I believe in the adage, "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow."

Problem with fast cars is that if you drive a fast car fast...you're doing something very dangerous and very illegal...

I've actually been acquiring the parts for a VF23 turbo upgrade, but recently decided I don't need that level of power (my WRX is stage 2.)

Good thread too. I'd reccommend some of these that want 400+whp try a sportbike, do 120mph on that and hit a tiny bump and it can put the fear of God in yah.

I'd be happy with 300whp maybe less. I've read through various threads and it's pretty clear what a stage one setup is and what a stage two setup is (although it can vary, some put on a CAI or do a full TBE instead of just a DP). But what beyond that?

Say you have a TBE, CAI and protune. Not sure what that nets you at the wheels but what is normally the next step (if there is one) if you don't plan on doing a FMIC or upgraded turbo? Or is that pretty much what you need to do for more power?

This would be on 93oct pump gas.

You do get used to the power, my stage one feels quick now instead of **** yeah FAST and its only been 4 months.

I have a feeling that the fact that I will eventually get married will mean that there will be a "restriction" on the $$ I can spend on my car without loads of "marital distress." I figure 300 whp is a reasonable goal before said "restrictions" fall into place .

Eh, it's more about cash flow restrictions than "wifey will be pissed off" restrictions.....though the former usually affects the latter :P.

I'm just trying to be realistic (and considering what I can safely handle).

What's the dyno read-out on your power and torque with those mods?

6MT time, especially if you want to run 300 whp.

If it was a shift fork problem (keep in mind, I've worked on shift forks in Toyotas and Nissans, not Subarus), it would most likely have a problem going into two gears, but not all 6 (counting reverse here). 1-2 have their own shift fork and share a syncro ring, same with 3-4, 5 has it's own fork and ring, and reverse has a fork that moves a small gear inbetween two other gears. If second went blamo, if it bent the main shaft or output shaft, I could see it throwing everything out so it wouldn't shift into any gear, except maybe reverse would still work, but the car probably wouldn't move.

When you find out what happened, try to post pics. I like seeing pics of the insides of our gearboxes, even the glass 5 speeds.

o and the 6mt will cost to much for me.... if im only looking at $700 or $800 im better of just fixing mine i figure rather than spending $3000 to buy a 6MT

I started out with 135 chp. Then I moved to 165 chp. Now I've got 227 chp. Eventually, I'll upgrade my WRX to 300 chp. Then, I'll either stick a 2JZ stroker motor with a GT 60 turbo in it, or I'll just keep gradually upgrading the power in small incriments. This way, I'll never be truely bored with power, and I'll never have more power than I can handle in my car, unless I put the 2JZ in it. Then I'll have a car that just explodes transmissions everywhere.

pshhh 400...I want 450. Ha JK. Great thread. Should be a sticky. After riding in my friends 600 RWHP RX-7 I never want that much street power. I'll take 300 and be perfectly happy.

360whp is perfect

And it seems the more power my car has the slower i actually drive normally.
I know for a fact that i can beat 99% of the cars around me. . . whats the point of endangering people. I knw my cars fast, HP numbers dont make u speed. they just help.

Ill take a 500whp car anyday, i would need new rubber like every 6months but if youre responsible enough to keep the real stuff on the track then why not.

I did the sportbike route. . . went 140, and had plenty of near death experiances here in AZ. Point is, for some people the temptation alone is reason enough to limit your car's power. but for others, mod the heck outa it. burn mustangs and challengers at the track, just dont do stupid stuff in school zones and parking lots lol

Excellent post, good information. Realistically 310-320 in my 2009 wrx doesn't seem to far out of reach and I can't wait....
