Default Tire size on stock '06 17"s

I need some new rubber and want to go wider than the 215/45/17 that are on it right now. The tires I want are 235/40/17 BFG KDWS. Had em before on a previous car and liked them. I Plan on getting some springs in the very near future as well. Will I have any issues with the tires being wider? Taller? I think they will be fine but just want other opinions.

kdws arent the greatest and they get LOUD

I've heard so much of that they get loud. I had 2 sets of 17's on my prelude and never noticed.

If you really want to, you can mount 235/40R17 on your stock 17x7. BUT you might run into a problem with the tire rubbing the strut under high loads.

Skip Barber racing mounts 235/40R17 BFG R1 on the stock 17x7 wheels on their MX-5 racing school.

225/45R17 will fit fine on the 17x7 06 wheels. Many people mount the RE070 on their stock 06 wheels.

Do you really need all season tires where you live? Get some tires that have great steering response as in having stiff sidewalls. Dunlops direzza sport Z1 star spec tires are awesome for that as they have steel cord reinforced two ply sidewalls.

I've got a good deal on the KDW's. I snowboard a lot so I would like something that performs well in the wet too. I'm going to go with 235's. Its not going to rub and If 255s fit on stock '07 sti rims then I should be good. If not then well...

and the faulty logic of this is epic

and kdw's are WAY down on the list of 'good' tires for your useage

and saving $$$ on tires that may wreck ya isnt saving any $$$

and then, well....

i don't understand.. other than going snowboarding, does it constantly snow where you are?? from what i've read on and off here, you'd want smaller tires in that type of weather and basically just snow tires, not all seasons.. all seasons are mediocre tires with mediocre performance, they don't do well in anything.. kdws are mediocre tires that do just ok in dry and wet, that's it

This logic is not right... 255 fits on stock 07 STI wheels because the wheel is a 17x8 (an inch wider than the 06 wheels), and the STI comes with 225/45R17 stock.

But, most 235/40R17 will fit on the stock 06 wheels without issues.

If you will drive in the snow often, wide is NOT your friend.

Well, 1 inch, or difference between my stockers and sti rims is approx 25mm, or similar to the change my buddy made with his sti, or like me going from 215-235. tires are mounted and ride great. as for the snow, I meant that I drive in crappy weather, not too often but enough to where I worry about my handling in it. look great (IMO) and love em. Thanks for the opinions

this logic is bull****

the minimum wheel width for 235/40 is 8"

NOT 7 inches

235/40 is too wide for a 7 inch wide wheel

I have 17x7.5 wheels and THAT is really too narrow

I've had no rubbing issues at all but think initial turn in may be affected from the wider rubber. They went on no problem and after 10k miles still love the look/tires. I still get compliments from people, even ones that know nothing on tires, which may be why the are complimenting me, on the set up. Obviously, going this wide on stock is not for everyone, but damn, I think it looks good. Which is all that really matters

225/45/17 requires 7.0" of rim width
235/45/17 requires 7.5" of rim width
225/40/17 requires 7.5" of rim width
235/40/17 requires 8.0" of rim width

It is well well out of spec to put 235/40/17 tires on 17x7" rims. Stick to 225/45/17 if you want width on those rims.

That is a "recommended" wheel width by the manufacturer. Depending on the tire, it will also vary a little bit. For example, the Skip Barber Race School uses 235/40R17 on their 17x7 miata cars. In the Mazdaspeed Challenge, those cars have a mandatory tire size of 245/45R17 on the required 17x7" wheels.

So are you saying that the NASA ProRacing rules are completely bull**** and have no clue what they are doing?

I'm not saying that the 235/40R17 BFG KDW is the recommended fit for the WRX 17x7 stock wheels. What I am saying is that they will fit without problems such as being unsafe, rubbing or any other sort of contact.

Track conditions and road conditions are totally different. Putting a low profile tire like 235/40/17 on a narrow rim, you will not be getting the sidewall absorption the tire is designed for. On a race track, who cares. When you hit a relatively small pothole and dent your rim, you'll know it's because you put on a tire that's totally out of spec.

40 sidewall should not be more than a 20% stretch. 245 on 7.0" is 37.8% stretch. NOT EVEN CLOSE TO SPEC!

Do you know what the sidewall height of a 215/45R17 is compared to a 235/40R17? The difference is less than a 1/8", I would hardly call a 3.65" sidewall "low-profile".

A 245/45R17 is not stretched on a 7" wheel, it is the opposite. A stretch would be installing a 215/45R17 on a 9" wheel.

I dont give a rats bloody bleeding ass what you think

putting a 235/40 on a 17x7 wheel is just wrong

doing it to adhere to some ****ing stupid classing rule just means that the idiot doing that to adhere to the stupid rules is an idiot for playing that game

Is that really necessary?

I think you have some useful knowledge in your brain, but the delivery of this said information is perhaps not always helpful.

The OP asked if there will be any issues putting a particular tire on his stock wheels. Can you tell me what issues would occur since you seem to be so upset about this?

Yes, I guess everyone running the Mazdaspeed class in NASA is an idiot.

First off, I never said there was a problem with the height of a 235/40/17 tire for a 06-07 WRX. The difference is exactly .22" which, btw, is more than 1/8th inch. Not that it's a problem, I'm just correcting your math which you seem to have forwarded to imply that I don't know something.

245/45/17 is 45 sidwall. It can handle up to a 30% stretch in spec. 245 on a 7.0" rim is 37.8% stretch, as we said before. It's a lot CLOSER to spec on an 45 sidewall but STILL out of spec.

Sorry if you don't like the word "stretch" being used to imply a wider tire than rim but it's fairly obvious what I mean and I cannot think of a more appropriate term.
