Default Volkswagen Tiguan R coming

Quote:
Volkswagen Tiguan R coming

Feann Torr

High-performance SUVs have typically been based on luxury models from the prestige brands, such as the Audi Q3, Q5 and Q7, the BMW X5 and X6, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC, GLE and GLS.

Indeed, in SUV-mad, performance-hungry Australia, some Audi S/RS, BMW M and Mercedes AMG fettled SUVs are among the most popular (and most profitable) variants of their respective model ranges — such as the SQ5, which is the most popular Q5 model.

Now Volkswagen looks set to embark on a hi-po SUV journey that could see several of the mainstream German brand’s SUV models beefed up with more performance.

Two models singled out for GTI or even R treatment are the new-generation Tiguan and upcoming T-Roc baby SUV set for Australian release by 2019.

Talking to motoring.com.au during this week’s launch of the Mk7.5 Golf GTI, Volkswagen Group Australia product marketing manager Jeff Shafer said VW’s SUV product portfolio will be expanded over the next few years and that high-performance models will play an important part in Australia.

“We think R GmbH is part of the Volkswagen DNA. Fun to drive is something we want to deliver to the people. If you look at customer surveys, VW has one of the highest ratings in terms of driving fun, and [some customers respond] “that’s why I bought a VW”.

“So I’d love to see Golf R spread to other models and I think that applies equally to passenger cars as well as SUVs,” he said.

Next year’s new Polo hatch appears likely to join Volkswagen’s hot R model range, which currently comprises the Golf and Scirocco, and sits one tier above GTI models like the Polo and Golf.

But apart from the discontinued Touareg R50, a beastly 257kW/850Nm V10 diesel-powered version of the outgoing Touareg, Volkswagen has never really been gung-ho with go-fast SUVs.

That looks set to change, however, with reports that a 200kW-plus Golf R-powered Tiguan is almost ready to rumble.

“I think it would be a formula that would work for us here. I would love to see it and I’m hoping the R&D guys can come up with something,” said Shafer.

The VW product planner was careful not to officially confirm the Tiguan R, but was clearly enthused by the idea and is pushing hard for it internally within VW.

“There’s no plans in place at the moment but it’s something that we always bring up with our German colleagues and let them know about the opportunities we see.

“We’ll be talking to them to see what they can deliver. Fingers crossed,” he added

Volkswagen already offers a Golf GTI-spec 162kW turbo-petrol version of the Tiguan that’s been very popular with customers and Shafer indicated its strong sales make the business case for a Tiguan R more viable.

“That engine’s basically straight out of a Golf GTI and the response to that has been very, very good. So that gives us a bit of leverage to go back and show it’s not just wishful thinking or a couple of enthusiast product planners who are saying this, but it’s the market responding to these combinations of performance engine with the SUV.”

At this stage it’s not clear whether Volkswagen’s first SUV R treatment will be applied to the new Tiguan, which will soon be joined by a seven-seat version dubbed Tiguan Allspace, or a third ‘coupe’ derivative that was previewed by the Tiguan GTE concept (pictured).

Volkswagen Australia has another ace up its SUV sleeve in the form of special-edition vehicles.

It’s already announced the Golf GTI Original and Golf R Grid Edition, which are unique to Australia, and it could tap the Tiguan and T-Roc for limited-edition high-performance variants in future.

Today VW announced the Tiguan Adventure model priced from $43,990, and go-fast special-editions would not only follow the Golf’s lead but bolster its top-selling SUV model in the face of a potential Golf sales slide like the one already happening in Europe, partly as a result of Tiguan substitution.

After the Tiguan R, the next high-performance SUV to come from the world’s biggest car-maker is likely to be the T-Roc R. Although the T-Roc is still yet to go on sale in Australia, its compact size, affordability and global popularity will make it an ideal candidate for an eye-catching, athletic flagship.

Similar in size to the Polo, the higher-riding T-Roc R could share its engine with the upcoming Polo GTI, which is expected to pack a 147kW 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

Shafer wouldn’t be drawn on whether there’s a T-Roc R in the pipeline but he was optimistic about its potential in the Australian market.

“I think that would be an awesome car and I’d be first in line to put my money down for that sort of concept. Both of those trends are very much part of the Australian market — the SUV but also that performance appeal.”

