Top Speed?
OK, after hearing the stories here and there, I decided to test this out... On the way home from work today, I thought, hey lets go REALLY FAST!! SO anynway, Im travelling down the road, hit 120, and the car shifts into Overdrive, and I thought WOW! Only just NOW hitting overdrive, well much to my dis-appointment 126 rolled around and that was it?? Keep in mind mine is a 93... I swear I heard faster...

I had my 93 up to 130 once, with plenty left. I decided that was fast enough for me. Not sure why yours would stop at 126, maybe time for a tune up?

I've had my 94L up to ~130 for long periods of time. At this speed, it's running into a rev limiter at 4500 rpm.
The point at which the TCU decides to change gears depends on a lot of stuff, notably the throttal position, so that's why it was waiting so long to switch it back in. From what I understand, pre-94 cars do not have the rev limiter, and can probibly do above 155mph. If you could disable the limited, I'm sure post 94 cars would do the same.. at the moment, the only way I know to do that is to buy a powerchip from aus for $600USD. The final top speed depends highly on aerodynamics.. if you were driving into a headwind that could work against you.. not sure if it could bring you all the way down to 126 tho. How quick you reach that top speed depends on the torque output (including the leverage presented by the transmission).. and lets just leave that by saying the top gear accelleration of an SVX "could be better." You should be able to get to at least 130, but it will take some time, and a considerable distance. My standard disclaimer: doing this sort of thing is *Really* stupid.. and can get you killed very easily. If you don't have any appreciation for how long it takes to slow to 60mph when you're going 130... let me tell you, it's a LONG LONG LONG distance. When you're going at such speeds, physics is in control, and you're mostly along for the ride. Better to do that riding on a closed circut. |

I think a tune up might definitely be due. I have a 95, (one of the slower SVX's they say), and I too was up to 130 with what felt like more to go. I just ran out of room to slow down. Do you have any mods? what were the conditions like?

Okay, i'll play the part of the "fool". I have had my SVX LSI over 140mph before Why my car was able to go over 140mph I do not know because I should have the limiter on my '94. Maybe the previous owner took it off somehow Does anyone know where the limiter is? What kind of limiter it is? While not on a closed circiut I had friends who drove ahead and let me know(cell phone) when their was enough room to see what the top speed of my car was. I used I81. Flat, really no curves to worry about, and no cops(open eyes of my friends) to "compete" against. It was around 5:00 AM. There was enough daylight to see with and the addition of my highbeams for the added saftey. Yes, it does take a long, long, long, long time to slow down. I will attest to that. I let the car slow down very gradually so not to warp the rotors or eat the brake pads. I will also say it was probably not too smart to go that fast. Atleast I planned ahead w/ my friends to make it safer!!!!!

My 93 has seen 135 without straining too hard. Sounds like something may not be well.
How are your 02 sensors and spark plugs? Another possibility could be a slightly plugged cat. converter. Or even a very dirty air filter. Maybe it's tune up time. Is your mileage ok? |

I doubt its mileage. Just the other day I had my 95 with over 100k up close to 140 on Route 283 in PA. Granted I don't think it would have gone any faster from what I've heard about rev limiters on 94 and newer but it sure got up there in a hurry so power wise unless there is something wrong with the engine a pre 94 should be able to achieve 145 even with some breeze.

I have had my SVX at an indicated 155ish MPH. (The tach was at about 5600RPM, in 4th gear)
The engine is quite loud at 5600RPM. Almost as loud as the sound of the air passing by your car. This was done in a western state on a flat, straight section of interstate between I was chasing down a GS 400 at the time. There is no way I should have been able to go that fast (speed limiter). I glanced at my speedo, and my first thought was "What about the speed limiter" followed by "what is the speed rating of my tires" followed by "Let's ease off the gas now". On this same section of interstate a few weeks later I tried, and failed to catch a WS6 Firebird. All this was done back when my SVX was still stock. |

I meant gas mileage, not actual miles :-) Or are there any check engine codes set? You may want to do the SVX reboot and disconnect the battery overnight to reset things and try again. |

Now that I think about it more, it was likely 145... whatever the speed was, it was faster than the spead limiter was supposed to allow. Perhaps it was napping?
I am certain about the 5600RPM. It was interesting to go that fast, but not all that exciting. Did I mention how noisy the car was? :P I'd rather take curves at > twice the rated limit than a straight at > twice the posted limit ANY day. |

