Last response to you because you know everything and I am just a newb.

I clearly stated that there is no difference that we are aware of. I'm just following the actual company that made my car. Sorry I feel more comfortable trusting what the engineers said than a forum "expert".

You have yet to give evidence why I shouldn't follow what Subaru says, you just keep throwing out facts for the models that don't include my model. If you read my manual, it states to refer to your maintenance log book, which has a separate page for each 2013 model. The WRX/STI page states 7500 mile OCI. That's all I need. I get the 2011 and 2012 books say 3750, but I can only tell you what mine and the OP are seeing.

Well.. Accessport is available for 2013s now so warranty probably won't be useable anymore going stage 1.. So oil change I'm going rotella t6 and what not. Stage 2 around 25k miles most likely if I can hold off..

Do this

At 7500 do an oil change, take a sample of the old oil and have it sent out for analysis...when the results come back you'll have your answer on what your interval should be and we can finally end this stupid debate

An idea: dont be a lemming, and dont follow the manual word for word, do your own research and use your own insight, ive seen people bring in their new cars for oil changes at that interval and ive drained that oil and its always pitch black which is a sign that its way too old to be used in an engine

My 2013 manual states that 5w40 can be used so I don't know what maddmaxx is rambling on about.

Read it again, it says u can use regular 5w40 for topoff if synthetic 5w30 isn't available. It does not say you can just use it for full changes. Atleast mine doesn't

As confirmed by Subaru themselves when I contacted customer service to clarify. 5w-30 synthetic is the only acceptable oil for changes. I did a UOA on the Subaru brand oil and it came back great, so that's what I'm going with, personally.

I'll be giving the 5W-30 Sustina a go in about 2 more months give or take a day or two.

The way I see it, if they found good reason to remove 5w-40 as acceptable (long term), then maybe they found a connection between engine failure due to the higher viscosity. :dunno: I know we've all had good luck with Rotella, so I do find that hard to believe.

Just to add to the speculation... Were there any EPA regulations that got changed for MY2013? I could see them requiring energy conserving 5w30, and not supporting the use of 5w40 purely for fleet efficiency statistics.

FWIW, I'm 100% all for using mfr suggested oil weights, but quality and consistency of oil still matters. Things like Mobile1 5w30 are still unacceptable because it WILL shear down to a lighter weight over time. Using German Castrol, Amsoil, etc, any known good oil that will not shear down would be the only warranty-friendly alternative to running T6 if you're concerned about the longevity of your motor. At the end of the day, if you use the proper oil and can skip having to make a warranty claim in the first place, isn't that better anyway?

German Castrol and Amsoil are not warranty friendly choices. Last I checked Amsoil does not submit for certification and GC is a 0w, not 5W, and I don't think it carries an energy conserving designation on its packaging.

Edit: GC is SL rated, so not a good choice.

Thanks for posting this, it clearly states what I have been saying the whole time. I am going to stick with a 5w30 every 5k until I hit my 60k warranty end. I am changing for the first time at 3k this weekend, so my first sample probably won't make it to blackstone till April.

There's a lot of misinformation in this thread, but i'm busy so I'll just respond quickly.

Subaru of America has allowed 7,500 intervals since mid-2011 MY.

http://drive.subaru.com/sum12_QuickStops.aspx

Yes, this is on 5W-30 and, as noted by others, the manual only refers to 5W-40 CONVENTIONAL for replenishment only. There is no such thing as 5W-40 conventional!!!

To those running Motul 5W-30, it is not API SN certified. IMO, this is a good thing but some people are afraid of not running SN oil. A dealer will not ask you if your oil is SN or not. Motul Eco-nergy is a thin 30 weight and is SL rated with a stronger anti-wear package. X-clean is a thick 30 weight that meets Euro ACEA A3 specs like GC. It also has a nice shot of zinc and meets API SM specs.

Amsoil OE and XL lines are fully API SN / ILSAC GF5 certified.

Mobil1 5w-30 API SM shears from just shaking the bottle, but the API SN has shown decent uoa results in a WRX. Check bitog. There's just not much data on it.

Rotella T6 meets API SM specs for gasoline engines.

Royal Purple xW-30 API SM has been shown to shear like Mobil1 and EVERY other Energy Conserving 5W-30. RP High Performance Street is their good non-girly man oil.

Reflash your ECU or mod your car and your powertrain warranty is out the window anyway. Warranty schmarranty. Buy M1 5W-30 for the receipt and exchange it for M1 0W-40. Not that I condone this behavior.

To those that think one or two random $30 uoa's are useful in comparing wear between brands, this is not true.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/used-oil-analysis/

Note that the manual says that 5W-30 synthetic is required for "optimum engine performance", not that 5W-30 API SN is required for warranty coverage. BTW, there is no industry definition of synthetic. It is only a marketing term.

Maybe you can shead some light Dennis as to why the foot notes in the owners manuals state verbiage along the lines of "Severe Conditions" requiring oil changes at 3750 miles, and that turbocharge engines automatically fall under these severe condition requirements.

Meh, that was pretty standard operating procedure for a NASIOC oil discussion. I don't think anyone cried this time.

Not trying to hijack the thread or anything, but from what I've read, is it a myth to go from synthetic, to regular on a 06? curious

It was between Mobil 1 0w-40 and German Castrol for me. After doing some research I use German Castrol since 1000 miles with 3,750 intervals. I do have some fun in the car so I will stick with the (severe use) 3,750 mile intervals for the life of the car. I change it myself so it only cost me 30 bucks on sale.
