What Cars Came With A Rear LSD?
Since the FAQ was getting huge with my single question posts, I figured I would do a different format and create a new thread. I'm poking around in the FSM's, and while they give a LOT of information, there are a few holes as to which models actually had the LSD. Please feel free to correct me if I have made an error.
Unless specified, the LSD uses male axles and is a viscous coupling unit. My '91 Legacy Turbo 4EAT has a 3.900 LSD.
I don't believe it was just 5MTs that had 'em. |

i dunno
diffs don't bolt directly to the sub frame so if you had the right bracketry ... yeah i guess? |

And you can also add 92-94 Liberty/Legacy RS and RS-RA to the list
... Also...didnt the 1999 Impreza have rear LSD as well? I thought it was the first year, because my car certainly does, and I never switched out the rear end. Unless the owner before me did. |

The 99 Impreza 2.5RS's had it, I thought. I was pretty sure just the 98's didn't, for that body style. Neil |

Lemme see if I remember.
Many of the late model axles have a male end that inserts into the rear differential. Some of the older models required axle stubs because the axles themselves did not have a male end. The axles were a flange type kind of similar to the front axles (but not really). For this to work, the rear differential requires a 3-4" long axle stub to which the axle will mount to. -Jon |

anyone know if the wrx lsd is compatible with the older impreza L rear ends (as far as mounting goes, not the actual gear ratios)

You'll have to either source newer axles or take the stubs from your current diff and insert them into the LSD first. Also, you'll have to do some minor clearance grinding inside the older housing to fit the (slightly larger) LSD in place. There is some good info in the drivetrain forum by Joel Gat regarding the swappage and fitment issues of LSD's, both OEM and aftermarket. It's my understanding that with the older diffs, you can remove the stubs and then use newer type axles. (without taking the ring gear into consideration) Jay Storm |

so i can source a wrx lsd rear end (complete), then i can make it work with that and just inserting my old impreza L stub axels into it, then using my existing axels.
i'd like to keep my existing axels if possible. thanks for the info |

2001 was the last model the RS (2.5) came with a rear LSD. It's open, in other words, it doesn't compensate for power differences between the rear wheels, same goes for the front one.

How can you tell if you have an LSD differential with out opening it up? I have one that is supposed to be from an 02 WRX. I'd like to know that I didn't get cheated.

a sube tech at a dealership said that the svx rear end wont directly bolt into the rear of an impreza. i'm not sure if he also ment the axels are the wrong length or if its just the housing wont fit into the existing bracketry. anyone have any info on this? i was under the impression that all newer rear ends would bolt into the impreza, set aside the whole stub axle thing.
and is the svx rear really a R180? |