My speedometer has registered 140, one late night/early morning. I love flying through a state in just a couple of minutes! That was when my AWD was even broken! I wonder how fast my SVX can go now with the new/stronger tranny? I haven't really taken it past 125 since then. That was enough for me on these congested roads over here.
Try to slam on your brakes at those speeds when someone tries to cut you off! I stood on my brake pedal, the car started MOANING, and it kept going!! My SVX finally slowed down a couple yards behind the other car! PHEW! And it had over a quarter mile lead when I spotted it! Don't they check their rear view mirrors? I always drive with my PIAA headlights on, day or night, so my low car is more visible. I think the guy just saw me coming and wanted to piss me off! My ROTORS are SHOT (warped) now, and my pads are just about gone! It's time for a brake UPGRADE! I'm trying to decide on what to get. Price isn't an issue when lives are at stake! I think CRYOGENICALLY TREATED, gas SLOTTED rotors are the ONLY choice for rotors. They're hard, strong, and HIGHLY warp resistent. I don't know what kind of pads to get though. I've heard good and bad about Axxis Metal Master pads. Are there any other contenders out there? How many choices do we SVX'ers have? I heard that we share the same/similar braking system with the Nissan Pathfinder. Also I heard that the EARLIER Impreza WRX rally cars used SVX size rotors for their BIG BRAKE KIT/SYSTEM. So perhaps they ALSO used our type of pads too??? Hopefully some Impreza gurus can chime in on this one too! We have to compare part numbers and/or size and shape specs! Eric |

I replaced my rotors with drilled/slotted after getting stress fractures in the STOCK rotors. The folks who supplied me with my new rotors told me that they were dimensionally identical to the ones used on the Nissan Pathfinder (Lots of Nissan parts in Subaru cars).
I agree that near redline in overdrive, it will take a long time to stop. Really. And you can stop ONCE. Then you have to drive slowly (40-50mph) to get the airflow across your brakes so they cool evenly without warping. And don't even think about using them again for the next 20-30 minutes. My aunt and uncle have a '92 SVX. He used to race cars for ferrari in sicily, so he took me out one day on the NYS T-way west of Albany, and w/o AC on we were doing 145 in no time. He had more left, but figured we should slow it down. I've heard on the track they have had '92s up to 156mph.

I took mine up to a little over 130 and she had plenty left! I decided to slow down when I remembered I was driving on a tire that was speed rated at 120 -- I think I have a permanent crease in my Driver's side leather where, at that point, my butt began to eat the seat!

I've gone up to 135 easy..., never even got past 4-5 thousand rpms and thats with
another person in my car and atleast another couple hundred pouinds of clothes and computers (driving down california highway 5 back to school UCLA) I can definately go a lot faster by myself, (no mods) But of course I would never go that fast for any sustained amount of time 1992 Dark Teal SVX [This message has been edited by htyei (edited January 08, 2001).] |

The # of people in your car does not effect your top speed as much as the number of people sticking thier arms out your windows.
Weight has a big effect on acceleration, but for top speed the drag coefficient is far far more important. |

Rumor is that the 92's are the fastest and have the most hp the speed limiters/computers were not dialed in correctly so 145 to near 150 is poss with that year they say.
but they say also that the later models they caught the mistake so none are supposed to go over like 135?? anyone?? i'm not an expert but a speedo is only accurate up to like 70-80 or so then it can/could error by a bunch the faster you go. that is not to say it may read accurate either. with out a radar gun and that stretch of hwy out west i dont think we will ever really know. 92 svx in porsche arena red met |

I have an SVX with the allegedly corrected speed limiter, and I have been significantly faster than 135.
My SVX was faster than a speeding Lexus GS... 145-150-ish mph IIRC, and the tachometer agreed with the speedo (unless my speedo was REALLY broken, and I was at 6K RPM in 3rd gear) |

When I used to own my '92 LS-L, I drove it up to an indicated 144 in a Western state, reaching the 5500rpm rev limiter. The car was very stable, the Pronghorn antelope on the side of the road less so, so I backed off before one tried to make a dash across the road. There is no way you want to make very quick movements of the wheel at that speed. It was very fun. Mathematically, without the rev limiter, it should be able to do 163 or thereabouts.
YMMV. |

one night on I-240 here in memphis at about 2am i did about 138mph in my 94svx and it felt like i had pedal left. i did have to brake quickly before i could test the theory because some MF in an explorer swerved over into my lane. mine is front wheel drive and not awd and it is very stable at high speeds.
