Wow! Good info here. When I bought my first oil filter from the dealership, they handed my the short blue one. I said "No, the filter that's on now is taller and it's black". I've been getting the 160 filter from the dealership since all the other aftermarket filters I looked at for this engine are the short variety too. I'll be buying that 6 pack off eBay later today.

Not the car's fault that it sucked so bad.
  • 1982 Civic Hatchback. This was my wife's first car out of college, bought used. Served her well.
  • 1982 Accord Hatchback. Bought used. This car served me well.
  • 1989 Civic DX Hatchback. Stripper car, and first car I bought new. Served me well.
  • 1999 Civic DX Hatchback. Bought new. I still have this car with 136k miles on it. Runs great. This is the car my teenage kids use now.
  • 2003 Ody EX-L. This is my wife's current car. It has 130k miles, so I can't complain too much. Tranny was replaced under warranty. Power sliding door often don't open when it gets cold outside. Rear leftgate is rusting. Meh, could have been a lot worse, could have been a lot better.
The problems with the Ody, and my dislike of the cars Honda was selling during the 2000-now years, made me start looking at other brands. Gave the TDI a try; disaster, as you know.

Decided to go with a Japanese car again in 2012, but wanted something more interesting than a Civic or Corolla, so I came away with the Impreza. Thought (and still think) the boxer engine and the symmetrical AWD make it an interesting, fun car. I'm hoping to get many, many happy miles out of it.

Reviews I read of the Accord Coupe with the V6 engine an the manual tranny sounded brilliant. I need a car that's more practical than that, but I was glad to read gushing reviews of the car, after so many ho-hum years from Honda.
Hmm, some similarities I can relate to:

'89 Buick Skylark, Quad4 - first car I bought new, totaled in '91 @ 71K miles

’99 Explorer Limited - Has 157k miles, my teenager is driving.

2002 Ody EX- my wife currently drives. It has 179K and the transmission was replaced under warranty @ 85K back in 2005.

I traded in my ’09 Civic to get this Impreza because of the cracking problem with ’06-’09 Honda’s R18 engine block. I also wanted something more interesting than the bland Civic and Corolla but with good fuel economy too. The all new Impreza’s arrival was perfect timing and I hope it lasts a long time too.

So I ended up calling the dealership to verify. According to them, the two filters are "interchangeable" and Subaru recently made the change due to "supply issues" with the Rokis. There was no indication that the Rokis are obsolete or have actually been replaced. They seem to still be available upon request from most dealerships. Both filters are listed on the websites for all dealerships with parts estores that I checked, and interestingly enough, practically every online source of the Rokis seems to be a dealer (including the ebay link posted earlier in this thread, which seems to have upped their price after the publicity). If you are looking to stock up, I suggest checking the estores of a few local dealerships. Some allow pickup and have pricing as low as ~$5.50 for the Rokis, which is a decent savings over the e-bay link, which has subsequently become $45.87 with shipping, or $7.65 each, almost the $7.85 retail price.

Why does Advance and Autozone list the following filters?

Mobil1 M1-110
Purolator PL14612

The ones I've listed are greater in diameter and volume, but those will work fine too.

Filter specified in manual: 15208AA160
Filter previously supplied by dealer: 15208AA160
Filter used by dealer today: 15208AA15A

160 is a Tokyo Roki filter and 15A is a Honeywell filter. I'm not too sure how the two may otherwise be different.

Now the question is, if the 15A filter fits, can I just leave it in until the next time I change the oil? Or should I return to the dealer and request they replace it with the 160?

Thanks in advance for weighing in on this.
Changed my oil yesterday. I had to go to two dealerships to get the filter and crush washer. The first dealership said they were "out of filters." Craziness. The second dealership gave me a 15208AA160, so at least some dealers still have the old filters.

How much did the dealership charge you for the 160's? Ebay has em for around $7 each.

So, how many people have had oil filter failures? Ive bought 5 dollar - 10 dollar filters and they all lasted to my oil change time frame.

Napa Gold are very high quality and should be fine if you are worried about the quality of the filter

I'll continue to use the black "160" Roki filters for as long as I can find them for a good price. I've also heard that Purolator makes good filters, so that might be my non-OEM brand of choice.

Most aftermarket filters would do fine in any application. Subaru filters have a crazy high 23 psi bypass rating. Most aftermarket filters have around 10 psi. I don't know why Subaru calls for such a high bypass rating? It has to be for a reason. I will stick to the 160 filter.

FYI - Don't know if this is nation-wide but the 15208AA16 filter price dropped to $5.18 @ my local dealership and they have plenty in stock. The phase out must be going slow.

That is cheaper than the 160's of which I have 12 sitting on the shelf

The dealership charged me $7.06 for the filter and $1.08 for the washer. The real bargain was the oil. I got it on sale at O'Reilly for $4.99/qt.

WOW! My "stealership" charged me $7.95 for the filter and $2.10 for the washer! I supplied the oil because I didn't want Subaru oil(aka; Mobil 1) used! Oh, the labor was $11.09!

Dang. I always find it crazy that a tiny metal ring costs even $1.00. Seems like they should just give it to me free with the filter. Oh well.

I think I am going to keep buying the OEM filter since it is not super expensive, but I am definitely going to get a fumoto valve. I am tired of getting oil all over my hands.

And garage floor, unless your aim is really good and you have a big oil catch pan.
