EJ20G intermittent starting issue
I've been experiencing some intermittent starting issues with my ej20g swapped rs. You can smell fuel when this happens and I hear the pump prime. The car just cranks but won't catch. The first time it happened I thought it was out of gas since it was low but this time I'm over 3/4 tank and it's still doing this. The only thing I've changed is the coil conversion but that was a few months ago. This issue just came about a few weeks ago. I'm so tired of working on this car. I just want to finally enjoy it.

Check crank sensor:
Pull sensor clean sensor Put sensor back Try starting car. If improvement occurs obtain replacement sensor and install. If no improvement is present continue seeking the source of the trouble. |

I think it turned out to be a bad connection on the battery. These cars seem like they're more particular than most cars when it comes to the terminals. Pulled the terminal cleaned all the connections and no more backfires and it's started everytime so far. Fingers are crossed.

Ok, thought it was fixed but it's still doing it. Pulled the crank sensor and cleaned it. I'm gonna try to replace it and see if that helps.

Yes, but it's warm here now. I was told that if you floor it when it won't start and it starts that it's probably the maf. I think it has something to do with a bad connection on my coil conversion. I was never very good at wiring so I'm going to go over everything and make sure it's good. What was your issue?

Okay, changed the MAF and it's still doing the same thing. I'm stumped. Anyone else had this issue? It seems like it's totally random.

Have you checked for spark when it won't start?
You're getting into specifics before you even test the basics... Obviously it is not a fueling issue, my next guess would be a spark issue. Test for spark next time it won't start. If that happens to be the case then I would check the ECU ground on the driver's side rear of the valve cover. Should be somewhere around there. I had an intermittent spark issue on my Legacy and it happened to be the ECU ground was not torqued properly after I dropped the engine back in |

Don't know if you have one or not, but what about the fuses? My car had the same issue recently and it appears to be fuse related. Fuel pump primed and turned over like a champ. Pulled the ignition fuse and popped it back in and it started up. Even if a fuse does not appear to be blown they can still be bad. Like was said, check for spark and that should tell you.

I'm going to have the codes pulled tomorrow and see if it's throwing anything.