Default Volkswagen Polo R would be ‘interesting’

Quote:
Volkswagen Polo R would be ‘interesting’

Feann Torr

Imagine a hard-charging, completely bonkers all-wheel drive compact car that was relatively affordable. Sort of like a more accessible, Volkswagen version of the Audi S1 – a car that motoring.com.au almost named as Australia’s Best Driver’s Car 2015.

This Volkswagen would undoubtedly be the Volkswagen Polo R, a proposition that appears to be tickling the fancy of VW product planners.

“It would be an interesting one to consider,” Jeff Shafer, product marketing manager at Volkswagen Australia, told motoring.com.au when asked if there would be a potential market for a juiced-up, next-level version of the Polo GTI.

Due on sale here next March, the new-generation VW Polo is based on an all-new compact version of the company’s MQB platform, dubbed AO, and it’ll make the new car lighter and more rigid — a perfect base for 170kW-ish berserk Polo.

Volkswagen’s current 141kW Polo GTI is a $27,690 proposition in Australia, and has been a strong-selling compact hot hatch for the brand. The next-generation Polo GTI is due in Australia in the middle of 2018 and is tipped to ditch the current model’s 1.8-litre four-pot turbo for a beefier 147kW 2.0-litre engine.

“The Polo GTI has been a very strong performer for us and it has done well from both a sales and reputation standpoint. It’s won a few bang-for-your-bucks comparisons and the new generation is something were really looking forward to,” said Shafer.

“The early reports internally is that the [new Polo GTI’s] fun-to-drive factor has been really dialled up and the first step for us is to launch the Polo GTI in the middle of 2018.”

Shafer wouldn’t confirm the existence of a hard-core Polo R model for the first time, but he refused to deny its existence either.

“Beyond that [Polo GTI] I’d certainly be interested in anything VGA is planning, performance-wise, but we just have to wait and see.”

Pricing for a VW Polo R could be expected to reach the low-to-mid $40K range in Australia, particularly if the car comes with AWD.

But with customer demand for high-performance models in Australia continuing to be significant (the Golf GTI and Golf R account for around 25 per cent of all Golf sales here), there appears to be plenty of room for more R models in the VW range.

Fingers crossed it gets the nod from VW’s Wolfsburg HQ, because apart from having no direct rival and trumping the Abarth 595, Ford Fiesta ST, Peugeot 208 GTi and Renault Clio RS, we reckon it would be an absolute giant-slayer.

Tiguan R would be interesting. T-roc R would be even cooler. I still am amazed that's not coming to the us in standard form... Would be a good crosstrek competitor. I understand no Polo.

The wife emphatically mirrors the surveys. She loves her MK7 GTI. And why wouldn't she? 30 mpg, handles great, feels great, rides great, great seats, great brakes, great engine, great trans, vault silent, fits 4 people and gear on road trips, doesn't burn a drop of oil, phone interface has been oddly perfect. Even did awesome in our sketchy snowstorms this year on stock all seasons. I dunno if there is anything that can check so many boxes for so little money AND be a hoot to romp on in the twisties. The Corolla it replaced had its goods and bads, but a peanuts more expensive GTI it was not. Not even close. Especially for equal reliability over the same stretch of time without giving up much in fuel economy.

She is having a tough time wanting to buy a more expensive car. If VW offers a GTI Sportwagen with 4Motion, I'd retire my LGT wagon in a heartbeat and fill out those surveys the same way.

I'd go for this for sure! I LOVE my R, but looking at a Macan for my next vehicle....down the road. I'd definitely consider this given the specs are comparable.

Hot Volkswagen Tiguan R tests with Audi-derived five-cylinder engine

Detuned 2.5-litre unit from the TT RS and RS3 will make its way into VW’s hot SUV as the brand expands the R badge

The Volkswagen Tiguan will gain an R-badged hot model, which has been spotted testing at the Nürburgring with a five-cylinder engine.

Although VW remains tight-lipped on the details, VW boss Herbert Diess previously revealed to Autocar that there is room in the R brand for expansion, with the first model most likely to be an SUV. Diess said that the Tiguan and other SUVs would not get GTI-badged cars, as the GTI brand will only be expanded as far as the new Up GTI.

