Default DIY JDM to EDM (RHD to LHD) sti bugeye projectors beam pattern

Hi everyone,

So I have this set of sti projectors that I've been meaning to fix (broken lense so I bought a broken projector to scavenge the front lense off of) and I wanted to do something about the beam pattern. I've heard of people grinding them down flat with bad results and I don't have the money now for edm's or a retrofit. I do have money for high temp epoxy putty. Here's how it went.

original cutoff pieces notice the slope to the right.

the epoxy used (home depot)

the result after some filing, grinding, putty, and shaping

I couldnt' get a ridge on the top of the horizontal part like the originals had so I just left it flat, might not be as crisp, but I'm happy with the result needs a bit more flattening on the horizontal part, but not as much as the picture makes it out to be, I'm just anal. The thickness of the piece more or less mimmicks the old ones only mirrored on the other side. I'll prime them and paint them grey and put it all back together in the next week.

interesting idea. I was contemplating the same thing, as well as trying to recreate a corrected mask from aluminum, and just decided to do a full tsx swap. Have you had a chance to try out the pattern yet?
On a side note, I have 2 pair of those masks..one pair exactly like yours and one pair that has more body to it, probably off an earlier casting. If ya want, I could sell em to ya if ya wanted to experiment a bit. Didn't wanna jack the thread, just thought I'd offer up something else to play with.

Anyways, let us know the outcome of the mod.

any update on this?

I think this issue is overlooked.

i made a post here
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...&postcount=285

about why rhd pattern is so problematic-

this solution seems very difficult since even the smallest change in distance of the shield(a half a millimeter or so) can blur and throw the focus off of the cutoff. a cutoff too sharp will leave a very high local contrast in the field of view, and a cutoff too gradual will increase glare and necessitate down-aiming.

that, and a flat cutoff leaves parts of the roadside dark for too long at high(40+) speed.

if the cutoff could be built up to one side as much as it's filed down on the other, while keeping the focal distance of the shield edge basically exactly the same from the optical surfaces- and keeping the "step up" notch in the exact same place only perfectly reversed- this could be a VERY good idea.

I just said 'forget this' and made my own headlights with 06 wrx h7 projectors- i'm VERY happy with those results. it's not easy, but i'm pretty sure it's easier than getting this shield mod exactly right. as an added plus, my jdm's are safe and unharmed where i can oggle them in peace without having anyone crash into them in a parking lot or anything.

all the same... this:

(jdm aimed down with the cutoff ground down flat)
is an improvement over this:

(jdm aimed down)
even if it isn't this:

(lhd beam)
