CirrusWRX, I'd like to thank you again for posting this thread. I looked at the FPR and indeed the little vacuum hose was not attached to the manifold. The CEL went out immediately when the hose was connected.

It makes us happy to give back to the community which has given so much to us!
I know this FAQ isn't a be all end all, silver-bullet for the P0171, and there are bound to be incidents which are going to be solved by doing something not on the list, but hopefully, in most cases, this should solve a majority of them- glad to hear you were one of them! |

tracking my code down was very very simple. at the time of de-modding my car, we weren't able to reflash it that day, so we adjusted the fuel scaling via DeltaDash to be close to what it should be. apparently, the ecu didn't like that. it was clearly running nice and rich like it should, but the ecu was unhappy for some reason and kept throwing this code.
got it flashed yesterday and it runs like a champ. |

Russ - added your comment as a #9 up top. Somebody else in person told me they had an issue with their UTEC. As it turns out, he self-admittedly didn't know what he was doing, as told by his tuner when he went to go get it professionally tuned. He was just running lean and was legitimately throwing the code.
I'm no tuner and haven't the foggiest about understanding ECU parameters, but seems like it might be yet another way to get this thing to show up. Glad you got yours figured out! |

CirrusWRX, you may want to add to #9 that ecutek users not remove larger injectors and replace them with stockers unless they can immediately get reflashed. what we did was take an ecu that was tuned for the STi pinks and then adjusted via DD live tuning to be scaled for the smaller stockers. this was a band-aid to get me to work (although very slowly) until it could be flashed. i was legitimately running the same AFR's as i otherwise would have, but the ecu was unhappy with something causing the code. i was also triggering MAF sensor failure codes at the same time.

My P0171 Story
Great guide - real neat idea that we have all these possible causes on one thread.
My P0171 story goes as follows: Car started idling rough around 25,000 miles. Knew from previous car that air sensors get dirty so I tracked down the IACV solenoid and cleaned it with carb cleaner. I cleaned it when the engine was warm and the IACV gasket did seem mis-shapen. Anyway, idle problem would come and go - one day fine, next day problems. This situation continued and I didn't have chance to look at it for 3 months. Thing that brought mine to a conclusion was when my car started overheating! - I was losing coolant. Turns out that the IACV gasket must have been leaking water into the air intake. I bought a new gasket and haven't had problems with idle since. Moral of story is - either clean IACV when engine is cold (so gasket doesn't get misshapen) or buy a new IACV gasket ($8) when cleaning the IACV. Steve |

i am surprised that this thread is not a sticky?? So many people get the code, and if not for this thread, would still be pissing in the wind....

ok well first i cleaned the maf, then i went to look for leaks and noticed the vacuum hose from the bov to the intake had blown off on the intake side. It didnt seem to fit very well so i went and got a new longer hose, cleared cell and so far after 50 miles or so still isnt back on, the previous time i cleared it, it reapeared after only a mile so i think i fixed the problem with the hose. If for some reason it comes back on ill let u know, thanks again for the write up...

crank0r: Sounds like you got that one nailed down. I'd be 99% certain that you found and fixed your issue. Be honest now, how long did it take? Finding a disconnected hose usually takes 30.6 seconds or about 5 hours... which one was it? |

I got the same code after getting re-tuned for 95 oct. I kept getting P0171. I'm planning on replacing the A/F sensor in the passengers side exhaust header. My tuner spoke with Ecutek and they said that that code seems to come up when that sensor starts going bad...
You guys know if that is true or not??? Update: I replace the sensor and still got the code. Not sure what else it could be Last edited by Lowball; 06-23-2005 at 12:35 PM. |

I've gotten this code after going from Stage 4 back to stock. Using Delta Dash I'm seeing very high AFR on boost like 20-25 when I'm at 10psi. Idle AFR seems about right at 14-15. Does this sound like the 02 or something else? I've tried fuel cleaner and I've checked all my hoses. Thanks!
