Default Navi Head Unit Frozen

I recently bought a 2010 2.5i with the navi head unit. The unit is totally frozen on either the language select screen or the 'do not operate while driving' warning screen. The first time we test drove it was stuck but you could get it to slide down to eject and it would play a cd (but with no control), now it is just frozen. The dealer I bought it from contacted the local Subaru dealership and they told him that the head unit is shot. They are ordering a new one but say it's on back order.

I'm not personally convinced that it's 100% dead and was curious if there was anything that could be done to try and reset the unit? Any suggestions are much appreciated. It's been several weeks and I'm going mad without a radio in the car!

Well I pulled the fuse for a bit, I can get the unit to open and it will play a cd, but none of the audio controls work. The other controls such as 'menu' 'destination' etc work, but the audio controls like track/seek don't do anything. Nothing on the touch screen works and the steering controls do nothing either. Occasionally if you touch a certain place on the touch screen the unit just tilts/opens.

So is this behavior further indicative of a defective unit at this point? Any suggestions or feedback is much appreciated!

sounds like the firmware is corrupted. have you try to look and see if there's a way to manually update the firmware through usb or something?

There's no way that I can find to do it via usb. Every once in a while the touchscreen will work and I was able to restore the system defaults, but then the touchscreen stops working again. Seems like the touch is the bigger issue, the radio is locked out because I can't hit 'agree' on the touch screens 'do not use while driving' warning screen...

I've been getting things to come on and go out but then they eventually fail again after restarting the unit. I would LOVE some way to flash or reset the unit firmware fully, but it looks like there's no user hack without having some kind of tool (what is it called, accesspoint)?

Frustrated...

accessport is for ECU tuning only. that's for the computer chip that controls the engine. Sorry since I don't have the nav unit I don't feel like doing research on it lol. I am sure there is a way to update the firmware via USB or external source on these unit. I "might" have seen a thread for it before. But if subaru is replacing it for you there is no reason to bother your time and do all this research on a potentially defected unit lol.

Yes, I can eject the maps DVD, that doesn't seem to be the problem. One out of 10 starts the touch screen works for several minutes, and I can see the maps fine so I don't think it's the maps data. I was able to reset the system to its defaults and am still having the same problems. Everything I do seems to suggest it's a faulty unit, I was just hoping I could get to something more low level, i.e. flashing the firmware; sounds great, but I can't find any info on doing this, and am not sure the usb port is working anyways as I haven't been able to get it to respond on those rare occasions when the unit is responsive.

The USB won't do anything. It's for input only, but not for system related updates. The only way to update is to get a newer version of the DVD maps.

Well, when I jimmy'd the ribbon cable connecting the touchscreen the unit has come to life for a while. It had done this before before becoming unresponsive again. Everything seems to be related to the touchscreen becoming unresponsive. Is there any way for me to confirm whether or not this could stem from a degraded/faulty ribbon cable? Does anyone know if this is a proprietary cable or if it's a standard part?

I've also noticed that the aux-in only plays through my right speakers, but I'm assuming this is an unrelated wiring issue. Any suggestions about the ribbon cable, or less importantly how to check the aux wiring (built in), are much appreciated!
