Default Ski Freaks: I'm looking at the Volkl AC2's. How are the Motion LT Bindings?

This will be my first pair of skis I'll own and I like everything I've read about the AC2's. But should I look at upgrading the Motion LT bindings or will they get the job done? I would like to spend <$1000 for boots, bindings and skiis.

I think for your first pair of skis, you should buy low. You might hate skiiing. Or you might bust a leg. Then you have a $1000 underwear and t-shirt hanger.

volkl makes decent skis, but I hate skis with included bindings....
they are owned by K2 fyi.
I'd love a pair of gotomas or karmas personally.

edit: how much do you weight and how good are you? You don't want to be too close to the top end of your DIN. Reading their site, the LTs only go to 10.... so if you're good/heavy they won't work, but if you're lighter (<180lbs) or an intermediate you'll be fine...

I wouldn't be buying skis if this was my first time skiiing. Plus when I've been spending $30 ten times over in a season to rent 10 year old dynastars, it doesnt really make sense financially.

also DO NOT BUY SOME RANDOM BOOTS THROWN INTO A PACKAGE..... Make sure with boots you try EVERYTHING on you can, and buy what's comfortable from day 1. Also make sure where you buy your boots has a good boot fitter and some sort of fit garantee. Boot fit is the most important thing.

Brand name means nothing. Every manufacturer makes good boots, but they all use different lasts... Make sure you find the one closest to your feet.

Considering that March is a few days away, why not just wait a month or two and catch the sales?

That's really tempting. Let me look into places to stay up there. What's the deadline for getting that lift ticket deal?

Avoid buying a "system" ski at all costs. Additionally, you cannot upgrade motion bindings AFAIK, you get what comes with the ski.

Some people love marker bindings. I think they are total ****.

Binding Companies in the order I like them:
1. Salomon (only bindings I will willfully use, but a 912 series binding... they just changed the name. Ben knows the new one)
2. Look (make sure to get a pivet model)
3. Marker
Under no circumstances buy anything at this point of the list or below
4. Tyrolia
5. Atomic
666. Line (seriously, worst ski product of all time. Terribly unsafe, heavy and unreliable. plus their durability is crap).

Keep in mind this is my subjective opinion. However it IS based upon years of skiing, years of selling skis, and years of being a ski tech, so it's not coming out of complete left field.

Damn you. I was looking at Volkl's based on your past posts! But I'm sure you were referring to their upper echelon product lines.

Would you give me some info on an decent all-mountain ski that I won't grow out of in the next year with replaceable bindings?

Seconded. Buy the best, most comfortable boots you can afford and maybe think about spending a season demo'ing a few different skis. FWIW, I have Volkls and upgraded to a Marker binding. Been nothing but happy with 'em.

Volkl makes great skis! They just package themselves with Markers It's not like they make a BAD product (like #4-666 on the list), but I just really feel Salomon and Look make superior bindings. This is a bit like saying "the evo is a great car, but I really think the STi is a better product". By the numbers it's very close, but it comes down to subjectivity. However, unlike cars which are all internal combustion powered, all three binding companies use different approaches to accomplishing their goals (performance and safety).

Does Volkl sell the AC2s without bindings? I know they used to sell most of their skis both with and without a system.

As Ben said, first and formost is boots anyway. Buy awesome boots. Any by awesome, I mean fit. Any higher intermediate or better boot (flex rating of 75/80+ if they still use that measurement) should last you years upon years even if you improve greatly.

Dynastar makes some really light and snappy mid-level all-mountain skis that come without bindings, but they tend to be pricey. I'd search (maybe even email the company) for The AC2s without the system.

At the end of the day, you can do a lot of worse things than buying a system ski, but it's far from the best purchase you can make. It's akin to buying tires from the dealership IMO.

And just because it really is that important I'll second adrock.

Blow your budget on boots (if you need to) and hold off until next year for skis.

I don't think they are, but their free ride system is... IE Karma's gotamas etc... They are arguably better skies anyway... They weight less and are twin tipped. They also cost less (even once you add the bindings of your choice). I like volkls too, and they make some awesome groomer all mtn skis that aren't the twin tipped free ride skis I like, but they come with the binding system, which as grant says it a HUGE turn off.... The only good thing about them is you can reset them so your friends boots will fit, and that's really not a good thing

As grant said, salamon makes some great bindings. I have 2 pairs of 912 Tis (very light) and they just came out with Z12 Tis and Z14 labs. T Those last digits are the highest the DIN goes. IE 912s go to 12, thw 14s go to 14... This is important because you don't want to be at more than 80% of a bindings rating... IE I ski with my heel DINs at 10, so I "need" bindings that go to at least 12... If I go the next rung down on their product line the highest the binding goes is 10 so I'd have it maxed out all the time.... But I weight 212, an 6'4 and a level III (on that gay ass form, it puts me at a 8 DIN)....

My powder skis have world cup springs though, they go to 16...

Yes, they're called sponsored athletes...
for someone buying their first pair of skis, you'll never know the difference. I can tell the difference, and I only ski on salomons. I'd try looks/rossignols if they were very cheap, but I've skied on salomons my whole life and see no reason to change now... And they work perfectly for me. Never had one come off when it shouldn't and never had one not come off when it should....

IMHO
my $.02
YMMV

Volkl Karmas. See also those K2 PEs (public enemies) I posted earlier today for $207.31 at steepandcheap.... (sold out within a half hour) K2 owns Volkl and their skis are almost identical this year, especially their freeride skis....

We need to have enough interest by Wednesday to know for sure it will work out, but I am 95***37; sure now because I'm doing her a favor Sunday by taking a bus.... So you'd need to call it in by Friday at 4pm... It's $35 for either day single ticket, or $56 for both days...

DDDDOOOOOOO EEEEEEETTTTTTTT!!!!!!

Also looking at those AC2s, they are pretty skinny under foot...
AC2s
116-72-103 18.75mm sidecut
Karmas:
119-87-111 14.00mm sidecut

the karmas have less sidecut, but still more than enough. They also have a much wider platform. They are much more of an all mtn ski, where as the AC2s are much more of a groomer ski. Nothing wrong with either one, but if I was buying one pair of skis by type, they would have to be all mtns, not groomer skis...

Of course I'm one of the few people who looks at this and wants them:
Fat-ypus A-Lotta:
Length: 180cm
Dimensions: 172/140/158

my quiver:
K2 AK Enemies 188cm 118-90-108 11.5mm sidecut
Rossignol Scratch FS 180cm 110-80-103 13.75mm sidecut
K2 PEs 179cm 113-80-104 14.25mm sidecut
you can tell they're all older because the pow skis are only 90mm underfoot and the park/all mountain skis are both only 80mm underfoot. When I got them they were all considered very fat at the time.... Oh how things change. How long until we're on 2 snowboards strapped 2 our feet? oh, wait a minute..... see above....
