Default High-tech golf ball-inspired tyre

Quote:
New rubber clad with sidewall wings and golf ball dimples designed to improve the way cars stick to the road.

We all know what tyres are, right? Those big hoops of rubber that fill up the wheel wells, forming the only point of contact between car and road.
You'll be taking a lot more notice of them soon if South Korean tyre maker Hankook has any say in it.

Hankook has unveiled an aerodynamic tyre with six "winglets" on the outer side which are said to be able to provide extra downforce at high speeds, acting directly on the car's axle in order to maximise grip.

Three of the winglets also sport golf ball-style dimples that Hankook says ''create a micro-vortex as the tyre rotates and assist in reducing aerodynamic drag created by the winglets below them''.

"The impetus for the development of Ventus Aero has been to scoop out the largely unused aerodynamic possibilities when it comes to tyre design," says Hankook's marketing boss Hyun Shick Cho.

According to the company, the Ventus Aero aerodynamic sidewall technology will appear first in its racing tyres, and is likely to be incorporated into a new generation of ultra-high performance road tyres for sports cars.
