Default Failed my vision test for my license renewal. Question about contacts.

Yeah, I couldn’t believe it either. My driver’s license expired so it was time to renew and when the vision test came up I made a mistake on 2 of the letter out of something like 12 on the bottom line. That means I failed. So I drive to the ophthalmologist and get a sight screening.

Oph: Why are you here?
KGVr4: I failed my driver’s license vision test.
Oph: Ok, let’s start with an exam.
Exam takes place
Oph: Ok, seriously why are you here? You don’t have an impairment that would preclude you from passing the state vision test. Seriously, I purposely give people the vision you have for a living, I don’t understand why you are here. However yore right eye is slightly deficient and I can give you a trial of contact lenses to test drive if you like. You will only need one as you have perfect vision in yore other eye.

I go back to the DMV with the form he filled out and they put a restriction on my license because I failed the test regardless of him signing off on my vision. Outside Mirrors on Each Side of the vehicle. Isn’t this federal law now? I haven’t seen a vehicle without a passenger side rearview mirror since the late 80’s early 90’s. I think to myself, this is not worth fighting over, **** it. Thanks for running me all over the place for hours DMV.

So, about contacts … I like the contact, but I know NOTHING about them other than they are CIBA VISION Dailies and how to put them in and take them out. What else should I know?

If I fall asleep/take a nap with them in (2-3 hours) is it going to be a problem?

Is there a specific brand that I should test drive? Are weekly’s better? Extended wear? ETC?

Seriously, I had to adjust my tin foil hat because I started thinking they were receiving kickbacks from ophthalmologists.

If you sleep in them you run the risk of blinking them out, otherwise they're harder to take out.
I use two week disposables, but have been using the same pair for probably a year. YMMV

I've been wearing contacts on a daily basis since I was about 15. Flat-out, you get used to them.

I've slept with them in... the byproduct is that you wake up with very dry contacts. Move 'em around, blink a few times... problem solved. Be as it may, I've gotten into a system where I can't live without correction... i.e. if my contacts come out, my glasses are on. The second my lenses start irritating me, I change 'em. This usually equates to about 3 months or so of daily wear.

My girlfriend has very similar vision to mine, and she wears her contacts when she feels like it... same approach to her glasses. I don't get it, I can't imagine being that "blind," but I do see her standpoint in that she's used to it, which I am not since I've been rocking correction for over a decade.

So, in conclusion, I just blabbered a bunch and I'm not sure I helped. Contacts kick ass because you're vision is 95% perfect 100% of the time.

Do you clean them or have you just left them in that long? Again, this may be a stupid question but I seriously have ZERO clue about these things.

What kind of contacts are you rocking? The dailys or something else?

Yeah, the ophthalmologists had to back down the prescription 2 steps from perfect vision in my right eye because I was trippin balls.

Been wearing 2 week disposables for almost 10 years now. I've always disposed them at the two week mark, they can honeycomb up and can be bad for your eyes. Never slept with them on unless I passed out drunk, but you get used to them, I don't even notice that I'm wearing them (feel wise, of course i can notice by seeing 20/20). I'm using acuvue advance btw.

I need to get PRK.

I take then out every night and put them in saline cleaning solution.
If you wore then for that long you'd have corneal ulcers and they'd fuse to your eyes.

They're monthly's. Iv'e been through half a dozen brands over the years, and they're all the same. You wear them until they bother you, and then chuck 'em and crack open a new pair. This translates to anywhere between 2 and 4 months per pair. If I'm conscious enough at bedtime, (which is 95% of the time), they come out before I crash.

The shocker that people usually gasp at: I use Target brand contact solution, and have forever. It's like, $4 for 3 months worth of squirt. As I said, never had a problem.

He taught me how to put them in, take them out, and throw them away daily. I didn't have questions until I got home and thought about it for a while.

Contact wearer since the age of 12 here. Don't sleep with them in. They'll just dry out and it will suck.

I recently upgraded to Acuvue Hydraclear from Advanced 2. For once, the commercials were right. Immediately upgrade in comfort and un-noticeability.

I've been doing that for a while...until my last exam where the doc could see some effects of wearing contacts past their best buy date.

I am -6 in both eye's, they are still very slowly getting worse, but not stigmatisms or whatever yet. Due to slowly changing eye sight I am not going to try for laser eye surgury until they stop changing. I REALLLLLLY hate glasses. I am a stickler for having them clean constantly and not having crap on them or smudges. However I work in a refinery and I can't wear contacts at work due to the risk of getting something in my eyes, solid/liquid/gas, and if you wear contacts there is a chance it can get stuck behind the contact and do more damage to your eye. Anyways I digress.
Most chances I get I wear contacts outside of work, I used to do disposable daily ones, but my eye's didn't seem to care for that peticular brand so I switched to acuvu(sp?) oasis and so far they have been great.

Like some said above, if you catch a nap with them in they will be dry, your eyes will probably not be all that happy with you either. Probably wake up with red eye's and depending how irritated your eyes are they may try and water a lot to compensate which can obviously lead to a ton of eye gunk you will need to clean out.
Any halfway decent eye doc will tell you that you shouldn't wear contacts 24/7. Your eyes need time to breath, even the best contacts can't offer that. If your Doc has one of those charts that shows different things that can happen to your eyes if you leave contacts in for too long I suggest you look at it to see what can happen.

When I wear contacts I usually carry a small bottle of eye drops with me for if my eyes start to feel dry or the contacts are bothering me. Don't always need it but it is nice to have.

Obviously the problem isn't your eyes. Your next step should be to get your GED since you're having issues with yore letters.

I've been wearing my 2 weeks for about 3 months at a time, and I sleep in them. I've done this for about 10 years. Doc's have never noticed anything D:

It is something I worry about though. Thinking about lasik, etc ;o

I've been wearing Frequency 55 for about seven years and never had a problem with them. They are meant to be worn for one month per pair, but I normally double or triple that and have never had an issue.

Napping is just fine, sometimes they will get "stuck" in place blink a bit and they will be back to normal. Sleeping not so much (for me at least); I've slept a few nights with them in and wake up to very blurry/hazy vision. I suspect because the type I wear are not meant to be worn to sleep and are not allowing my eyes to "breathe" enough.

Depending on what brand/type you get (ask your doctor on this) they should come out every night and sit in a cleaning solution until you put them in the next morning. Again, this depends what type of contacts you get...

Careful wearing them overnight, my friend got an eye ulcer and it looked hella painful, a white spot on his eye appeared. Also keep them clean so no bacteria or infection will form inside your eyelid. I have seen some pretty messed up photos of people who don't clean their lenses, it ain't pretty.

Timely thread is timely, but slightly depressing. It's been 20 years since I tried wearing contacts, and I'm ready to give them another shot. But goddamn, I'd really hoped that 20 years would've resulted in contacts that you can wear 24/7 for a month at a time without any ill effects.

$20 to that poor bastard behind the desk would have gotten you your license.
$50 would get you a motor cycle license as well.
$100 would get you all of the above plus a class C license. In case you wanted to borrow a semi for your next road trip.

Sadly, the human eye has not evolved in 20 years.

But there is a technological solution, it involves lasers.

KGVR4: Likely the test at your DMV is out of calibration. You should have asked when they last had it tested/refocused.
