CUSCO clutch officially dead after 4k miles
I have no idea why.
The pedal feels like poop. Major slippage under over 2psi boost. Ratling like there is no tommorow. The pedal always felt weird, but I didn't want to admit that the clutch isn't that good. I was hoping it would self-cure/self-adjust. But no. After all, it was pretty cheap, so I am not that upset about that. I am just not looking forward to pulling the tranny out again, DOH!!! I am looking at STi HD PP and organic STi disk. These things HAVE to be good and work well. If anyone here has an upgraded clutch on a WRX, please speak up. I want to know my options. -Alex

Could it be that maybe you just got a bad clutch?

I don't think it would go all the well if it wasn't properly aligned. Imagine a pillow on the spin cycle.
As for clutches even though people call them tranny killers the ACT clutches seem to be fairly good for higher than stock power. That day I saw you at Shiv's place your car didn't exactly sound "stock" I'll let you know after Christmas how the STi clutch compares. -Michael |

STi Type RA...
Imprezer,
give Mike Shields a call at SPD... I just pruchased a WRX STi Type RA clutch he got from Prodrive. Looks like a very decent unit, kevlar threaded and all. I'm waiting for a flywheel before installing, I'll most likely go with the Fidanza aluminium flywheel. Good luck! Matt |

Alex,
I think getting a CUSCO license plate is kind of like getting a tattoo of your girlfriend's name. Ask Tom about that one. Mark |

How about the Tilton Carbon\Carbon clutch?
its expensive, but i heard its worth it. I think they are supposed to come out with one for the WRX soon |

I forgot to mention that I have CUSCO reinforced pressure plate (1200kg) and a full organic disk. I really think that bad installation of faulty part caused all this. Nevertheless, I am looking for alternatives.
I am also considering CUSCO Twin Plate setup. It is a best compromise between grip and slip. I will just have to be carefull with it. Then, there is a super grippy CUSCO Hyper Single setup. I drove a Prelude with it today and I like it. It is not much or a drag racing clutch, but I loved it. Also to think about it. -Alex |

Imprezer
The hyper single was am amazing AMAZING unit. It was very impressive in every way - it helped the spool up so much and the low rpm action as well! i am convinced my tranjny broke mostly from the HP that was freed up when this lightweight sucker got on my car. Only problem is with that super light weight and grabby nature - it takes some effort every time you start off to not stall - - and as you mentioned - its not for drag racing ]] I tried to slip it one run down the 1/4 mile and it got so damm hot the flywheel turned blue. . . . with 250 miles on it it looked like 100,000 miles ! So long as drag racing and fast starts are not your interest - then its great - once you're rolling it shifts fantastic I have had NO PROBLEM with my cusco organic disk and p. plate so far - - it feels just like stock - but makes a funny smell when I slip it hard off the line The cusco and the sti units are all made by exedy as far as I know - as is the hyper single |

PS - Jan Shim told me at the time I bought the hyper single from him that the twin plate hits even harder !

Of course I did.
Twin Plate cannot hit harder. The PP is rated 200kg less and both disks are carbon. -Alex |

Can someone explain how twin disc and triple disc clutches work? Are they stacked on top of one another so that the discs grab themeselves along with the flywheel?

think of how the pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel, now just imagine putting one or two more plates that are bolted down in between the two. Then the clutch disks are all on the output shaft just like a normal clutch would be with a single clutch plate.
that's basically it we've got a few NSX clutches floating around at work that I've seen. It's a dual plate unit and interesting to look at. |

The Cusco twin plate is carbon disc? Sweet! I always thought they were cero-metallic.

I know that Cusco advertises that Twin Plate like a MUTHA in Japan. If they put so much advertising into it...it must be good.
If I had the Spare 1K$ I would probably buy it. Damn...ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS for a CLUTCH. That is alot of money...but if you have it to burn...burn it! Andy |

Its a bit more than 1k and its not just the clutch. Its clutch+flywheel, so it isn't THAT bad if you think about it. The flywheel alone goes for 400-500.

Exactly. Like most twin plate systems it includes the flywheel (chrom-moly). The other clutch that might be a good alternative is the ATS carbon clutch. It is ful carbon and their single plate is rated for 400PS. Nice thing about that one is that it is compatible with the stock flywheel so you can use stock or aftermarket no problem. I'll be trying out the full face Cusco like Alex had myself. We shall see how it holds up.
