Livermore
Hey everyone,
I will soo be interviewing for a job in a few weeks in Livermore, CA. Having grown up on the east coast, I know nothing about life in California and just wanted to get a feel for what things are like out there. If I went by what I see on TV over here, there's no electricity, the ground shakes all the time, and gas is going to cost like $18.00 a gallon this summer. OK, so whats it really like.

the best thing i love about california is the weather i love the weather here its sunny 3/4 of the year hardly rains and you have to love the sunsets they are the most beutiful things to watch from the oakland hills. the sun reflects of the low cloads making a orange purple sky with the golden gate bridge and the background of san frans big sky scrapers. These are the best things about california and also almost forgot there are the hottest women here. the worst things about california is $hit is expensive everything is expensive, traffic everywhere you go, compton and oakland(actually oakland isnt that bad b/c i live right next to it) other then that california is the place i would want to live but will probably end up leaving b/c it just costs to much to live here.

I live near Livermore (San Ramon) and it's great. There are plenty of twisty roads all around here.
Looks like you got the exagerated NEWS view of things. So here's the local review. 1. Earthquakes - True we get them, sometimes, but you only feel a good one every couple decades or so. 2. Gas - We're looking at about $2.50 to $3.00 for 87 octane this summer....right now it is going for $1.85 to $2.05. 3. Electricity - It's not so bad, looks like we will have rolling black outs when the temp goes up ( and all the old folks start turning on their aircons ) but they only last about 2-hours at a time and it's over for that area for a few days. Best thing about Cali is you have every type of enviroment to play in, from the ocean, to the mountains, the deserts to the main valley. Yes we got the traffic, and it sucks most of the time, but if you know how to bypass then it's not so bad, really. CHeers Eddy L. |

In Livermore, you got lot's of quiet neighborhhods. There's lots of shopping nearby at Stoneridge Mall. You got an Imax theatre across the freeway in Dublin. Livermore to me is just a bit bland... Good thing more "happenin" cities are nearby.
I live in Union City. That's about 40 mins from Livermore... -Gagan Bains |

I live in Pleasanton which is next to livermore. Pleasanton Livermore and dublin are all in a valley with mountains surounding us. Livemore is more "country" then pleasanton and dublin but it is gettin some new computer and buldings. They also have the big lab that has been used in some movies like "The Rock". Are you workin for the lab?

My interview is for an engineering job at Sandia Labs in Livermore. Will be very cool and Im really excited about it. I know things get exaggerated about California. I live in North Carolina and probably everyone in the country thinks we have Tobacco growing in everyones back yard and that we get like five hurricanes a year. North Carolina is beautiful as well, with mountains and a huge coast line, it will be hard to match it but I know living in the bay area will be a good substitute.
Sucks that it's so expensive, but I guess I'll have to deal with it. How much would it cost to rent or buy a house or a condo. What's the car insurance like, I have no tickets or wrecks and I drive a 2000 Legacy. Are the electricity bills really as high as I hear they are. |

If you plan to live in Livermore or the surrounding communities, you'll like it. It's relatively small, and it feels like it. At the same time, you don't have to go far to get to the major metropolitan areas of San Jose or San Francisco.

I live in Livermore, and it's really not bad at all. Someone mentioned twisty roads, and I can tell you, in and around Livermore, there are lots. Sandia Labs are in a good spot, too, not a lot of traffic in that area, and if you're in the newer location, lots of green grass around the building, too, very nice. I work for the police in Pleasanton, and I can tell you the crime rate is a little higher in Livermore, but they're mostly property crimes, nothing major. Livermore is growing and growing, and the Valley really is a great spot for all kinds of entertainment. As someone mentioned you've got the ocean, the snow in the mountains, San Francisco and Lake Tahoe all within a couple hours driving distance. Really a great place to live. Good luck!

Livermore, Pleasanton, San Ramon -- all very conservative towns. Not my cup of tea, but I grew up in San Francisco.
It is as expensive as you fear. Fortunately, the wages are higher, but don't expect to do much better. I got a 40% raise when I moved up from San Diego, and I'm really not much better off. Compared to Raleigh, I'd take the weather and lack of bugs anyday. |
