overboosting concerns?
Hey fellas need some info first time wrx buyer and having alot of problems so far.
Car currently has cobb bov spt exhaust invidia down pipe (catted with bracket to conform exhaust) cobb intake and box turbo heat shield and cobb ap running acn91 stage 2 sf (super low waste gate) im change map after map and im still overboosting i do the live data log and i overboost in 4th gear and 19.1 pounds and stay overboosting in 5th gear around 18.5 to 19.5 the whole time i have all the parts that the guys have recommended and i know of people who have the exact same parts and running the ap map and not even close to overboosting the only difference is my bov (to my knowledge its installed correctly ) is it possible that just my bov is causing all these issues

I have a 2011 with Invidia Q300 catless dp, stock BOV , stock airbox. When I used the AP OTS maps and a COBB CIA I was getting boost creep in colder temps. I changed back to stock airbox and immediately dropped 1.5 to 2 psi. I had an e-tune done and the car no longer gets boost creep and runs great (plus its a little quieter). The combination of CIA and catless DP is a known problem combination. You might try just going back to the stk air box and a Stage II tune to see if that takes care of it. By the way if you running the Cobb stage II + map and std WG settings you should be right around 19psi. If you're getting an initial spike of 19.5 psi but it falls back to 18.5 - 19 psi you should be ok. The friends of mine that ran the Cobb BOV found that it had a tendency to have driveability issues and other than making noise did nothing for the performance...FYI. |

let me guess, you're doing low RPM full throttle pulls arent you?
overboosting is extremely common in that scenario, and something you should AVOID as it is not good for the motor. |

You need to take a WOT datalog to know what is going on. Select the default AP datalog parameters and include TD Boost Error if it is not already selected.

I think he's trying to advise avoiding wide open throttle when you're at ~2k rpm's and less, which is good advice. Only go WOT, which you'll need to to pull good data, when you already above 2k rpm...and can safely go WOT.
edit, post your log data in the AP forum too to get better visibility for the data. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=140 |

So I had bought the grimspeed uppipe to finally fix my overboosting after all the research the Grimm seemed to be the best one but is there any downsides to this purchase ?

On the the thread on overboosting it clearly gets into detail about how the upgraded uppipe controls the airflow reducing boost creep is that wrong ?

What most do is get the up-pipe WITH a flange for an EWG. The reason for boost creep is because the turbo cannot flow enough gases though the WG to control boost, thus experiencing boost creep. With an up-pipe and EWG, you flow more air through the WG to control boost, thus eliminating boost creep.

No, probably not. You can either port your stock wastegate, or get an EWG.

On the WRX, you should be doing your pulls in 3rd gear ... not 4th or 5th. I included a link to Cobbs datalogging video, check it out and log it again properly using the severe low wastegate map and see where your at.
If your still having issues, call Cobb and run your questions by them. They are pretty good about helping people out with issues on their OTS tunes. |

Have you done a log in 3rd gear? Boost can flucuate, just because you are 1-2 psi over once in 5th doesn't mean it's an issue. It honestly read like you've read too far into this and don't have, or know if you have a true problem at this point.
Best way to know, find a local tuner. |

I'm on my phone, and not looking at Cobb's specs, but I'm going to guess your target boost is 17 or 17.5 (+/- 1psi). At 19, you are only 1 psi overboosting, but that may very well be due to improper logging. |

Just surprised you bought a stage 2 car as your first Wrx
I strongly believe one of 2 things..... Your tune is not adjusted appropriately for the parts OR your unnecessary bov/intake combo are causing issues Since you are new to Wrx, I'm assuming you are new to the Subaru community. Many of the guys on here do not run intake OR bov , for the reasons that you have described |

Believe me if I wasn't so deep Into parts is I would of stayed stock. I removed the bov already the intake stayed on if I solve all my problems with an ewg uppipe and them getting a pro tune that's all I have left

I'm confused. You removed one of the two parts that people are telling you could fix your issue and instead of removing the intake as well, you decide your only option it to add an EWG? Why aren't you trying the stock air box instead of throwing more mods at it?
