Where do you notice the water from the leak?

Maybe a stupid question, but what are the the potential problems associated with a car that consumes oil, in 1qt per 2000-3000 interval? I would guess excessive carbon buildup and clogged cat, but are there more serious issues?

I ask assuming the owner is going to hold onto the car until at least 100,000 miles.

Do these fb engines have ringland issues? Rings, pcv, ringlands or valve stems are the only reasons I can imagine would cause consumption issues.

There is a tsb for the oil control rings. They have been updated. 2013's and up should have the new rings.
As yet I have heard of no problems with ring lands or valve stems, the fb seems pretty well built.

Do you have a web-site or PDF we can reference about the TSB for the oil control rings? I am going to my dealer today to discuss with them about oil consumption.

I read the TSB and it doesn't indicate that they identified a design flaw...if they are replacing the oil control rings (and assuming pistons) on vehicles with excessive consumption, are they replacing them with a new design/material that wears better?

I was able to duplicate this with a garden hose and I took pics. They better completely remove the glass and reattach it, sealing it with silicone will not be acceptable as the glass and glue are structural.

Hmm...I had to have my rings replaced in my '10 GMC Terrain due to a known oil consumption issue and they replaced pistons too, indicating that pistons wear with the rings. Wonder if subaru's really fixing the problem with just rings...and is the ring design different?

I thought I remember seeing that the rings with the TSB fix are larger/bigger

In order to get your car fixed for this TSB, do you have to do an oil consumption test even though your car was in the range of affected years?

Great info, Oceanguy. Strange that they would replace the fuel injectors.

My car consumes a half quart per 5k, which I don't have a problem with. My car has 15k on it and after reading all of these stories I'm worried about having issues later down the road when my warranty is up.

I wanted to speak with the tech regarding his findings and get a better explanation of the repair but he wasn't in when I picked it up. I did drive straight to a mechanic that I trust implicitly as I had spoken to him considerably during the process. He was not very confident that this service would "fix" the problem but more mask it longer as he felt there is more going on than the rings. I can only imagine that the combustion chamber seeing the oil fouls up the injectors pretty quickly. Those that consider the down the road chain of events I feel are correct in considering O2 sensors, Cat Converter (but they last a good long while to begin with due to the reason they are on there in the first place), et al. I sold the car and this just helped the decision - we ended up with an extra car due to a death in the family so it really wasn't needed (more like the car payment wasn't needed). All in all, I can't say I was displeased with the dealer that ended up servicing or what SOA finally did - the early goings and denial were the difficult portion claiming it was normal - after initially saying it wasn't normal. Please understand these were their words, not mine. Then the conversation changed to become "acceptable". Every time my wife drove to the dealer for their 1000 mile dip stick check (usually around that time was when the oil light would come on), I instructor her to say, "You still think this is acceptable"? Her good nature would not bring her to say it though...
Good luck to those with consumption issues and congratulations to those that either accept it or don't have it! Like VW says - drive more, worry less

So does this TSB only apply under the standard 36k warranty? What happens if you have excessive oil consumption at say 60k?

I believe our power trains have a 60k/5 year warranty. It's the rest of the car that is covered by the 36k/3 year bumper-to-bumper warranty.

You are right, my bad. If it is a TSB though, would they cover it out of warranty, say at 90k? Probably not, then?

There are no guarantees, but there's a good chance that Subaru would cover it outside of warranty. If there's a TSB, then that means there's a pattern failure/problem that is common to many cars sold, and Subaru doesn't want to sour a bunch of customers against the brand.

On a side note, I would personally not purchase another Impreza for my wife if mine was an oil burner... Just my .02¢
I called up customer service at 1-800-SUBARU-3. The representative first parroted the "less then 1 quart burned per 1,200 miles in within the manufacturers spec" line. I explained that while that is true, it is very disappointing to the customer who has to perform added maintenance and worry if their engine will last as long as it should. I also explained that it is a great car other than this problem, and that we are considering an additional Subaru (Forester) but that having a new car consume this amount of oil is extremely discouraging. She offered a $500 service voucher to defray the cost and hassle of adding oil, which I thought was the right thing to do. It's not that this problem makes the car junk, just that you have to frequently check and add oil.

My theory is that engine braking with the manual transmission greatly accelerates the oil consumption. I'm going to monitor the oil level more carefully and see if that is true. Since the power train warranty goes for 60k I have a decent sized window to see if the problem gets worse. It's frustrating and I really hope that if we buy a Forester it doesn't consume oil like this; but at this point it's still not enough make another car more desirable or to make me consider selling it. If the problem gets worse and leads to other problems that would be a different story.

Not that I would ever advise lying, but if you've got pretty bad oil consumption that doesn't QUITE hit that 1qt per 1000 miles, it ain't hard to push it over the edge... a la mityvac.

Hey Oceanguy, glad everything worked out for you. I wish I was in the same situation as you and I didn't need my Impreza anymore. I would get rid of it in a heartbeat if I could.

I know I probably sound like a depressing broken record, but I'm still burning an unacceptable amount of oil after my short block replacement. Its hard to have a positive outlook on the longevity of this engine and everything else affected by excessive oil consumption. I would much, much prefer to unload this car before the miles really start to add up. Hoping I'll have the chance to do so in the near future.

I can only suggest a lemon law attorney. What is considered acceptable to a manufacturer, does not have to be acceptable to the consumer. If you have all of the factory service records and documentation of the oil consumption issue, you will be better off.

Best of luck!
