Default 87 gl wagon won't start.

Hi all...
My 87 gl wagon (1800cc) will crank but not turn over (not even a hiccup).
I have spark, smell gas after pumping gas pedal, compression is fine. Suggestions?

This.

If you have spark, fuel and compression, that leaves you with only 1 thing, timing. Maybe it jumped a tooth or two.

Is it an EA82?
If so than it is non-interference and all you need to do is set the timing up correctly, put it all back together and be on your way.

Also, you might want to head over to the old USMB http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/. They specialize in the older L series over on that site. Probably could get more answers there than here.

Have your battery checked. You might be low on cranking amps. How old is the battery?

Or the tensioner went and chewed the belt up. Happened to me once, not a fun fix.

you have 2 timing belts, long one on the drivers side and short on the pass side , take the dist cap off, have some one spin the engine and see if the dist rotor turns with the engine, if not the long belt is broken

^^This^^

If you need any sort of step by step on doing the timing belts or if there might be something else you'd want to do while you're in there doing the belts, PM me or post up here. I've owned over 36 older generation Subarus, most of them with the EA82 engine in them. I currently have an '89 XT6, '87 RX with a EJ22T and a '89.5 RX shell that is getting the '87s drivetrain.
