Default Removing the whole dash from a 2017 WRX.

Does anyone have any experience doing this or can point me in the right direction? Perhaps access to a service manual? I found some YouTube videos but they only go as far as removing the head unit.

I've been having this annoying buzzing sound and pinpointed to right under the dash near the solar sensor area. I took it to the dealer and they said they would need to remove the whole dash, because there is most likely a loose wire under there that is causing the buzzing. He also mentioned this job may create some knicks and scratches but nothing major. This comment, and the way they were manhandling the car trying to figure the source of the buzzing made weary of leaving it with them.

Any guidance is appreciated.

Buy the manual online from Subaru. Otherwise just start taking it apart. I'd much rather have the dealer do it under warranty though, and if there are any issues they will be liable.

Take pictures of the dash before you have them do it to prove there wasn't any damage before they took it apart. If there is damage afterwards, the pics will show it's from them

Thanks for the responses. I'm just really particular and for them to mention there may be some markings, it means there will be markings. Also don't want them to break half the clips and create more rattles. Good idea on the pics if I decide to leave it with them. I'm still going to try and locate a service manual and see how involved it would be.

I can promise you it isn't a quick process. Everything, literally everything has to come apart. (Good 8+ hour process) If that was in my car, it wouldn't be worth the hassle, since you'd end up with even more rattles, and maybe a few scratches. It's not like a mechanic takes a dash apart daily. Plus, You'll have a new rattle in a week. It's a Subaru thing.

I'm with you. The rattles in these cars is absolutely ridiculous. I've had decade old Hondas with 200k miles and a 15 year old 92 Infiniti with 250k miles and none of them had rattles like my brand new WRX. People like to say "It's a Subaru thing" and to accept it like it's a normal thing. I don't get it lol. I paid 26k for a brand new car. I don't want rattles.

Which dealer? I've had better luck with Ramsey in NJ for service versus dealers locally in NYC area quality wise.

I went to the one by me in Queens NY (Koeppel) for the initial conversation. They seem good but ripping out the interior takes time and patience, and I don't see a dealer doing it right as opposed to something like a suspension swap. I bought my car from Ramsey. If they offer me a loaner maybe I should I take it to them since I bought it there.

Agreed. I bought a limited, and after taxes (NYC) and fees my OTD price was 34k. I've had it for 6 months, and this buzzing sound is annoying the hell out of me. This shouldn't be the case for any car. Even the dealer agreed. I had a 2001 BMW 530i for 9 years before this car that I had bought used from a friend in 2007. I had a stiffer suspension on it and it never made a peep, and it was 15 yrs old.

So are you going to have the dealership perform the work under warranty, and risk further damage/rattles. Or are you going to read the "fix these rattles" posts, and relize Subaru has had this issue for decades.

2017 STI, not even 2,000 miles. My doors rattle with the bass from the "upgraded" HK system. My rear trunk tray is the same way. Just this morning my seat belt slider started rattling. (Reminds me of my 2005 wrx personally.)

I hate rattles, hate them. But love my car still. Oh yeah, and mine had an MSRP of 40,000!? Should I be mad and rage?

^^^ No one is raging. Just having a forum discussion and trying to get opinions. I also have the door rattles and rear deck rattle. Those are manageable and easy to get to and fix if someone wanted to. This one under the dash is not.

Hard to believe but if true I'm jealous. I only had a couple rattles last summer. Passenger door card and one other unidentified one. Over the winter several others appeared in the rear deck, triple gauge area. Also remember hearing creaking coming from the windshield over rough surfaces. 2016 Limited with about the same mileage.

Have you considered removing the dash vent-grille into which the solar sensor is mounted? Perhaps by doing so you can inspect it and the wiring going to the sensor as well as for inspecting the opening itself?

I loathe going to the dealership unless it's an absolute last-resort, whether it is for a warranty claim or not.

^^^ Yea we pulled it out when I went to the dealer. I thought/was hoping that was the source but it's seems to be coming about 3 inches away from the driver side edge of where that panel starts. I asked if shoving some foam underneath would help and he said no. Maybe I'll try that anyway.

I apologize if I came off abrupt. I'll give you some background. I upfit standard vehicles into police/fire/EMS/government use. I.e removing the entire interior (and most of the exterior) to install lights,communications,computer systems, etc. And can promise you, I could remove an entire dash to find a rattle. But wouldn't in fear of creating more. I could only imagine the "road testing" a Subaru tech would do to troubleshoot the exact location, and to check for a fix.
I do feel your pain, and was just as concerned when rattles appeared with my first wrx. I slowly tracked down most, and it helped. But I was not surprised at all with the STI speaker rattle since I'll always have some rattle. (Because racecar?)

^^^ No worries. I get what you're saying. It's just that in this particular case trying to remedy it is extremely involving, and may create more issues which is frustrating.

Just an update if anyone is interested. Looks like I got rid of that super annoying rattle without removing the dash like the dealer stated was necessary. I kept trying to source it and ended up removing the guage cluster. There was this metal bracket behind the cluster that was vibrating. I unscrewed it put felt behind the bracket and it was still doing it. I literally loosened the two screws that were holding the bracket a half turn each and that did it. This thing tormented me since I bought the car and it took like 30 minutes to resolve. I'm happy its fixed but we'll see what else pops up.

Don't take the dealer's word for it. They likely have no idea of where it is coming from, and removing the entire dash may not be necessary.

Also, if you remove the entire dash, no matter how careful you are, you are going to end up with more rattles then you started with.

I would say before even considering removing the dash, remove all of the surrounding pieces that are easily removable, and try to find the rattle from there. If you remove the glove box, all of the lower dash trim, the HVAC, Head Unit Gauge Cluster and Center Display you might have enough room to locate and address it from there.

Completely removing the dash is one of the most horrible, frustrating and PITA things you can do on a car, and should be avoided at all costs.
