ordering a JDM 2.0l from japan. good or bad idea?
have an 03 wrx thats down for the count because of a spun rod bearing. the local subaru shop and i have decided to order a 2.0l sti engine that is used and imported from japan. works for me because ill have more power and have plenty of spare parts to sell. the shop has done this twice before with great success. i suppose im wondering if you guys think this is a good idea or not, or if any of you have done this with success. i have a fidanza 4.3 clutch and a lot of aftermarket parts to accomodate this engine already so there is no need to urge me to buy stronger parts.

you should ask them what year and engine code...
If i can look at the motor, i'll know what it is. |

I'm curious if the shop guarantees that that the engine they intend to import from Japan for your is in good condition? do they offer any kind of warranty that the engine they will put in is prolem free?

Any engine is just about better than yours.
I"m not familiar with emissions, or which engine your getting, but any JDM STI engine will be an upgrade. It just depends if it works. That is the Million dollar question. Think warranty and think about it A LOT!!!!!!!! Don't be a tool. ie. tools get used. 2cents. |

i recently did a jdm V7 in my 05 cause i also spun a bearing. I found a broken hose hooked up to the boost solenoid, my turbo inlet was completely torn and coil packs and sparkplugs where not torqued at all. So it's a great investment the V7 but make sure they go over everything and i mean everything before installing it. Are you doing the tranny too? I didn't but i am aware our 5spd won't last long at all....who is doing your install

not every "STI" engine is an upgrade and there are roughly 12 years worth of production that won't be compatible
and i wouldn't work with a shop that didn't know this |

Who is "the shop"? As everyone asks about the warranty it is quite a gamble. Is the exporter backing the reliablity of the engine or is "the shop"? Just have evrything in writing about who is responsible IF THIS......................................... goes wrong.
Nobody really can give a good history on an engine because, how can you tell if someone beat the hell out of it or drove it nottofast? |

JSpecAuto just moved to Asheville, VA. from Quebec. I just picked up a V.8 EJ207 from them a couple days ago. they have a 60 day warranty. when i was there, i picked from 2 version 8's. mine had a defi boost controller and an aftermarket o2 sensor. probably a wideband. the other one had a grounding kit on it and a block-off plate on the recirc hose for the stock bpv, so it had a front mount. they were both clean and looked like pretty low mileage. the wiring harnesses were pretty hacked up though. and they didn't have the intercoolers either. but they did have all the rest of the accessories and VF-37's. I pulled the plugs on mine, and they were perfect. didn't check the plugs on the other engine. both of them turned pretty freely with a ratchet on the crank. since the plugs were so clean, i didn't bother looking inside the iacv for blowby clues. that's about the extent of what i can tell you about the other engine they had there. they might not even have it anymore - i think i picked up mine on the 30th. but give them a call. they were easy to deal with, and the two 207's there were pretty clean.

I have an EJ207 with 17k on it for sale near NYC. You can do any tests you want to it before picking it up if you're interested.
I definately would go with an EJ207, but don't know if I'd bother sourcing it from Japan. Shipping is killer and there are some already in the states for probably $4500-$5000. I'm selling mine pretty cheap if you're interested, full longblock. |

hey guys, sorry that i have been missing in action. im for sure going to get a ver 7 or 8 ej207and will have a complete leak down test when recieved. i do understand that there is a risk involved and i am exersicing every possibly option and warraty thats available. and rest assured i will go over all piping and electics and make necessary repairs. i assume coilpacks and similar parts are interchangable? then ill just simply transfer over my aftermarket goodies and have a lot of spare parts to sell and or give-away to those who are in the same predicament as me or looking to upgrade. no sense in keeping two vf-30s around unless god forbid something else should happen

after reading over some more posts. a local shop that does primarily subaru cars will be working under the hood of my car. they have also done a swap like this before, twice. i will not be getting the 6 speed along with it because i dont currently have the funds for all that. parts i will be replacing right off the bat are as follows:
clutch air intake turbo inlet pipe down pipe up pipe intercooler blow off valve and possibly: injectors (i have a set of sti pinks already) turbo (with the vf30 i currently have) |
