Default oil change question:

Hey all,

I recently took my car to have the oil changed. I usually change it myself but being lazy and having just moved to florida I decided to pay to have it changed at the local dealer. Now here is my question: after reviewing the bill from the dealer, I noticed the bill listed the oil I was charged for as 5W20. Is this normal? Perhaps the tech used 5W30? I always use the recommended 5W30 when changing it myself. Possible price mess up?, even the oil cap provides for you that you use 5w30. The dealer is closed now so I was just looking for some thoughts on the matter. I'll call tomorrow,

Thanks

For Florida? Doesn't make sense. Take it easy driving until you get an answer/change. Unless the temperature just hit -15 F.

5w30 in FL should be a minimum I would think, even in winter. For summer definitely beef it up past that.

What kind of dealer?

5W20 is oil for some Honda, Ford and Chrysler engines. It could be quite good oil but WRX engine is not right application.

It was a Subaru dealership. Also, they did have Jeep and Chrysler as well.

Did you notice that the 2 is next to the 3 on the keyboard? Either way dude, it's not a big deal....have some ice cream and watch an old movie and relax. People put WAY too much brain power into oil questions; it's a car, not the space shuttle.

I run 10W-30 in mine, as per the recommendation of a mechanic for SPT/ESX, who has been working for Subaru for 28 years.

Space shuttle has the computing power of a HP calculator. Its also has a lot of parts replaced every flight. It was never a cost effective material launcher, And thats why we are moving away from the shuttle and back to traditional designs. Lower cost, easier maintainance.

20 weight is way light, unless your running some super tight tolerances. Some auto mfgs recommended 20 because it increases fuel economy, even if its not the best thing for the motor.

Look at what subaru recommends for the same motor in japan. Its somehow thicker than the oem spec oil here.

For anyone running conventional 5w-30 (and even some synthetic 5w-30's), it's very possible that it would have sheared to a 20 weight anyway.

And what do you think a 20 weight sheers to?

Yes, shuttle is still working but it slated to retire in 2010.

From some website:

NASA's Mercury capsules of the early 1960s had no computers at all. For re-entry, retro-rocket timing and attitude information was radioed to the spacecraft from a tapes-and-teletypes computer centre on the ground.

Well, the Shuttles were originally equipped with five parallel redundant IBM AP-101 general purpose computers. Each of those was equipped with a mighty 1,310,720 bits of ferrite core memory (more had to be tacked on to accommodate the elephantine 700 kilobyte size of the Shuttle's control software...), and was good for a neck-snapping 0.48 MIPS and 0.325 MFLOPS.

They did update it though, a whole 3 times faster! And a little more memory. Thats it, havent touched it since 1991.

So the updated one does about 1.5 MIPS. Using modern calculations

Core 2 Duo E6400 at 2.13GHz- 19,773Mips
Core 2 Duo E6400 at 2.88GHz- 25,963Mips

A radiation-hardened 80C85 (the CMOS version of the Intel 8085) did the thinking for the Sojourner rover on Mars. The Pathfinder lander and the later Spirit and Opportunity rovers, though, got a lot more grunt; they all use the popular RAD6000, which is a hardened version of the 25 MIPS IBM POWER chip that came before the PowerPC.

8085 was the precursor to the 8088 if anyone is curious. They used that thing in the original IBM-PC. Some of us are old enough to have had one.

Your HP calculator has48 series)
And up to 4mhz of processor speed.

Is this a trick question?

Depending on the base oil, the additive pack, and the amount of viscosity index improvers, it will likely stay in grade better than a 5W-30.

Disclaimer: I do not advocate running 20 grade in a Subaru spec'd for a 30 grade. I don't even know why people bother with 5W-30 in FL.

Heh. Maybe. And a lot of space shuttle info...

OP: What's the word? Did the car explode upon re-entry?

Update: Called the dealership Tuesday morning and the service department

said that they would check with the tech and give me a ring immediately, it is

now 8:00pm on wednesday and still no response, I changed the oil today on

my own just to play it safe. I'll count this as a live and learn, and i'll change

my own oil from now on. Thanks for the responses.

Another update, spoke to the service manager today and he assured me by

saying quote "We called Subaru and they assured us that the motor oil used is

fine for the WRX" . So they did use the 5w20 in it after all. Oh well,

like previously stated, just a lesson learned.
