Default IT guys - need some excitement in your career?

I was googling for a job duties description of my job since HR can't figure it out themselves, and found this...

Hey! They have an Exchange Engineer Position! I wonder what the pay is...

WHA?! 12 hour shifts, 6 days a week...oh well, what else are you going to do there? The nightlife probably sucks anyways.

General - "Hey, how come I'm not getting my email from the U.S.?"

Me - "let me troubleshoot and find out"

As I find a vampire tap on the cabling in the data room, and I try to remove it before realizing it's rigged with plastic explosives.

so long OT, I chose "poorly"

Eh, I'm doing IT work in Baghdad right now, easiest money I ever made. All IT jobs out here are at least 6 figures.

It's closer to 200k and the first 80k is tax free. All depends on if you're will ing to take the risk. I'm doing it to get out of the IT industry cause I hate it. But, you also get a security clearance for most jobs out here- which can open doors for you back in the states. If anyone is thinking of coming out here they can feel free to PM me. I'll be here for another 22 months.

are you working in a public part of baghdad or part of an american compound? if the former do you have armed guards-- if the latter, do you ever get out?

I seriously would not do that job for 5x my current salary and I'm not too far from six figures now.

I do not have a bachelors degree or any certs. I work on an American compund near the airport. I have no want nor desire to leave the compund. We have armed soldiers all over the whole place. It is pretty safe around here in my estimation.

Drac9 - what is there to do in the compound when you're not working? Also are the typical hours 12 hrs. x 6 days?

I work 60 hour weeks. 5x12. On my two days off I go to the gym, or the movie theatre, do some fishing, go to the library, play some xbox, eat at burger king. Pretty normal stuff. The gym here rivals most health clubs.

Is all of that stuff in your "compound"? I'd seroiusly drop everything and go out there if offered, be hard to sell the wrx though.

I totally would do it if I didn't have a 5 year old.

The problem isn't living on the compound, the problem is getting to and from the compound...!

Eh, we flew right in to BIAP and were driven here- it's like 15 minutes from the airport. Not bad at all. And yes, all that stuff is here inside the compound.

Fishing? What the hell do you catch over there? Are there people there you can hang out with? Do you have many, if any friends over there that you work with? What is your typical day like? That sounds insane.

Man, there are some huge fish in these lakes here. They are all manmade lakes and supposedly Saddam and his sons were feeding people to the fish here. One dude caught a 55 lb carp. Lots of catfish, some bass, stuff like that in these lakes. Some really weird fish I've never seen too. I have some buddies here we all just hang out- no big deal you live and work together. I have other friends who came to iraq as well, but are in different camps than I am.
