Default Help Me Spend Money on Car Audio

Hey. I have a credit at Visions but I need to spend $400 to make it work. I want invest in car audio with the money but not sure what to get.

What would you buy with $400-$500 at Visions?

http://www2.visions.ca/Catalogue/Cat...x?categoryId=1

I already have a nice Clarion HU but otherwise it's stock junk on my 02 WRX. I don't want a crazy boom boom set up. Just something to make my diverse taste in music sound better at higher volumes.

You should give me the 400 and I'll make sure to spend it well.

I'd just replace all your speakers with better ones that will suit the output of your head unit. I have no idea for brands etc. I used to have a Jeep YJ with the speakers on the roll bar but with the top off or even on at highway speeds you couldn't hear music for $h1t so I upgraded and put a little bazooka tube in the back with a small amp. This was WAY back in the day but combined for great sound. I imagine you can fit in 4 x 6" (or whatever size is in the WRX), plus 2 x tweets for about $400.

OR, sell your credit if it's possible, I'm sure someone would buy it for $350.

i would buy mid's & remote tweets. for both doors and installation you should be less than $400 depending on quality of speaker.

I should clarify. My credit is about $200 but I have to spend min. $400 to use it. Installation won't be at Visions so that will be separate.

I have been considering the Radar detector as well but would hate to lose it as they are illegal in N.S.

I have been thinking of component 6.5" fronts and 5.25 rear coaxial but I don't know what I'm doing with car audio and my research doesn't seem to be making me much smarter. Hence, I turn to the "great minds" of the VIC.

I already know where I'm going so I don't need that.

spend the money on the front speakers....go cheap on the rears....rears dont matter nearly as much as the fronts...definitely get a good set of components and a decent amp...that'll probably take up your 400$ right there....just get a 2 channel amp for the fronts, power the rears with the deck.....

i stopped caring about stereos i guess about 5 years ago now, so i have no idea what brands are good anymore...lol

i've always been a fan of CDT component speakers....awesome speakers for the price..maybe pick some up on the interwebs, then use the 400$ at visions for amp and maybe a sub+amp

also dont get ripped off on wiring....the price some places charge for wiring kits its outrageous...you only need quality RCA cables....for power stuff a cable is a cable (as long as it's copper stranded)....and a cheap 10$ princess auto inline fuse works just as well as the fancy inline fuses people get off charging 50+$ for

edit: found the site i used to buy all my wiring from:
http://www.knukonceptz.com/

exactly what Jeff said. I've learned the expensive way that you don't need to buy $100+ wiring kits.
I would buy those cheap polk audios for the rear as fillers and spend the bulk of the cash on components for the front.
Also you should buy this exact setup for sub/amp combo for the trunk:

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...801691345.html

the box is for 350 but it should fit...lol

OK. So let's assume I'm going to pick up some 6.5" component fronts for around $150. I now have $250 +/- left over for some combination of rears, amp and/or sub. Is Sub necessary?

I assume the HU should be able to run fronts/rears fine without an amp if there is no sub.

If I get a sub does that mean I have to get an amp too so consider them a package deal?

There are some cheap subs around my place.

no, most headunits will not power component speakers (unless things have changed in the last 5 years)....a deck puts out like 20 watts RMS...components need at least 50 wrms most of the time.....get a decent 50wrms x 2 amp to go with the components

I would definitely get a sub...just a 10" in a sealed box with a little amp...big subs that weight 1002045125 lbs and rattle the **** out of the car are stupid...but a sub is necessary for a good system as 6.5" speakers simply cannot produce the low frequencies required by almost all types of music (no subs are NOT only for people who listen to rap tunes)

you can look into a 4 channel amp and bridge the back two channels for the sub, power the rear speakers from the deck...but honestly its easier (and cheaper a lot of the time) just to get a 2 channel for the components and then either a monoblock for the sub, or another cheap 2 channel and bridge the channels.....

as for the two subs you linked, i wouldn't get either as they are in ported boxes....ported boxes give u more decibels, however u sacrifice some of the "clarity" or "tightness" (cant think of the right word right now).....just go with a sealed box...

for something cheap i would go with something like this:
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...791644128.html

in a box like this:

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rd...787652346.html

or even something like this:

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...767576286.html

neither are going to be pounding bass, but for under 100$, then you should be able to get an amp that works for 100$.....so 200$ is dirt cheap and u have a little bit of bass, and trust me, it makes a huge difference

Oh. See, I know nothing.

I believe my HU puts out 19W RMS with peak of 50W.

yeah...see take these speakers for example:

http://www.visions.ca/Catalogue/Cate...productId=6280

50W nominal power....19W isn't going to move those

so pair it up with a cheap amp like this:

http://www.visions.ca/Catalogue/Cate...productId=6159

60W rms x 2

actually thats not a bad little combo there for ~300$ after tax....

To clarify they are 22W RMS (50W x 4 Peak). That's a nice set-up plus I could add a sub as well I suppose.

Now we're getting somewhere.

Technically you dont have to amp the front component speakers. I have Infinity components in the front and Infinitys in the rear and they are running off just the deck and it sounds good, but yes amping them would sound better and you could crank them a lot louder.

Do you find your set up is a major improvement over stock?

I just bought my car and it came with the stock hu with infinity's all around and a 10"sub/amp as well. It sounds great!! I will eventually grab a 4 channel amp for the speakers and after market hu, but no time soon since im doing exterior upgrades at the moment.

You'll find a HUGE difference from simply changing the hu and 4 speakers.
and if you have money left over, get the sub/amp combo, you'll love the thump. And i too recommend the sealed box over the ported box. better thump IMO.

My recommendation... as money comes in

A) aftermarket HU
B) Aftermarket components (off HU initially)
c) Add Speaker amp (50-75w RMS per channel)
d) Add Sub+Sub amp (10" Sealed = Most flexible to sound good for all music types)
e) Sound Deadening.

And you may find you happy after c.

But yah but for 400$ i would get components and an amp for starters, and then see how that makes you feel about your sound.

I would get an amp and some components for the front first. Go with the JL Audio speakers. I had the Alpine Type R and Type S speakers and they have really cheaped out on the tweeters on thier new stuff.

And the amp goes under the front seats usually?

Would those 6.75" Pioneers fit in the WRX front doors?
