Default Check engine, traction control, and flashing cruise control light on.

I posted this in the 2012 Impreza thread, but it will quickly get buried. Since I appear to be the first 2.0 Impreza with this issue it probably warrants its own thread.

Car went in at 23,852 miles for a check engine, traction control/VCS, and flashing cruise control light. After various tests, the dealer determined it might be the leak check valve assembly (per Subaru techs), so it was replaced at around 23,900 miles. At around 24,100 miles the lights returned.

I'm the first at my dealership with this. Car is completely stock. Not having cruise control is big annoyance with the amount of freeway travel I do. Car drives completely fine otherwise. The traction control is not working with this either. I haven't had any problems (no oil burn-off issues) aside from this.

Car was dropped off this morning and the dealer ran all the tests they could per Subaru. They're waiting to hear back from another tech. It pulled the same code as last time and it's related to emissions. The car is PZEV.

Lemon Law in Oregon is three failed attempts and the defect happened under 24,000 miles (with documentation), so i think I'm good there. I really hope it doesn't go that far as I don't want to deal with a six-month hassle. On the other hand, I was intending to keep this car for several years and this doesn't give me much reassurance it's going to be reliable.

Meh.

It was mentioned before in the same 2012 Impreza thread on 8/28/2013 post #18765 and a few other post. I never saw where it was resolved but this is the first time I'm seeing it being an emissions code.

For Subaru, any time the car has any issue, the check engine, traction control, and flashing cruise control light will be on at the same time. The car auto disables those functions when check engine light is on. From your description, it's the same issue that haven't been fix. They reset the error code after they performed the repair. the check engine light will pop up after X miles if the issue still there. Sometime it takes few try to get it all problem straighten out. I had similar experience with mine, took me 3 trips to the dealership to have everything straighten out. It was a camshaft sensor issue P0019, but turned out they had to reprogram the car and replaced the car's computer part. My dealership was nice enough to offer me a free oil change after all the trouble. But I don't think the Lemon Law apply to your situation. They just simply haven't fix that problem. You can check the paper work they gave you to see the detail of the work they performed on your car. That will give you a better idea of what's wrong and weather it's the same issue or something new.

My friend has a 2013 sport limited and had the same exact problem with his car. They told him it was an oil valve in the engine compartment. They changed the valve and cleared the code. A few weeks later the light comes back on, change another oil valve clear codes again, and told him it shouldn't come back on. So far so good with 15k on the odometer.

Update: Received a call from the service manager today. It's being elevated up the Subaru chain of command. He spoke with their customer relations department as well (not at my request). He mentioned that they wanted to know if I was going to drive around the word "lemon" on it since they assumed I'm unhappy with the situation. Haha

Awaiting more information from Subaru, but my car should be back in the shop next week for attempt #2. Also mentioned a field technician from Subaru may show up.

Dealership is doing all they can at this point, so I'm at least happy with that.

I like the car. I just hope this gets resolved soon.

Found the problem:

Spiders in the evap system. Dealer bug-bombed the car for me as a preventive measure. Hope this doesn't happen again!

Interesting. Where is that part located? How did the spiders get in there? Is this something everyone should check as part of a preventive maintenance procedure?

It's located above the rear differential. According to the dealer, the evap system draws in air on the passenger side near the front door via a tube/ductwork integrated into the unibody.

Other than using spider spray near the point of entry, the Subaru field tech said they can't place a screen or something similar to prevent spiders from entering due to the design.

I don't think the dealer will keep cleaning spiders out for free if this happens again. Hopefully it won't. Not sure why there's an overabundance of these yellow sac spiders this year. We did have an unusually dry summer up until last month though.

I wouldn't consider it preventive maintance under most conditions. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on it though. If you get a CEL related to emissions and the dealer can't quite find out why, this may be it.

So, I figured I'd come here and post my results on similar lights coming on.

I too, had this happen to me after a drive back from Stockton. Light turned on, engine started running like it was a gear lower than it actually was, throttle was reduced to either zero or FLAT OUT WOOOOOOOOOO, and my mileage was shot.

I freaked out, pulled over, and checked as many things as I could without taking apart the engine. (Learned my lesson: I'm keeping my bluetooth OBDII reader in my glove box from here on out.) Couldn't figure out what was wrong, so I limped the last 20 miles home, and got the reader, and the P0019 code.

Called up the dealer, they said to bring it in, as there was a technical service bulletin. Did so, and they reflashed my ECU, fortunately it took the first time and didn't require replacement. Went and had dinner, took a walk, and came back and drove home, with everything fine. Apparantly the problem was a corrupted "page" in the ECU.

Default I have this problem also

My 2013 Subaru Impreza is less than 1 month old, has less than 1000 miles on it, bought it from a dealer which at the time of purchase had 125 miles on it.The check engine light, cruise control and awd light came on.
I bought a blue tooth diagnostic tool and the current fault detected is P0021
Powertrain "A" camshaft position
-timing over-advanced or system performance "Bank2"
Called the dealership and have an appt to fix problem.Hope it works cuz I am a little angry a 2013 vehicle with no miles on it would do this.
Is this common on Subarus?I just traded in a chevy Siverado which never ever had any kinds of problems whatsoever and was 9 years old with only 58k miles on it. What is the lemon law in California?

You're getting ahead of yourself calling it a lemon...

Default Common occurrence?

So I can take it that this kinda b.s. Of a new Subaru is normal? F...that noise...my time is worth more than dealing with a new Subaru that has to go to the dealer often....wish I still had my Chevy Silverado...

You sound like me. I was exactly where you are, except it was my new Tahoe, and would pop into 4wd by itself. Usually when you started it, it would switch into either 4 hi or 4 lo. I forgot what the part was called, but its on the t case and reads what gear it's in. Guess they had issues with that. Had it fixed and no issues since. We havnt had any issues with the Subarus yet. So is imagine you'll see the same after yours is fixed. Good luck.

Edit: part was the 4wd encoder motor.

You'll be alright. I bought mine with 3 miles on it, didn't even drive it. Took of and had a 2.5 hour drive home. I had mixed emotions driving it, but had planned on just using as work car for employees. I ended up, after putting a few hundred miles on it, really liking it and kept it for myself and the business bought another for employees. As it breaks in, you'll like it even more. At least I did. I'm entertained by the little car myself. I wish I would have bought one years ago.
