Default Lost to my friends s2000?

Last night me and my friend did some test runs against each other. We would start in 2nd gear and punch it. everytime he would pull me. Is this possible. He has a 2002 s2k with CAI and im a stock 06 sti.

Here are a few critiques i have of what happened

1.starting in 2nd gear might have been a bad idea because everytime i would start at 2nd I was at 5500rpm. Im thinking now that was out of the powerband and that i should have started in 3rd.

2.His weight advantage

3.My shifting into 5th gear was bad. I couldnt shift into 5th from 4th. My shifts are not the fastest but their still not bad.

I just wanna hear peoples opinions because i defintley want to run him again while im stock. I pulled my friends 350z by 1 1/2 lengths from a roll and a highway run. So i know i should be able to beat the s2k.

Uhh, thats wrong. Or, at least that "shouldn't" happen with two equal drivers.

I raced my brother s2k with a test pipe against my stg2 wrx and proceeded to trounce him with and easy 2-3 cars.

But these are two different cars with two different drivers so i dont know.

Your friend is most likely position himself for good vtec onset...try to get him to start lower in the rev range is my .02.

you should race him again when you get an EM for your 06.

Found the problem. Start in first from a dead stop. This should add a good 4-6 car lengths.

More seriously, start in 3rd or at a lower speed. He's got a 500lb advantage, so get him more out of his power band and you more into yours.

2002 S2K
Horsepower (hp @ rpm): 240 @ 8300
Torque (lb.-ft @ rpm): 153 @ 7500

2006 STI
Horsepower (hp @ rpm): 300 @ 6000
Torque (lb.-ft @ rpm): 300 @ 4000

i dont suck at driving but im not the best either but still i pulled 1 1/2 car lengths on my friends 350z, im thinking i should have started in 3rd gear. The only other thing i can think of is maybe he has more mods then hes telling me. I dont know ill give it another shot. I have to do my 3k oil change today and then at nite ill run him again.

This may be a stupid question, but what kind of advantage would we have by starting in 2nd or 3rd gear?

Thanks.

From a dead stop, STI all the way...

But not to "burst" your collective bubbles but I've never lost to a stock sti from a roll. Now that my SC is installed, I'll crush a stock STI. The reason a lot of s2k's get beaten from a roll is the drivers are clueless and inexperienced and can't keep the car in its power band, which is over 6k rpm.

As a previous STI owner I'm amazed at the idiotic statements and assumptions you guys make about a car you've probably never even sat in let alone drive. And driving it for an hour will NOT give you an understanding of the cars capabilities. The STI is a pathetically easy car to drive fast, which is good for the majority of average drivers out there who will never learn how to drive the car to its full potential. Its makes them feel they are great drivers when they rate about average. The S2k on the other hand requires practice and dedication that most of its owners will never reach, though they'll swear they are experts.

I KNOW I'm not an expert, but I'm better than most. 80% of your S2k drivers out there should have just bought a miata because they'll never drive the s2k the correct way to get the performance out of it, and then you boneheads will all swear the s2k is slow and you can beat is sooo easily (ad sarcastic sneer here)

yea i wanna know if you guys think i should have started in 3rd instead of 2nd. I dont know the speed in 2nd gear but i know i was at 5500rpm which seems kind of out of the power band. Also should i shift at 6500rpms instead of taking it to 7k.

Shabib67,

Look at the specs I added in my previous post. At 5500, you have very little effective powerband left. Most of the people I've talked to that drag race their STi's shift right around 6000 for best performance. As long as you are near 4000 rpm when you punch it, it should be a good run.

You might want to try and race him again from not such a high rpm, however I can't believe an almost stock s2k cold beat a stock STI.
