Yeah I too would love to know how much those other hot hatches outsell the WRX globally, not just the US. You say you could care less about Europe (and hence other markets). No offence, but that's small minded thinking. If the car only sells ok in one country (even if the US is the biggest market for them), then it won't survive. It needs to sell well in all markets otherwise Subie will lose coin because they won't do all this R&D to only just concentrate on the US.

You don't think Subie needs to win customers from the other hot hatches? What? Subaru shouldn't go mainstream and make the next WRX lame and civil, but on the other hand it can't go more niche than it is, otherwise it won't survive. Fact.

Source?

Subaru has posted sales gains the past 5 years. Sales records the past 4. The WRX/STI is selling as fast as they are being built. Their stock has increased over 100% in the last year. 300% over the past 10.

They sell several models overseas that they do not sell here(by FAR their largest market), yet those models survive.

Of course Subaru is going to try and improve the next car, but whatever they give us is going to sell as good or better than the current one.

Oh, and I did try and search sales of the Focus ST. What I found before I got bored with it said(in January) that it had gone on sale Aug 21st and had sold only 750. That is less than WRX/STI in one month. The only thing I didn't see a source list, so I would still like to see an "official" number; because SURELY a Ford would sell better than a Subaru.

No need to get heated buddy. I thought this forum allowed for constructive discussion. I'm just in the market for a performance sedan/hatch with some practicality. The WRX is just one of many I'm looking at. I've owned an STI before, and if Subie makes a better WRX I'll be buying it because the ST and GTI are not aggressive enough for me.

In saying this, its a moot point arguing the "record sales, growth etc". If you start with nothing, then anything looks like growth. If they started in 2002 buy selling 100 units, and they now sell 10,000, then yes mathematically that's huge growth.

You think the next WRX will sell better than the current one but that's no guarantee. Let's see how we go. Subie have stuffed up before.

Ok, I read through the past 15 pages or so, and i'm confused.

Will the 2014 WRX be revealed at the NYIAS? Will any WRX be revealed there?

I don't care much about the body, I prefer a Sedan and the Current WRX looks fine to me, I just want that 2.0 DIT!

Seems weird that they would test a "rumored" 2.0 DIT in an Imprezza Mule for the last year if they weren't interested in putting it in something that size / style this year.

The new WRX won't be released until 2014 as a 2015 model year.

There's no reason why Subaru can't introduce the 2.0 DIT with the upcoming the MY2014 WRX, instead of waiting for the completely redesigned MY2015. Maybe the New York Auto Show next month will have a surprising WRX to display.

Yes there is, its major investment to change/modify the assembly line if new engine goes in. Why do all this work one-two years ahead of new model? Car is selling very well as is. Terrible business idea.

The short story. The WRX/STI are STILL selling big numbers even though "everyone" says it is old and sucks compared to other offerings(even though it has gotten better over the years). The new one will be better and sell better. Minus the LGT being manual only, Subaru hasn't "stuffed up" in a while, and that wasn't a screw up in the car, just how they decided to sell it(JDM had auto).

Engines are assembled on their own lines. The only possible product now for 2.5L turbo engines would be the WRX/STI (Legacy and Forester have already converted to the 2.0 DIT) . The WRX/STI is a low volume car line. It's far cheaper to make only one turbo engine type, the 2.0 DIT. It's likely the only structural change necessary for the current WRX/STI to accommodate the 2.0 DIT is a new cross-member for the chassis (the existing hood scoop could still be used for the intercooler). The "mules" have demonstrated the new engine "fits" fine in the current body.

Edit: Forgot to point out that the Legacy 2.0 DIT in Japan (which has a hood scoop) did not require a full model change (FMC), or even a facelift, to accommodate the new 2.0 DIT engine.

Also, there have been hints of some sort of WRX hype being shown in NY at the end of the month as well. But this could be nothing.

Which means that, for crazy people like me, a swap is possible for the 4th Gen Impreza. I'm waiting to see what the new WRX design brings. If it's still available as a 4 door Sedan or 5 Door hatch, I'll probably get one and replace my '12 Impreza 2.0i. However, if they go the Coupe route or even a 3 Door hatch, practicality-wise I'll still want the storage of my Impreza. Dropping the 2.0 DIT in my Impreza, while expensive, would be better for me. Or I could just own 'em both... but that'd put quite the dent in my finances!

I think I'm going to put a deposit on a WRX special edition, and not do anything about it until after the auto show. lol

If you can get one, more power to ya. From what I've seen, the few that were allocated to Midwest dealers are all spoken for. It's "Option Code 11" if you can find 'em.

Don't waste your money, just get a Limited. Or wait for a 2015 next year.

There's a WRX Special Edition sedan available in Seattle, with no markup over MSRP. I realize it's across the country, but the cars are due in May and that would make a pretty fun break-in trip. PM me for more info if you're interested.

I would think that a special edition would hold it's value better than a regular limited no?

No, they are Subaru's and will inherently hold their value. An STI will hold its value better than a WRX. The 'rarity' of the limited means nothing in resale as you will have to find somebody who wants that weird shade of orange. So that is a subset of an already small set. Just get the STI and be far happier
