Subaru Stars Best things to monitor while racing?

I'm looking to build up a gauge package for the car, and because I mostly do road-course racing, am wondering what would be the best 3 gauges to use?

I'm leaning towards exhaust temps, oil pressure, and boost... maybe A\F?

Oil Temp, Water Temp, and Oil Pressure. Hook a sensor to the oil pressure and have it switch light.

At least this is what I'm planning on doing...

We used 6 gauges, but 5 were considered critical. Those 5 were oil temp, oil pressure, water temp, boost pressure and exhaust gas temp. Those 5 told us the health of the engine at all times.

The 6th gauge was fuel pressure. Good to have as a diagnostic tool, but not mandatory from an engine health standpoint.

Thanks guys, so it looks like boost, oil temp, oil pressure, and exhaust temps seem to be popular. Is my stock water temp guage good enough, it seems to work well.
Also, wouldn't water temp and oil temp be related, or does the oil temp vary much more than the water?

What brand of guages do you guys like best? And analog or digital?

The stock water temp is OK at best. And no oil and water temp don't follow each other.

I prefer electric pressure gauges so I don't run pressurized lines into my cabin.

+1 on these. I was going to do this same set-up, but bought a track car instead. I actually tossed around the idea of not using a Oil Pressure, and putting maybe Boost in its place. It was pretty much a lazy factor. I read what all was involved in runnning both Oil guages, and it just seemed like a pain in the butt. Figured the factory idiot light for oil pressure was adequate. Now I need to figure out which ones to run in a N/A car.

Furthering the oil pressure and oil temp questions, what is the general consensus regarding where to tap? Is a sandwitch adapter at the oil filter good enough for both? Tap the oil pan for temp? Oil galley for pressure?

Thanks

George

well, what made me change my mind is. You use the Oil Galley for Temp, and there is a second Oil Galley/OEM pressure switch that you use.

I'm installing gauges soon...what's the feeling about sandwich adapters at the oil filter? Ok, not ok for track use?

You can save some dash real estate by just rigging up warning lights..

you don't NEED to know the exact oil pressure all the time...but if it drops to below a certain threshold just have it light up...same with oil temp and water temp..really you are just watching to make sure they dont overheat...so just need a warning light in your field of view and then the gauge somewhere further out of the way.

Ideally a Aimport dash or something ...warning lights on the side, and then you can toggle to the view of the sensor you want to look into

I agree with the red lights theory, but it helps to know trends and to see if they change throughout time.
Isn't there a decent single pod that does more than one function like oil psi and temp with a warning light in it?

I'm not following your math...there are plenty of perfectly good guages in the $130 range ($390 for 3). Those units you linked to are $1000+

Your $125 gauges are typically very inaccurate. Calibrate an autometer boost gauge with a pro mil spec meter and you will see a few PSI difference at a mere 16 PSI. That kind of crap isn't worth a damn in a decent race car.

Most run a handful of Defi gauges and by the time they buy a clock pod and sending units, they spend close to $800. Then you have only 3 gauges way off to the right hand side of the drivers view with tiny warning lights when things go wrong with the things they are metering.

With a proper dash, you get more reliability, accuracy, readability, and proper warning lights that are within you immediate line of sight. Spend a few more bucks and get 3 times the amount of practicality and value. That's how the math works.

Anyone who is installing the old style pod gauges in their car is in the stone age.
