TBird is acknowledged as one of the most challenging TSD rallies in North America.
Conditions are usually pretty extreme (given Totem was snowy I'd say TBird will be big fun this year). The average speeds are "brisk" given the conditions. There is risk to you and your vehicle. Make sure you have insurance coverage in Canada etc. You need (at a minimum): big lights, skid plates (Primitive), hand shovels, first aid kit, warning triangles (not flares!), snow/ice tires (e.g. Hakka 1, Hakka 10, Blizzak WS-50), cold weather clothes, water, etc. The event will again finish with an ice regularity on a frozen lake. The motto of the rally is "The navigator will have to do more than just push." Glenn |

Thanks for the info, this rally is going to be a blast, I can't wait. How far apart do the cars run and how do they select who goes
first? Are the route maps good or is it eaasy to get lost? |

Yes, prob around Cache Ck again this year.
Cars are run at 1 minute intervals. You can nominate where you go, though usually the first ten are experienced, unlimited/equipped class, AWD vehicles. (You don't want to be behind a 2WD vehicle). Let me know if you have any equipment questions. Allow extra travelling time to get there the day before as the roads can get blocked by winter storms etc. Sometimes getting there is as challenging as the rally iteself. Glenn |

Meant to say: route maps are very good and very straightforward. Usually you go off course because you have a brain fart, not because of the route maps themselves.
You will be busier worrying about the conditions and keeping the car on the road anyway. Priorities: 1) keep car on road 2) keep car on course 3) try and keep up to average speeds Glenn |

T-bird '99 is how I got into rallying.
That was my first 'motorsports' event, ever. I put the car into the snowbanks 3 times (got stuck all 3 times). I saw my first 'real' rally car there, in my life. I was hooked. Bring snow tires. I might disagree about the skidplates, in that they can't hurt but should be considered mandatory. On the lights, again, they can't hurt and should be considered more important than the skidplates (to me, anyhow). I would recommend (this is a turn-key setup) as Glenn: 2 shovels, of different kinds (i.e. one spade, one larger one) chains (for when you are really stuck and cant dig out) skidplates big ass PIAA 80 "Rally Professional" or equivalent headlights lots of warm clothes and the normal TSD requirements: See www.rallybc.com for details on that part. |

Pat will you be entering this years Thunderbird? Why is it so easy to go off the road, is it really narrow or lot of corners?
I have Hakka Q and they are awesome. Can you use better bulbs in the headlights to gain extra light? I will be getting a new Subaru Impreza so I don't want to spend any extra on it now |

The hella's will be plenty jamie, chains are a bit heavy for the excess bagage charges, handcuffs, i think i could cope with aditional cost of those somehow. LOL
I could always smuggle some european spec 130Watt bulbs in with me, thats what i run on my Impreza over here and they are pretty awesome. Just started working out to get me ready for the shovelling Hope my brain doesn't fart too much. |

There is another advantage to having a big skid plate. If you have a big, heavy car, the skid plate kind of acts like a ski and helps your car from sinking into the snow, too much. You should also keep this in mind, when you are stopping, because you will essentially be high-centered on your skid plate .

I saw the videos on the link that Jamie put up, and the event looks frighteningly fun.
Sorry if the information is in the website, but I wonder if the roads are usually private, in those types of events... Not that it matters, but I always wondered. Being a nut for more "controlled" condition racing (F-1, DTM, autocrossing, etc...), the rally is a revelation for me. It looks like a lot of fun I'd like to attend as an observer. What to bring...? |
