Power Steering Pump Problems....
So I have an 08 WRX and I had the nasty whine coming from the power steering pump whenever I would turn my wheel. I replaced the oring about a three weeks ago and the sound went away. This morning I fired her up to go to work and there the dang sound was again.... WTF! Do I need to replace the whole pump or is there anything else that I can do before spending around 600 for a replacement?

Tell you right now: I tried the rebuild, and it didn't work for mine. So that was the first swap. Then I bought a rebuilt from oreilly, no good and they sent me another, no good. The rebuilt units were sputtery for lack of better description. That makes 3 swaps. After that, I bought a new pump. In the end it wasn't worth all the time spent swapping the thing.

Check every connection from the reservoir to the pump, any microscopic leak will allow air in while the car is running and it will foam and make noise. Its less likely you will see the leak on the suction side because it is almost under vacuum when running and doesn't need to be large at all to let air in.

So that foam he's talking about will be present in the reservoir. Pop the top and look in after running it. Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC |

You might have to get someone to steer it back and forth while its cold outside, so you can catch the bubbles. They don't have to be large bubbles to weaken the steering.

I've read a lot of people claiming that their hose clamps were bad. It's an easy fix if that's the case. Change the clamps out. But if that isn't the issue and you've got no foam or bubbles in the reservoir (having someone turn the wheel back and forth while you watch) then your pump is bad. Pretty easy to diagnose. And again, save yourself the aggravation and get a new factory unit. Even though it's pretty expensive, It will surely outlast the car as they are good for at least 100k i'd say.
