Maybe a stupid question, but what are the the potential problems associated with a car that consumes oil, in 1qt per 2000-3000 interval? I would guess excessive carbon buildup and clogged cat, but are there more serious issues?
I ask assuming the owner is going to hold onto the car until at least 100,000 miles. |

Do these fb engines have ringland issues? Rings, pcv, ringlands or valve stems are the only reasons I can imagine would cause consumption issues.

As yet I have heard of no problems with ring lands or valve stems, the fb seems pretty well built. |

Do you have a web-site or PDF we can reference about the TSB for the oil control rings? I am going to my dealer today to discuss with them about oil consumption.

I read the TSB and it doesn't indicate that they identified a design flaw...if they are replacing the oil control rings (and assuming pistons) on vehicles with excessive consumption, are they replacing them with a new design/material that wears better?

Hmm...I had to have my rings replaced in my '10 GMC Terrain due to a known oil consumption issue and they replaced pistons too, indicating that pistons wear with the rings. Wonder if subaru's really fixing the problem with just rings...and is the ring design different?

In order to get your car fixed for this TSB, do you have to do an oil consumption test even though your car was in the range of affected years?

Great info, Oceanguy. Strange that they would replace the fuel injectors.

My car consumes a half quart per 5k, which I don't have a problem with. My car has 15k on it and after reading all of these stories I'm worried about having issues later down the road when my warranty is up.

Good luck to those with consumption issues and congratulations to those that either accept it or don't have it! Like VW says - drive more, worry less |

So does this TSB only apply under the standard 36k warranty? What happens if you have excessive oil consumption at say 60k?

I believe our power trains have a 60k/5 year warranty. It's the rest of the car that is covered by the 36k/3 year bumper-to-bumper warranty.

There are no guarantees, but there's a good chance that Subaru would cover it outside of warranty. If there's a TSB, then that means there's a pattern failure/problem that is common to many cars sold, and Subaru doesn't want to sour a bunch of customers against the brand.

My theory is that engine braking with the manual transmission greatly accelerates the oil consumption. I'm going to monitor the oil level more carefully and see if that is true. Since the power train warranty goes for 60k I have a decent sized window to see if the problem gets worse. It's frustrating and I really hope that if we buy a Forester it doesn't consume oil like this; but at this point it's still not enough make another car more desirable or to make me consider selling it. If the problem gets worse and leads to other problems that would be a different story. Last edited by dromond56; 12-04-2013 at 01:54 AM. |

Not that I would ever advise lying, but if you've got pretty bad oil consumption that doesn't QUITE hit that 1qt per 1000 miles, it ain't hard to push it over the edge... a la mityvac.

Hey Oceanguy, glad everything worked out for you. I wish I was in the same situation as you and I didn't need my Impreza anymore. I would get rid of it in a heartbeat if I could.
I know I probably sound like a depressing broken record, but I'm still burning an unacceptable amount of oil after my short block replacement. Its hard to have a positive outlook on the longevity of this engine and everything else affected by excessive oil consumption. I would much, much prefer to unload this car before the miles really start to add up. Hoping I'll have the chance to do so in the near future. Last edited by jr0bb5; 12-04-2013 at 03:12 PM. |
