Default Let's talk about the rear tranny mount bushings

I want stiffer bushings to remove some of the clunk, not so much for the clunk itself but because the clunk makes smooth shifts (and downshifts) harder under higher load. I'm referring to these bushints marked "bolts" in ths pic (thanks TIC)

I'm guessing that Subaru put in the rubber bushings with the voids to accomplish two major things:
- reduce NVH for the consumer passenger vehicle (as opposed to performance)
- protect the rear diff and transmission during hard shifts, etc.

I've read that people put in urethane bushings in these spots and that gets rid of "the clunk" and they say, "with minimal NVH increase".

Does my theory that Subaru is "protecting" the tranny/reardiff with the softer bushing seem correct?

(I'm just hoping to start a discussion on this subject)

I believe it ONLY has to do with NVH and nothing to do with making it easier on the diff. I'm not sure if I'm remembering my placement rightly, but I had the rear diff noise TSB done on my car and they added similar bushings to the rear diff carrier to reduce the resonance of some WRXs (04s mostly) at 60-64 MPH. So if bushings on the rear diff solved it, bushing = NVH purposes in my crazy mind.

I really don't think so since the R180 is 100% different than the R160. Plus if you did find just the bushings (other than the link you posted which is the bushings/brace) it would be a real PITA to swap them out. Your options are limited to TiC and I believe Beatrush/Laile makes one as well. Check my Suspension FAQ as I have all of them listed unless it's a new part that JUST came out.

chimchim, you can get these bushings from TiC. Their Race hardness ones are supposed to be pretty intense performance wise with some NVH. I'm driving on their Comfort hardness ones. HUGE improvement in the drivetrain, much easier to make fast, precise, lurch-free shifts. Also makes it easier to drive in stop-and-go traffic. Overall, no increase on NVH other than the drivetrain barks for a moment when the tension reverses direction if you're at WOT and bail to throttle closed.

There are a few variants of these on the market.

- Ours
- STi - replaces the entire dogbone
- Superpro - one piece, press needed to install
- Someone else - sorry, can't remember who right now

TIC is definitely a very close second; but I just can't resist the beauty of a GroupN bushing... GroupN is to my WRX what Mugen was to my old Honda.
