Default thoughts on HKS turbo kit

just checked out the HKS website to see they finally made official their turbo kit for the 02 on wrx. i got this from the website

HKS is proud to introduce our all new off road use only GT Sport Turbo Upgrade for the 2002+ Subaru Impreza WRX. This turbo upgrade combines a GT2540R ball-bearing turbo, Up-pipe, straight through Downpipe, split housing Extension, Super Mega Flow intake and all the neccesary fittings and gaskets to make it a complete bolt on kit.

This GT Sport Turbo Upgrade along with a HKS Hi-Power exhaust and HKS EVC with boost set to 1.0bar made 244.6 HP and 212.8 lbs of torque at the wheels. That is a 70 peak HP gain over stock and at maxium RPM there was nearly a 100 HP increase. All figures were achieved with the factory ecu and factory intercooler! For further information contact your authorized HKS dealer.

what do you guys think about them using a gt 2540R turbo? i still think they are using their not so great downpipe. Do you think this turbo is capable of getting 300 whp? Or should i just get a gt 2835? or should i just go with a turboxs kit?

I would wait. I am working on a GT25 kit as well as others that should be hotter tickets for the 300-500 whp crowd.

Do you think that they are still using a downpipe like the one they sell for the stock turbo? It seems like it would be stupid to not use a bellmouth on a bigger turbo, especially when they have to make it a different shape to accomodate the turbo. I'm still looking into fabricating the necessary equipment to run one of the larger HKS turbos. I was hoping for more out of a package from them...

Glad I searchd first I just checked out their site too.
Personally I'm disappointed in this offering. I was going to rip on them for their price, but after reviewing their site, you do get quite a bit for your money. However, I'm hoping the parts will be made available individually or bigger turbos will be offered...something. As of now, I'd rather get a TXS stage4 or piece something together of my own...or wait and see what god has up his sleeve

so by purchasing this kit, you can just bolt-on any HKS turbo? i wonder if garret has a kit like this, or one that would allow you to bolt-on the 16G's and 20G's.

Disclaimer: I've had no experience with the TZ518Z...but from what I've read/heard is that it's (TZ518Z) probably slower spooling than what HKS's dyno plot shows. I can't remember the pricing, but I'd say I go for the HKS kit.
Pending kits excluded, the more I think about this kit the more appealing it becomes. Looking at the numbers, at first I was a little underwhelmed, but this was without engine management, stock intercooler, and I'm assuming stock injectors and fuel pump. Needless to say I think there's more left in it. The thing that's appealing to me is that one one is ready to "move up" I'm assuming a bigger HKS turbo will bolt up (internally wastegated GT2835 & GT3037)...except I'm wondering about the downpipe flange? I can't wait to see what the combo will to with some tuning a fuel.

,

Yes it should be able to work with other HKS GT turbos if they have a internal wastgate.

Thanks for the info Eric. I went to HKS's site and it's the GT3037 Pro S that has the internal wastegate. The 100mm inlet may be a problem though Just checked the site agan and the GT3037 Pro S has a T3 turbine housing whereas the GT2540R has a T25. Would this be a problem?

Well you would have to have a T25 exhaust housing to fit it to the HKS pipes.

It appears as if the HKS GT25/40 spools as fast as the VF30 am I correct in saying that?

do you guys think this turbo can get me to 300 whp with the proper supporting mods reliably? i talked to hks and they told me its a bigger turbo than the vf-30 so im assuming it can. I dont really want to go anymore than 300 whp but should i just wait for hks to release a kit with the gt28? oh yeah, im in california so this will have to be on 91 octane