The GTE brand is also has room for growth, said Diess, so a Tiguan GTE, as well as a T-Roc GTE are on the horizon.

The Tiguan R will sit above the current range-topper, a 240bhp 2.0-litre petrol BiTDi capable of 0-62mph in 6.5sec. It’s likely that the Tiguan R will reach 62mph closer to 5.0sec.

Outwardly, the Tiguan R looks very similar to the range-topping R-Line trim of the cooking Tiguan, although the R’s price could edge closer to £46,000, matching the price difference between the highest-spec Golf diesel and Golf R range-topper.

Unlike the Golf R’s quad-tailpipe set-up, the Tiguan R development car bore two large rear exhausts, although this could change for production to match its hot hatchback sibling. The car has previously sported intersecting quad exhausts, akin to those on the 996 Porsche 911 Turbo.

Unlike the Audi RS3 and TT RS in which the 2.5-litre, five-cylinder unit is already used, the Tiguan R’s engine will not have 395bhp. Output is likely to be in excess of the Seat Ateca Cupra’s 300bhp to be similar to the Golf R’s 306bhp. The registration plates from both Volkswagen's native Wolfsburg and Audi's Ingolstadt hometown further suggests collaboration between the two on development of the car.

A debut at the Geneva motor show is most likely, given the T-Roc’s first public outing will be at the Frankfurt motor show in a few weeks' time.

Seems like a waste with only 300hp gunna be in the same ballpark as an x3 35i and v6 sorento.
340-360hp would really set it apart and undercut bmw and amg at the same time.

Default 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan facelift to bring hot R version

Quote:
2020 Volkswagen Tiguan facelift to bring hot R version
New spy images show what appears to be an R performance variant of the Volkswagen Tiguan, nearly a year since prototypes were last spotted.

While initially appearing to be an example of the high-end Tiguan R-Line, tell-tale signs that this is something more special include a visible intercooler behind the lower air intake, larger brakes and, most notably, the same quad tailpipes as the Golf R hatchback.

A subtly reworked front end and other styling tweaks compared with previous Tiguan R prototypes indicate that it will likely make its official debut when the standard Tiguan is facelifted later this year. The Tiguan will be the third model in Volkswagen's range to receive the R treatment, sitting above the newly launched T-Roc R and below the forthcoming plug-in hybrid Touareg R.

Speaking to Autocar recently, R division boss Jost Capito spoke candidly about the idea of a Tiguan R. “I can see a place for a Tiguan R,” he said. “We’ve seen the good things that can be achieved with the T-Roc, but the Tiguan would be a different kind of car. It would have to be more of an everyday model, like the Touareg.”

The first time a performance-enhanced Tiguan mule was seen testing was in 2017, when snappers caught a prototype featuring a five-cylinder turbocharged engine likely sourced from the Audi RS Q3.

It's thought that a hot Tiguan was delayed for two significant reasons. First, the model was shuffled down the priority order while the Volkswagen Group rushed to homologate its cars under the new WLTP testing regime. Second, the launch of Cupra as a brand in its own right meant a hot Seat Ateca was pushed to the front of the development queue.

The Tiguan R is expected to now feature the same 296bhp EA888 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit as found in a number of Volkswagen Group performance models, including the Cupra Ateca and Golf R. Mated to four-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, it should mean a 0-62mph time of around 5.0sec. Chassis upgrades will feature, too.

No confirmation of a launch date has been communicated yet. However, the sighting of these prototypes adds weight to earlier rumours that a Tiguan R would launch before the year is out.

At the unveiling of the smaller T-Roc R, Capito said that his task is to make the sub-brand “to Volkswagen what M is for BMW”. He went on to

It's a good time to bring the hot version of the Tiguan. Current R-Line is such a disappointment looking all flashy with no performance.

That front bumper has similar white vinyl treatment as the Golf R did... if you look past that, the front bumper looks eerily similar to the Golf R's bumper.

Would be a great trim option, but I foresee price being pretty high.

Default 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan R Review

Volkswagen Tiguan R 2020 review

From £22,3558

Performance division lights a 316bhp fire in the belly of brand’s best-selling SUV

Quote:
What is it?
It’s an obvious move – one we’ve often discussed here at Autocar. But for various reasons it has taken Volkswagen close to 13 years to bring the R name and the performance-enhancing modifications for which it is now quite well renowned to the Tiguan line-up.

