I have been wanting to run EL headers but every oil pan thread i find has conflicting views on what needs to be purchased when going from the 2.0L to the 2.5L pan. It's either you just need a pan, or the pan and pick up or some other crazy combination. Can I get a little help on what all i should be getting pre-swap?
Thanks

Have you decided on a header manufacturer yet? Once that is decided we can move forward regarding the selection of a pan/pickup if need be.

I can tell you this... If you go from a WRX 2.0 pan to an STi (or 06+ WRX, Legacy GT, Forester XT) oil pan you WILL need to change the pickup too. The baffling is different, the angle of the pickup is different and the depth the pickup goes into the pan is different.

So let us know what header you decide on and we'll go the next step

I was able to use my stock 2.0L pickup on my 2.5L oil pan. However I had to whack the pickup a few times to get it where it needed to be. I wouldn't recommend doing it but it worked for me and has been for a year now. I'll be removing it all soon.....Killerb pan and pickup going in with a new motor

^^ You've got to be a little careful when doing this because the EJ20 pickup is 1/2" shorter (if memory serves me correctly) than the EJ25 pickups. If you use an 04-05 EJ25 version it's not as bad as the 06+ EJ25 versions because the 06+ version pans are a little deeper still.

I would never wack a oil pickup. You will never know if it has developed a fracture after being wacked. Maybe heated with a torch and gently formed. We add a sheetmetal extra brace to the pickups we use to try a prevent any vibrations from causing a fracture in the pickup.

I like big pans with extra wings and swinging gates and I know the ones I use will not fail.

LOL, don't listen to me, I'm biased, but there's a reason the pans I make have no moving parts

Yes. Pan, pickup, & baffle (oil control tray). Some get by without the dipstick and dipstick tube just by knowing how much to put in at oil changes and where 'full' is on the hybrid setup. If you want it to read just like OEM, you'll need a new dipstick and dipstick tube. You do not need to change the oil pump.

Hmm I did not know the different pans gave different readings on the dipstick I was going to replace my Ej22E pan from one from a 03 WRX so that means I'd need a new dipstick too right?

From what I hear, some are interchangable, but I don't know all the combinations.

Mine did that too, there was a plug above the oil dipstick tube that Moroso didn't use any thread sealer on.

If it's the pan I make, you may not be full yet. When I put the first prototype on my car it was a hair over +1 quart (~5.4 quarts). The other prototypes that are installed out there needed even more to register full (~5.5 quarts) and since the prototypes, I made a few design tweaks that would push that capacity up a bit more so I wouldn't be suprised if you could add another .5-.8 quarts to register full.

The other thing here is that Subarus are notorious for reading all over the map as far as how much oil it takes to show 'full'. There are many threads on this, and many theories on how best to check your oil (hot, cold, warm, in the dark under a full moon, etc.). I followed the OEM design to avoid the issues that other aftermarket pans have with thier dipstick adapters or universal dipstick kits.

When I do an oil change I typically check the oil a bunch of times for about a week after the change and average out the readings. When I installed this pan I started with it not showing and just kept adding until it was where I wanted. Now I know what it takes for every oil change to come.

Can it be fixed without taking the oil pan off. Thats where my is leaking now? Can it be fixed in 1 day? I don't want to drop it off again just had the drain plug helicoiled.

I do. I sell it primarily to people running the Cosworth pan (since the Coswroth pan is just a reworked OEM one).

I still highly recommend if you do any aggressive driving you upgrade to an STi (or any 06+ EJ25 pan). It's cheap insurance against oil starvation that often happens with the flat bottom OEM pans.

Mine was fixed very quickly with the car up on a lift. All you need to do is drain the oil, pull that plug out, replace the plug with some thread sealer, and put oil back in. I had a very slight leak right up until I vented my crawford AOS to atmosphere... with it vented to atmosphere the leak got a lot worse.

Note that you re-use the old dipstick tube with the STI dipstick.

Question to the Gurus,

I just finish my hybrid motor break-in.

While changing the oil I notice some oil residue around the bolts holding the oil pan (2.0 pan). I cleaned out the area. 2 days later I see the oil again.

I'm a little confused to either replacing the 2.0 pan or get a sti pan? also what parts would I need?

I never had any issues with the 2.0 pan. Please help me decide.

Thanks.
