for a better filter that's well worth the extra money.

And you might be right. But I need evidence to be convinced.

By the way, the eBay vendor who I buy my Subaru/Roki "160" filters from doesn't charge for shipping.

That is true I did say that and I do believe a synthetic filter is better than paper BUT that is my opinion and I have no sources to cite for proof. Nor do I care to try and sway you enough to spend my time finding the info.

That being said, that wasn't my original intent. If you look at my original post, I was just letting everyone know about the filter.

As far as tax, yeah I don't think $0.64 tax is gonna break the deal lol

The synthetic filters filter smaller particles out than paper. There are all kinds of definitive studies, this one just happened to be the first hit.