There have been various R styling lines for the Tiguan down through the years, of course. But with a further developed version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine used by the Golf R and more recently introduced T-Roc R, the new Tiguan R is easily the most powerful and the fastest variant of Volkswagen’s best-selling SUV yet.

Power peaks at 316bhp, with torque building to 310lb ft on a range of revs between 1200rpm and 5200rpm. To put this in perspective, the next most powerful petrol model in the facelifted Tiguan line-up develops a more modest 148bhp and 184lb ft.

Drive is sent through a standard seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with both manual and automatic shift modes and a newly developed version of Volkswagen’s 4Motion four-wheel drive system featuring a torque-vectoring function on the rear axle, which allows it to individually alter the amount of drive sent to each rear wheel.

Visual differentiation from the rest of the second-generation Tiguan line-up comes via a uniquely styled front bumper and other exterior elements featuring design cues similar to those seen on different R models, including standard 19in wheels.

Subtle changes brought to all new facelifted Tiguan models include a more advanced version of VW's MEB infotainment system, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and live traffic data, multi-coloured ambient lighting and a touch-sensitive digital control module for the climate functions along with a number of typical R equipment upgrades.

There are R-specific digital instruments that change colour depending on the drive mode, sport seats and a multi-function steering wheel with haptic feedback controls – including an R button that allows you switch directly into Race mode – together with stainless-steel pedal caps and unique dashboard trims. Apart from some hard plastic panels below your usual line of sight, it’s a pleasingly functional and quality driving environment.

What's it like?
The Tiguan R is very straightforward to drive, with a broad set of characteristics depending on the chosen drive mode: Comfort, Sport or Race.

The engine, with its inherent smoothness and impressive flexibility, is at the very root of the dynamic appeal, delivering relaxed part throttle and truly urgent qualities under load. There’s great linearity to the way the transversely mounted unit revs, and the gearbox delivers lightning-fast shifts in any of the two more performance-oriented driving modes.

It never feels quite as determined as the lower-riding Golf R Estate, owing in part to its rather hefty 1746kg kerb weight. But the claimed 0-62mph time is 4.9sec, while not class-leading, gives it a good turn of speed when you go looking for it on deserted back roads.

The exhaust note, which is enhanced with a sound generator within the cabin, is engagingly raspy in Comfort mode. However, it is a bit overdone in race mode, where it crackles loudly on every lift of the throttle.

The reworked 4Motion four-wheel drive system provides outstanding traction and grip. The new torque vectoring function is able to send up to 100% of available to torque to the outside wheel during all-out cornering, instead of the 50% seen in other, less powerful Tiguan models. The result is a level of balance and cornering poise well beyond that of the standard car.

There’s outstanding accuracy to the variable-ratio steering and, with reduced ride height together with firmer springs and dampers, admirable body control. By compact performance SUV standards, the handling is quite fluid, if a little lacking in outright feedback.

It’s the ride that really stands out, though. The adaptive dampers provide the suspension with great control and the ability to deliver acceptably compliant properties in Comfort mode and significantly more sporting characteristics in either Sport or Race modes, even on the optional 21in wheels fitted to our test car.

While it’s unlikely you’re ever going to head away from the bitumen with such a wheel and tyre combination, Off-road, Snow and Off-road Expert driving modes are also available.

Should I buy one?
We’re still waiting to hear how Volkswagen will price the Tiguan R in the UK. However, if the pricing of the outgoing 2.0 TSI, which it indirectly replaces in the Tiguan line-up, is any guide, it’s going to be a £40,000-plus proposition in the UK.

It enters a highly competitive class but, on the evidence of this first drive, the Tiguan R will provide stiff competition to the likes of the Audi SQ2, BMW X2 M35i and Cupra Ateca.

Just makes you wonder why it took Volkswagen so long.

why would it? Not everybody wants limited range and long charge times. The notion people everywhere are clamoring to pay so much for something that is no better is strange. But you do you.

yeah, the id line won't make these things "irrelevant". But VW will increasingly have overlapping vehicle lines as they come out with more ID models.

doubt it'll come here.
