09 with possible engine knock
I picked up an 09 wrx sedan with 53XXX miles on it 3 weeks ago. This morning i started the car and i herd a faint knocking sound coming from the engine. i did a lot of research online before buying this car because of all the engine failures, and i made sure the it had a build date past 09/08. Its build was 11/08 and i did not see any issues with other cars with a similar VIN#. Later in the day i started the car again to listen closer to the sound. the more i listen the more it sounds like a knock (it seemed to get louder as well). Is there another issue that makes a knocking sound in these cars that i dont know about or is it time to look into a new engine.

I let the car warm up for 10-15 min when it got a little warmer today and the sound seemed to get more constant. when i started it this morning it knocked three times then stopped for half a second then three again. after i let it warm up it seemed like constant knocking.

the car does have a warranty, and it's still covered under subarus 5 year 60,000mi coverage. I called the dealership i got the car from today (it was a hyundai dealership) and they told me that engine issues should be covered by subaru because of the warranty and to bring it to there mechanics. i just want to have a better idea of whats going on so i can make plans to drive something elce while this is being worked on. Also when i rev the car i dont hear the knock but once it goes idle i can hear it loud and clear. i will try to get a sound clip tomorrow.

did you get any type of warranty with this car?
also does the sound go away after several minutes? if so, it could have forged pistons. if the sound is rpm dependent it could be rod knock. but no sound byte |

the audio is not very good. you can hear the sound in the background but for some reason it sounds faint in comparison to standing next to it. edit: this was all idle |

Does it sound like it is coming from the front of the engine? Might want to check the timing belt and pulleys/tensioner just to make sure.

Sound does seem to be coming from the front. Hopefully its just pulley wobble.
I was going to bring it to the dealership on a flatbed, (so as to not cause any more harm) but because of my work schedule its hard to get to a dealership when there still open. Plus im still not sure if i should take this to the dealership i got it from or if i should take it to the Subaru dealer? |

Sounds like a drive pulley bearing from what I can hear. Car is just too new to start ripping it all apart expecting the worst. Get some WD40 or something and douse all the rotating bits on the front of the motor (i.e., tensioner pulleys, alternator, AC clutch, power steering pump, all that stuff). It is cheap and an obvious place to start. Don't go buying a long block just yet dude!

It will for a few seconds, but that is all. The main point was to spray the rotating bits, such as bearings and shafts. Some will get on the belts, but it is not the end of the world. You can use any lubricant spray. I only use silicone-based spray, but to each his own.

Nope. The drive pully is turned by the crankshaft, which is lubed by the oil in your car. Drive pulleys don't squeal for this reason. Don't let that guy scare you. The point was to lube up the bearings and shafts on ALL the rotating bits that your drive pulley, well drives. Getting some on your belts will not hurt you any, but try to avoid it if possible. It is not possible to lube the bearings and shafts without getting some on your belts.
This is just to rule out any bearing/shaft dryness causing your noises. Last edited by Hoon Goon; 01-23-2013 at 10:14 AM. Reason: I don't want to talk trash! |

BTW, with all the salts used on the roads up there where you live I would be pretty confident that this is your issue. That salt spay plays havoc on that stuff at the front of the engine bay.
Your car is too dang new to be pulling crap off and replacing stuff. Start with the most resonable and simple solutions FIRST. The method of elimination does wonders! |

Hey, I can see why you asked this after rereading my post from last night. I was "trying" to say your belt driven pulleys, such as alternater bearing, tensioners, power steering shaft (behind the pulley). My bad. I bet you have a dry belt tensioner (I have had many of those go bad on many cars). The lube will quiet it up for a while, but you will eventually need to replace it. Do it methodically while the car is running (be carefull). It will quite right up when you hit that dry area (if this indeed your issue). Do one bearing/shaft at a time so you can pin-point the bad bearing.
Sorry for the post Blitzkreig, but man it kills me seeing everyone expecting the worst. It may be as bad as some of the others on here have been trying to say, but it always makes sense to rule out the obvious. These cars are not made out of glass, even though reading through these threads may suggest otherwise! Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. These are not Corrolas or Civics and that is a good thing. Good luck and keep us posted man! |

Thanks for all the replies! The car sounds much better. i ended up bringing the car to the dealership anyway (had some minor exterior work i needed done). So im going to have them take a look over the engine and see if any of the pulleys need to be replaced.

Picked the car up today from the dealership. they said that the bolt that held the pulley was loose and needed to be tightened. Having done a decent amount of car work before in multiple shops i feel foolish now for how scared i was that this was anything so severe, but this is the first car i have gotten myself in a while and i guess i got paranoid when i heard about all the issues other 09 owners have had.
