The fact that I can put my Pioneer DEH-80PRS in application mode and connect virtually any i-Device to it really has me thinking of sticking an iPad mini in front of it.
Feel the same way...every DD head unit I've played with in Navigation mode has been so slow to think stuff up.

Being able to use a HU to play the audio and a iPad or other tablet to do the thinking seems like a huge plus in my book.

The idea I'm working with is to gorilla glue some neodymium magnets to the back side of the left and right of the factory bezel. Get an iPad mini cover from eBay and gorilla glue some more magnets. Cover with a soft durable material and bam instant removable tablet.

Idea came from me working in a lab and wanting to take my tablet with me for music but not wanting it to be in the way. So with the magnets I can slap it the my work bench or vented hood and it's good to go.

Well the guys that I linked a video to in my first post did an install of the iPad mini in an STI. They are definitely helping my get a better idea on how to build something as I've never worked with fiberglass or body filler. Still not a big fan of how it sticks out on top though.

Does anyone here own that STI?!

Starts at 40s and then again at 7m30s

With the height (mounted sideways) you probably are not going to be able to keep it below the top unless you modify the vents.

How tall is the Mini and then how much space is there from the top of the vents to the top of the bezel?

I plan on modifying the vents, just got a spare to mess with.
The mini is 5.3in
The top of the vents to the top of the bezel is ~4in
Need to trim down the vents ~1.3in
The new opening of the vents will be ~1.5in

Here is a very rough mockup. I took out the top three front fins on the right side vent and lowered the direction control thingy down one fin.

so your doing the magnets? and when you pull the ipad mini off thats where the head unit will be mounted, inset for the ipad to lay over top of it?

are you just going to bluetooth everything?

are you going to have way to charge the ipad whiles its in dash?

are you figuring a way out to still be able to use the steering wheel controls?

/\ Good questions. Does your Ipad have GPS capability? If not there is a product Dual Electronics makes that enables it. Also, have you thought about where your going to route you ipod cable?

Yep, going to try the magnet method. You got it exactly!

The iPad mini's audio will be connected via bluetooth rather than the lightning cord as some head units have issues with it. But, I'm most likely going to still have the lighting cable plugged it but wire it to the car so the iPad mini only receives power.

The steering wheel controls will remain via the Axxess ASWC module.

The iPad falling out is a concern I do have. I got the magnets in they are fairly strong. I also created a mock up with some thin card board to see how well the iPad held on. The magnets are only at the top, so I may create a small lip on the bottom so that part doesn't fall out.

Yes, I have the iPad mini with the data plan so it had GPS.

i have researched the wifi only ipads using a mobile hotspot and driving around using the navigation app...

basic answer is it wont work that way.

ways it will work, if you have an cellular enabled ipad and pay for the data service like through verizon or att. That works perfect

or if you already have or buy a cellular enabled ipad WITHOUT the data service activated. Then have a mobile hotspot, then the navigation apps will work.

The wifi only ipads dont have the GPS chip/antenna in them.

you can get a external GPS modular, a wifi only ipad, and a mobile hotspot and that will work.

so after all the different scenarios and some math...

I'm gonna get an ipad mini.

so it would be more cost effective to purchase a new ipad mini with 4g service and add it to my current verizon plan.

but say you already have a ipad or ipad mini wifi only.. it prob be cheaper to buy the external GPS modular and get a mobile hotspot

the mobile hotspots are fairly cheap unit and 20 bucks a month add on to existing plan (verizon)

vs buying a 16 gig ipad mini 4G LTE is lots of monies, but its only 10 bucks a month to add to existing plan (verizon)

so xmas gift to my self = ipad mini

Reminder: the iPad mini uses the lightning adapter, and there's no guarantee that the GPS modules for the last gen connectors will even work.

Quick question (probably a retarded one, I am not an electronics guru)

So if I want to rig up something similar would I be able to just hook the iPad Mini to an AUX cable to my double din receiver and then plug the power cord from the iPad Mini to the USB of the receiver to charge it while it's in use?
I ask because whenever I plug my iPhone into my USB to listen to music it takes over the screen and says "Accessory Connected" so I am assuming if I plug an iPad into the USB it will do the same thing so it would be pointless in even having it. So I need to find a way to get around this so I can still use the iPad as the functioning screen (so I don't have to buy a new deck too). Any tips or advice?

Thanks, Chris

Some head units have an "app mode" that allows you to have control of your device while it's connected to your radio.

Got all my supplies ready. Now, just need to find time to make it...

Having never worked with fiberglass or body filler I'm going to make a "test" tray to see how things go before I actually start the final build. I can also use that test to see how things are going to fit within the car, the radio bezel, and see where/how I need to mount the stereo.

gunz4me had an explanation I agree with.

I wont be losing the "stereo" completely as it will be behind the iPad. The iPad will act like the user interface to the radio and how I control audio and navigation.

Why I like the iPad mini over a double din touch screen:
  • Better UI and screen, also larger screen
  • Maps will always be up to date and free (most cases will be free)
  • Navigation apps will be constantly updated and get better
  • Cost the same or less than a high quality double din touch screen
  • The iPad is removable so I can use it for multiple purposes as I can use it anywhere.
  • Have your music collection and internet radio (I know you could use your phone or other media player.)
  • And last, it's just plan cool. At least to me it is.

This is indeed a very cool idea but I dont understand why an Ipad requires an internet connection to use navigation. Is the GPS that week that it is not reliable without web assistance? My Toshiba Thrive links up and navigates just fine on the open road with no hotspot

As a side note, some DD headunit Navis are not so bad such as the Pioneer AVIC units, especially after a little assistance (AVIC 411), and some even include features not available on google maps such as 3d rendering of buildings and a useful POI display (with logos).

Good luck with your mod I hope all goes well!

but doesnt the physical ipad unit change in a couple of years time after its been release? i have seen those big ones installed in some wrx and sti's and now they are considered outdated. plus they are huge with lots of time and money in the bezel. new bezel and redo it with the ipad mini?
